Pre-release note: This guide is based on the current Patch 12.1 PTR and official pre-release information. Requirements, rewards and numerical values may change before launch.

WoW Midnight Season 2 introduces its class changes through Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek. The update combines spec tuning, targeted gameplay redesigns, new Season 2 tier sets, PvP crowd-control adjustments and several quality-of-life changes. The most important changes currently affect Frost and Unholy Death Knights, Devourer and Havoc Demon Hunters, Balance Druids, Scalecommander Evokers, Arms and Protection Warriors, Affliction Warlocks, multiple Priest and Paladin specializations, and several class-set bonuses.

Patch 12.1 and Season 2 are still in pre-release testing. The content update is planned to launch first, with Midnight Season 2 beginning one week later. The class changes below reflect the latest official PTR information available for the current testing cycle, not final live performance rankings.

What Changes in Midnight Season 2?

PvP crowd controlMany movement-speed reductions are weaker in PvPPositioning, escape tools and mobility become more important
Cooldown ManagerMore racial, trinket and consumable tracking optionsImportant offensive and defensive tools are easier to monitor
CatalystConverted class-set pieces inherit secondary and tertiary stats, plus certain cantrip effectsCatalyst decisions become more closely tied to the source item

When Do the Season 2 Class Changes Go Live?

The class changes are part of Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek. Season 2 begins one week after the content update, bringing the new raid, Mythic+ rotation, PvP season, additional Prey content and higher-tier Bountiful Delves.

The exact regional launch schedule and final class values should be checked against the final release notes. The current PTR is still receiving tuning passes based on raid testing, so a number shown in an earlier PTR build should not be treated as final.

Major DPS Changes in Patch 12.1

Frost Death Knight

Frost Death Knight is one of the largest numerical losers in the latest Heroic-raid testing pass. The current PTR adjustments reduce all ability damage by 10%, melee damage by 20%, Icy Death Torrent damage by 35%, Remorseless Winter damage by 30% and Obliterate damage by 10%.

These changes target several separate parts of the Frost damage profile rather than a single overperforming button. Frost players should expect less passive and cooldown-driven output, with the value of correct resource spending and target uptime becoming more important. Do not replace a Frost build solely because of one PTR pass; the final result depends on additional tuning and the Season 2 tier bonus.

Unholy Death Knight

Unholy received a large reduction in the July 8 PTR pass, followed by a partial adjustment. The overall damage reduction was changed from 8% to 3% after Blizzard identified a tuning issue. Several individual effects were also reduced, including Lord of the Dead, Magus of the Dead, Lesser Ghouls, Putrefy, Necrotic Coil, Pestilence, Infected Claw and Virulent Plague.

The practical effect is a flatter and less explosive damage profile than the first PTR version suggested. Unholy players should pay particular attention to changes affecting pets, diseases and hero-talent interactions instead of assuming that the initial 8% reduction remains active.

Devourer Demon Hunter

Devourer receives a broad 10% increase to all ability damage in the latest official tuning pass. This is a direct attempt to raise the specialization’s output without requiring a complete rotational redesign.

Devourer players should still wait for Season 2 testing before treating the change as proof of raid or Mythic+ dominance. A global damage increase improves the baseline, but encounter uptime, defensive requirements, target count and tier-set interaction will determine its real value.

Havoc Demon Hunter

Havoc receives a 5% reduction to all ability damage outside PvP combat. The change does not affect PvP combat, so the PvE and PvP versions of the specialization should be evaluated separately.

The reduction is broad rather than focused on one ability. Havoc players should therefore avoid rebuilding around a single spell until final tuning and Season 2 set bonuses are confirmed.

Balance Druid

Balance Druid receives one of the clearest offensive buffs in the latest pass. All damage dealt increases by 3.5%, while Moonfire, Sunfire, Shooting Stars, Wrath, Starfire and Meteorites receive additional increases. Starfire receives the largest listed builder increase, while the Apex Talent Ascendant Eclipses also gains stronger Solar Bolt and Lunar Bolt damage.

The current direction raises the value of Balance’s damage-over-time effects and builders while keeping Starsurge and Starfall as important spenders. The Keeper of the Grove hero talent receives additional Starfall improvements, and the Balance two-piece bonus increases the damage of instant Starfall.

Scalecommander Evoker

Scalecommander’s Wingleader is redesigned. Instead of relying on spreading Bombardment applications across multiple targets, Mass Disintegrate and Mass Eruption reduce the remaining cooldown of Deep Breath and Breath of Eons for each target struck.

The redesign is intended to remove awkward target-spreading requirements, Disintegrate clipping and excessive pooling around Mass Disintegrate or Mass Eruption. To compensate, Command Squadron’s Pyre damage and Maneuverability’s damage-over-time effect are increased.

This is a gameplay change rather than a simple numerical buff. Devastation and Augmentation players using Scalecommander should expect different cooldown planning in multi-target encounters.

Affliction Warlock

Affliction’s Season 2 two-piece bonus is redesigned to reduce excessive Soul Shard generation. The current bonus increases Agony damage by 15% and Corruption damage by 25%.

The change shifts the bonus toward stronger core damage instead of adding more resource generation. Affliction players should not assume that the live Season 1 resource flow or current talent priorities will carry over unchanged.

Arms Warrior

Arms receives a more rotationally focused version of Tactical Edge. Colossus Smash immediately grants one use of Sudden Death. Ravager also causes enemies it damages to take 50% increased damage from the warrior’s bleeds for 12 seconds, up from 25% in the earlier version.

The new Tactical Edge effect gives Colossus Smash a predictable interaction with Execute-focused gameplay. Ravager becomes more relevant for bleed-oriented builds and increases the importance of placing it where its full duration can affect the target.

Protection Warrior

Protection’s free Revenge mechanic is broadened. Successful dodges, parries and auto-attacks can now make the next Revenge cost no Rage, rather than relying only on dodges and parries.

Ravager receives the same increase to its bleed-damage amplification as Arms. The goal is to reduce the gap between dungeon gameplay, where free Revenge effects can become excessive, and raid or solo play, where the mechanic can feel unreliable or weak.

Healing and Tank Changes

Restoration Druid

Restoration Druid’s Mastery: Harmony healing bonus increases by 15%. The two-piece bonus is reduced so that Genesis increases healing over time by 15%, while the four-piece bonus is redesigned.

Nature’s Swiftness, Tranquility and Ironbark now have a 100% chance to grant Genesis, and the resulting effect lasts four seconds longer. The new design gives major cooldowns a more reliable connection to the specialization’s healing-over-time gameplay.

Restoration Shaman

The Restoration Shaman four-piece bonus receives a substantial Condensation value increase. The PTR also fixes an issue where Overflowing Shores did not heal units standing inside Healing Rain when Healing Rain was created by the Season 2 two-piece bonus.

Restoration Shaman players should test the interaction with their normal raid-healing patterns rather than assuming the bonus is useful only for stacked groups.

Blood Death Knight

The Blood Death Knight Season 2 set uses the new Blood Debt mechanic. Death Strike grants stacks of Blood Debt, which increase Strength. At the required stack threshold, the next Marrowrend consumes the effect, grants a temporary Strength increase and interacts with the four-piece bonus.

The four-piece bonus makes the empowered Marrowrend generate additional Bone Shield and deal Shadow damage to the target and nearby enemies. The set therefore links Death Strike timing with Marrowrend usage instead of functioning as a purely passive defensive bonus.

Season 2 Tier Sets and Gameplay Updates

Season 2 class sets are tied to The Venomous Abyss raid and can also be obtained through the normal Season 2 gearing ecosystem. The class-set vendor Kirana is being moved near the Catalyst in Silvermoon and will offer Midnight Season 2 class-set armor in exchange for Slumbering Coil Curios.

Class-set armor converted with the Catalyst now inherits the secondary and tertiary stats of the item used for the conversion, along with certain eligible cantrip effects. This makes the source item more important than in a system where every converted piece receives a fixed stat package.

Before converting an item, compare the original item’s secondary stats and any relevant cantrip effect with your specialization’s current needs. Do not automatically convert the first high-item-level piece that enters your inventory.

PvP Class Changes in Season 2

Patch 12.1 reduces the effectiveness of many movement-speed reductions in PvP. Blizzard’s stated aim is to reduce the uptime of strong automatically applied snares and create more opportunities for positioning, escape and counterplay.

Previous slow strengthGeneral Season 2 direction
70%50%
50%30%
Lower automatic reductionsReduced by a comparable tier where applicable

Examples include reductions to Chains of Ice, Enfeeble, Grip of the Dead, Blinding Sleet, Magus of the Dead’s Frostbolt, Master of the Glaive and Wave of Debilitation. Some activated reductions retain more of their previous strength.

The crowd-control diminishing-return reset timer is also increased from 16 to 20 seconds. The current Season 2 design lowers the number of repeat crowd-control effects a player can suffer before becoming immune from three to two, while the longer reset time changes how quickly those categories become available again.

Because PvP tuning is separate from PvE tuning, a damage nerf or buff listed for a specialization should not automatically be applied to Arena or Battleground performance.

Quality-of-Life Changes That Affect Class Gameplay

  • Racial ability cooldowns and durations can be tracked in the Cooldown Manager.
  • Trinkets, health potions, combat potions and Healthstones can be pinged through the Cooldown Manager.
  • The Loss of Control display can be moved in Edit Mode.
  • Ranged weapons can use a wider range of transmog illusions.
  • Training Grounds adds computer-controlled Arena opponents for practice.
  • Future Season 2 Voidforge services are being placed in Silvermoon City near the central progression area.

These changes do not directly alter class coefficients, but they make it easier to track important cooldowns, communicate consumable availability and practice PvP fundamentals before entering rated content.

How to Prepare Your Character for Midnight Season 2

  1. Do not finalize a reroll from the first PTR build. Official tuning is still being updated after raid testing, and several large changes have already been revised.
  2. Keep multiple gear options. Broad damage changes and new tier bonuses can change the value of haste, critical strike, mastery and versatility.
  3. Test the new rotation before replacing talents. Hero-talent redesigns such as Scalecommander’s Wingleader and Arms Tactical Edge can change cooldown planning more than their listed percentages suggest.
  4. Plan Catalyst conversions around source-item stats. Season 2 class-set pieces inherit relevant stats and some cantrip effects from the converted item.
  5. Update your Cooldown Manager layout. Add racial abilities, trinkets, potions and Healthstones before raid or Mythic+ testing.
  6. Separate PvE and PvP expectations. Several PvP movement reductions and some PvE damage changes do not apply identically across game modes.

What Is Confirmed and What Is Still Unconfirmed?

The existence of Patch 12.1 class tuning, Season 2 tier sets, PvP slow reductions, the Scalecommander redesign, the latest listed spec adjustments and the related interface changes are officially documented for the current PTR cycle.

Final numerical values, the final order of class changes, live talent priorities, raid and Mythic+ rankings, and the strength of each tier set are not yet confirmed. No specialization should be described as the Season 2 best class until final mechanics and sufficient live performance data are available.
