WoW Forever The Drowned City Guide: Bosses, Loot, Quests and Location

WoW Forever The Drowned City Guide: Bosses, Loot, Quests and Location

The Drowned City is a new level 35-40 World of Warcraft: Forever dungeon built around ancient troll ruins that have risen from the sea near Stranglethorn Vale. It was playable on the BlizzCon 2026 show floor, giving us an early look at its open layout, water routes and combat style even though the dungeon is not yet available in the current public beta build. Blizzard officially describes naga and pirates around The Drowned City, while BlizzCon hands-on coverage also documented Makrura, undead enemies and troll-related threats inside the instance.

Short answer: The BlizzCon version of The Drowned City rewarded controlled pulls, careful Mana management and deliberate route choices more than rushing from boss to boss. After a more linear opening, the dungeon expanded into a large ruined city where groups could choose different paths and even reach Zin'aka through the water.

Updated: September 24, 2026. Blizzard's current information places The Drowned City in the level 35-40 bracket. The boss names, trash packs, route details and mechanics below come from the playable BlizzCon 2026 build and should not be treated as final until the dungeon appears in a public beta build. The exact entrance, quests, complete ability lists and boss-specific loot tables have not yet been published.

The Drowned City Location and How to Get There

The Drowned City is associated with the coast of Stranglethorn Vale. Current dungeon coverage describes it as an ancient troll ruin off the coast, while Blizzard's official Forever overview specifically mentions naga and pirates around The Drowned City. The exact instance entrance, portal coordinates and access route have not yet been published, and the dungeon is not currently available as a playable zone in the public beta client.

FactionRoute to the AreaWhat to Know
AllianceNo verified dungeon route has been published yet. Stranglethorn Vale can be reached through the normal Eastern Kingdoms travel network, but the final approach to The Drowned City remains unknown.Do not rely on guessed coastal coordinates until Blizzard or the beta client exposes the actual entrance.
HordeNo verified dungeon route has been published yet. Grom'gol Base Camp remains a major Horde travel point in Stranglethorn Vale, but no official route from it to the instance has been confirmed. No faction-specific entrance or Horde-only access requirement has been announced.

The important distinction is that current coverage places The Drowned City around the Stranglethorn coast rather than inside one of the existing inland troll instances. Zul'Gurub, Zul'Kunda, the Vile Reef and existing coastal caves should not be presented as the Forever dungeon entrance unless a future build explicitly connects them to it.

The Drowned City Level Range and Group Setup

Blizzard's current dungeon information places The Drowned City at levels 35-40. Some early BlizzCon coverage used a wider 35-45 range, but the later published dungeon table lists 35-40 and should be used as the current reference.

Dungeon DetailCurrent Information
Level Range35-40
LocationAncient troll ruins associated with the coast of Stranglethorn Vale; exact entrance not yet published
SettingA drowned troll city or ruin that has risen from the sea
Primary Enemies SeenNaga, Makrura, undead enemies and other aquatic or troll-related creatures; Blizzard also officially mentions pirates around The Drowned City
Named BlizzCon EncountersZul'Alai, Zin'aka, Deathless Marrow, Min'loth the Serpent
Recommended Party Structure1 tank, 1 healer, 3 DPS based on the conventional five-player setup used during the show-floor runs
Formal Minimum Item LevelNone published

The bracket places The Drowned City alongside several established mid-level alternatives. Razorfen Kraul reaches level 40, while multiple Scarlet Monastery wings cover much of the 30s. The Drowned City adds a new Stranglethorn-centered option, although its exact entrance requirements and final recommended level progression should wait for the playable beta version.

The BlizzCon version began with a relatively linear path before opening into a much larger section of the ruined city. From there, players could choose where to move next instead of following one mandatory boss corridor. Warcraft Tavern's show-floor run also documented a water route that allowed groups to reach Zin'aka unusually early.

SectionHow to Handle It
Opening RuinsFollow the initial route and clear carefully while learning patrol distances and the spacing between packs.
Open CityOnce the dungeon expands, choose pulls deliberately instead of engaging every nearby group. The show-floor layout allowed meaningful route choices.
Water SectionsDiving provided an alternate route in the BlizzCon build and could lead players directly toward Zin'aka.
Deeper RuinsShow-floor coverage placed Deathless Marrow and Min'loth the Serpent deeper inside the city.

This open structure was one of the dungeon's clearest BlizzCon features. The first-run goal should not be to clear every visible enemy. Watch patrols, decide where the group actually wants to go and create safe ground around the next pull or encounter before committing. The final beta route may still change.

The Drowned City Bosses and Mechanics

Four boss names were documented from the playable BlizzCon build: Zul'Alai, Zin'aka, Deathless Marrow and Min'loth the Serpent. These are the best-supported boss names currently available, but they come from show-floor coverage rather than a finalized Blizzard encounter journal or public beta dungeon. No complete spell list or boss-specific loot table has been published for any of them yet.

BossSkills / Mechanics Seen or ReportedStrategy / Loot Status
Zul'AlaiA very strong enrage was observed when Zul'Alai reached low health. No verified individual spell names have been published yet.Keep tank defensives, healer resources and strong DPS cooldowns available for the final part of the fight. Loot: no boss-specific drop table has been published.
Zin'akaThe boss could be reached through the water in the demo route. Show-floor reports specifically warned of extremely dangerous tank damage, but no verified ability names are available.Enter with tank defensives ready and enough healer Mana to react to heavy incoming damage. Loot: no boss-specific drop table has been published.
Deathless MarrowAnother encounter reported to put severe pressure on the tank. No complete or verified spell sequence has been published.Clear nearby enemies and begin the encounter with healer Mana and defensive cooldowns available. Loot: no boss-specific drop table has been published.
Min'loth the SerpentA deeper boss encounter documented in the BlizzCon build. No reliable combat ability list, phases or named spells have been published yet.Treat any detailed strategy or supposed spell list as unconfirmed until the encounter appears in a public build. Loot: no boss-specific drop table has been published.

Zul'Alai

Zul'Alai was one of the first bosses encountered in the BlizzCon route and currently has the clearest documented mechanic of the four. Warcraft Tavern reported that the boss gains a very strong enrage near death, making the final portion of the fight substantially more dangerous than the opening.

The tank should keep a defensive cooldown available for low health, the healer should avoid entering the final stretch with little Mana remaining and DPS should preserve enough burst to shorten the enrage window. No verified name, tooltip or numerical value for the enrage ability has been published, so it should be described as an observed mechanic rather than a finalized spell.

No confirmed Zul'Alai loot table is available. Forever will contain newly reviewed dungeon rewards and blue-quality unique dungeon boss items in general, but no published source currently identifies which specific items drop from Zul'Alai.

Zin'aka

Zin'aka could be reached unusually early in the BlizzCon version by diving through the water instead of immediately following the deeper land route. This encounter is therefore one of the clearest examples of The Drowned City's non-linear show-floor layout.

Warcraft Tavern specifically warned that tanks could take extremely dangerous damage during Zin'aka. However, no reliable spell names, cast sequence or damage values have been published. The practical preparation is to begin the encounter with major defensive tools ready and enough healer Mana to handle sudden pressure.

No confirmed Zin'aka boss drops have been published. Datamined level-appropriate items should not be assigned to this boss without a verified source, and the final loot table should be added only after the dungeon becomes available for testing or Blizzard publishes its rewards.

Deathless Marrow

Deathless Marrow was encountered deeper in the city and was the other boss specifically highlighted for dangerous tank damage during show-floor runs. As with Zin'aka, the reports support the general tank-pressure warning but do not provide a complete verified ability list.

Clear enough surrounding enemies to give the tank safe positioning, let the healer recover before the pull and avoid spending every emergency defensive on the trash immediately before the encounter. Exact spell names, timings and phases should wait for a public test build.

No Deathless Marrow-specific loot has been confirmed. The boss may eventually have one or more of Forever's newly designed dungeon rewards, but assigning any existing item to it now would be speculation.

Min'loth the Serpent

Min'loth the Serpent is especially notable because the name already exists in long-established Gurubashi lore. Min'loth was a powerful troll witch doctor associated with I'lalai, the city destroyed and submerged after his attempt to bind the Krakken ended in catastrophe.

Finding a boss named Min'loth the Serpent inside a newly risen troll city strongly recalls that old story. However, Blizzard has not yet explicitly stated in the checked Forever material that The Drowned City is I'lalai itself. The connection should therefore be presented as a strong lore link rather than a confirmed identification of the dungeon.

The BlizzCon preview places Min'loth among the deeper encounters, but no reliable ability list, spell names, phases or positioning requirements have been published. There is also no confirmed Min'loth boss loot table. The old Cinnabar Bijou associated with Min'loth in Warcraft archaeology is a lore connection, not evidence that it drops from the Forever boss.

The Drowned City Trash and Pull Management

The dungeon's trash was one of the main sources of danger in the BlizzCon build. Patrols and packs were positioned closely enough that an aggressive pull could quickly become two or more simultaneous groups, while the open layout gave players more freedom to choose which enemies to engage.

Enemy Type SeenPractical Concern
MakruraAquatic enemies documented in the show-floor version, particularly around the ruined and water-heavy areas.
Risen SentryAn undead patrol enemy that reinforces the need to watch movement before committing to a pull.
Brinescale ExplorerA naga-related enemy documented among the mixed aquatic packs in the BlizzCon build.
Deathless SorcererCaster-type trash documented in the deeper sections. Interrupts or crowd control should be prioritized if its casts remain dangerous in the final build.
Deathless GuardianPart of the undead groups documented deeper in the city and another reason to avoid combining multiple packs unnecessarily.

Do not assume the dungeon will reward modern-style mass pulling. The BlizzCon version favored identifying patrol paths, pulling individual groups into already cleared ground and keeping crowd control available for situations where another pack might join.

Mana management also mattered in show-floor runs. Moving into the next boss while the healer was depleted could turn otherwise manageable tank damage into a wipe. Because tuning can change before release, the exact difficulty should not be judged from individual BlizzCon wipes, but the value of controlled pacing was clear in the playable build.

The Drowned City Loot

No boss-specific Drowned City loot table has been published as of September 24, 2026. Blizzard has confirmed a broad Forever itemization overhaul in which every dungeon drop was reviewed, hundreds of new drops were added and unique dungeon boss items were upgraded to blue quality, but those announcements do not identify individual drops from Zul'Alai, Zin'aka, Deathless Marrow or Min'loth the Serpent.

For that reason, there is no reliable class-by-class Drowned City farming table yet. A level-appropriate item found through datamining or another dungeon is not automatically a Drowned City drop, and an old lore item associated with Min'loth is not proof of a new boss drop.

Once the dungeon becomes testable, the useful loot section should list each verified boss drop, armor type, weapon type, relevant stats, classes or roles that benefit from it and any Blueprint or profession-related rewards. Until those sources exist, all four bosses should be marked as having no confirmed boss-specific loot table.

The Drowned City Quests

No complete quest list has been published for The Drowned City yet. Blizzard has discussed dungeon quests and expanded quest rewards as part of Forever, but the starting NPCs, prerequisites, instance objectives and rewards specifically tied to The Drowned City are not currently documented.

Do not confuse existing Stranglethorn troll quests, pirate quests, archaeology references or old Gurubashi lore tablets with Forever dungeon quests. Familiar characters and locations can provide lore context without being part of the new dungeon's actual quest chain.

The eventual quest checklist should show the starting NPC, faction availability, prerequisite chain, dungeon objective and verified rewards. None of those fields should be filled from nearby Classic quests unless the Forever client or Blizzard explicitly connects them to The Drowned City.

The BlizzCon runs used the conventional tank, healer and DPS dungeon structure, and a one-tank, one-healer and three-DPS composition is the practical recommendation for the encounter information currently available. No formal minimum item level, resistance requirement or gear score has been published for The Drowned City.

RoleRecommended PreparationWhy It Matters
TankLevel-appropriate armor and defensive abilities, with major cooldowns available before the harder bosses.Zin'aka and Deathless Marrow were specifically reported to create extremely dangerous tank pressure in the BlizzCon build.
HealerCurrent healing abilities, drinks and enough Mana recovery between major pulls. The show-floor version punished groups that entered heavy-damage encounters without enough healer resources.
DPSLevel-appropriate weapons or spell gear plus interrupts and crowd control where the class provides them.Tightly positioned trash packs and Zul'Alai's low-health enrage reward controlled pulls and focused damage.
Whole GroupFood, drinks, repaired gear and adequate bag space for a dungeon run.The large open layout seen at BlizzCon makes unnecessary deaths and backtracking more inconvenient than in a short linear instance.

Level-appropriate quest and dungeon gear should be the sensible starting point, but there is currently no evidence for a mandatory gear score, resistance set or required class. Final recommendations should be updated after the dungeon becomes available in beta and its tuning can be tested consistently.

The Drowned City and the Story of I'lalai

The Min'loth encounter creates a strong connection to one of Stranglethorn's oldest troll legends. Classic Warcraft lore describes I'lalai as the seat of Min'loth the Serpent, a powerful Gurubashi witch doctor whose attempt to bind the Krakken ended with catastrophic waves destroying and submerging the city.

The old story says that the waters eventually retreated from the wider jungle but continued to surge around I'lalai, leaving the city drowned, while Min'loth was never found. A Forever dungeon built around a risen troll city and containing an encounter named Min'loth the Serpent therefore deliberately echoes that history.

What remains unconfirmed is whether Blizzard intends The Drowned City to be literally identified as I'lalai. Until an official quest, dungeon description or developer statement says so, the safer wording is that the dungeon has a strong I'lalai and Min'loth lore connection rather than treating both city names as definitively identical.

Conclusion

The Drowned City stands out among Forever's revealed leveling dungeons because its BlizzCon version emphasized open space and route choice as much as individual boss mechanics. The playable build moved from a relatively direct opening into a broad ruined city where water routes, patrols and tightly packed enemies made the group's choice of path important.

For now, the reliable preparation is straightforward: plan around the 35-40 level bracket, use level-appropriate gear, protect healer Mana, clear safe ground before difficult encounters and expect strong tank pressure from Zin'aka and Deathless Marrow plus a dangerous low-health enrage from Zul'Alai. Zul'Alai, Zin'aka, Deathless Marrow and Min'loth the Serpent are documented BlizzCon encounters, but their complete spell lists and individual loot tables remain unpublished and should be added only when Blizzard or a playable beta build provides verifiable data.
