Mining is a gathering profession in World of Warcraft Retail. In Midnight, it lets you collect ore from deposits throughout the new zones, earn rare side materials, unlock profession Knowledge, and sell raw resources to Blacksmiths, Engineers, Jewelcrafters, and other players. It is one of the simplest professions to maintain because you do not need to craft anything yourself: equip a mining tool, find deposits, and gather.
Mining Profession Overview
Midnight Mining revolves around three basic ores:
- Refulgent Copper Ore, gathered from Refulgent Copper deposits and seams.
- Brilliant Silver Ore, gathered from Brilliant Silver deposits and seams.
- Umbral Tin Ore, gathered from Umbral Tin deposits and seams.
You can also find Dazzling Thorium as a rare side gather from Midnight mining nodes. Your Perception stat can improve your chance of finding rare side materials, including valuable Knowledge items.
Mining deposits can also appear as themed or infused nodes. The four Midnight node themes are Lightfused, Voidbound, Wild, and Primal. These nodes provide special materials and interactive effects, and they can be affected by the Overload Infused Deposit ability.
Midnight uses two material qualities rather than the wider quality system used in some earlier Retail profession systems. Refining is also no longer a central Mining specialization path.
Is Mining Worth It in Midnight?
Mining is worth choosing if you want a low-maintenance profession, reliable Auction House materials, or a profession that supports a second character dedicated to gathering. It is particularly useful during the start of an expansion, raid releases, major crafting activity, and periods when Blacksmithing, Engineering, or Jewelcrafting materials are in high demand.
The main advantages are:
- You can level by gathering while questing, exploring, or completing world content.
- You can sell nearly everything you collect without needing recipes or crafting orders.
- Mining materials support several popular crafting professions.
- Specializations improve yield, gathering speed, rare-material discovery, and mounted mining.
- Mining Knowledge comes naturally while gathering deposits.
- You can pair it with Herbalism for a dedicated gathering character.
The main disadvantage is that Mining income depends on competition, server demand, expansion activity, and Auction House prices. Raw ore is convenient to sell, but its value can fall when many players farm the same routes. Mining is also active gameplay: you must travel to deposits instead of earning materials passively.
Choose Mining if you prefer dependable resource gathering over crafting complex gear or consumables. If your primary goal is making crafted weapons, armor, or engineering items, pair Mining with the relevant crafting profession on another character or use Mining to supply your own materials.

How to Learn Mining
Midnight Mining can be learned from a Mining trainer in Silvermoon. The main Horde trainer is Belil in the Bazaar. Another trainer, Saren, can be found in the Court of Blood.
If you already had Mining during The War Within and continue into Midnight, you can also learn the Midnight portion of the profession by gathering a mining node in a Midnight zone.
After learning the profession, open the Professions window and confirm that Midnight Mining is active. The Midnight skill track progresses through gathering rather than through smelting or crafting. You do not need a separate recipe list to begin collecting ore.
Mining specialization trees become available as your Midnight Mining skill increases. The first specialization becomes available at skill 25, the second at skill 50, and the third at skill 75.
How to Level Mining
The fastest and most reliable way to level Midnight Mining is simply to mine every deposit you encounter. There is no substitute for gathering in the open world. Normal deposits, seams, rich deposits, and themed nodes can all contribute to your skill progression as long as they remain within the appropriate skill range.
Use the following approach:
- Learn Midnight Mining in Silvermoon.
- Equip a Mining tool immediately.
- Enable the profession tracking ability on your minimap.
- Gather deposits while completing the Midnight campaign and side quests.
- Mine seams, rich deposits, and themed nodes whenever possible.
- Continue gathering in later zones when regular deposits stop providing skill.
- Spend Knowledge Points as soon as your first specialization becomes available.
Mining while leveling is more efficient than stopping your questing route to farm a low-level area. When you see a deposit near your path, gather it. If you are specifically rushing to the skill cap, use a circular flying route through a zone with a high concentration of visible deposits.
All three basic Midnight ores can appear throughout the Midnight zones. You are not required to remain in one zone to find a particular base ore. However, themed deposits have zone tendencies, so targeted farming may be useful when you want specific motes or Overload materials.
Recommended Leveling Route
Early Midnight Mining
Begin in Eversong Woods while completing the opening Midnight content. This zone is especially useful for finding Lightfused deposits. Mine every normal, rich, seam, and Lightfused node that appears near your route.
Mid-Level Gathering
Move through Zul'Aman as your character progresses. Wild deposits are more closely associated with this zone. Wild nodes summon Rumbling Orelings when mined, and the creatures can be defeated for additional ore. Overloading a Wild node can summon an Avatar of Nalorakk and provide a temporary Mining Perception effect after the encounter is completed.
Advanced Zones
Continue into Harandar for Primal deposits and into Voidstorm for Voidbound deposits. These areas can offer more dangerous routes, but themed nodes can remain useful for skill gains after ordinary versions of the same ore become less effective.
When farming specifically for skill, prioritize any deposit that still advances your profession. When farming for gold, prioritize the node type and material currently selling well on your realm instead of blindly following a fixed route.
Mining Materials and Shopping List
Mining has a small preparation list compared with crafting professions. You should obtain or prepare the following:
- A Mining tool.
- Profession accessories that improve gathering stats.
- Bag space for ore, motes, and Knowledge items.
- A mount suitable for flying between deposits.
- Optional gathering Phials.
- Optional movement-speed consumables for difficult routes.
Your primary materials are Refulgent Copper Ore, Brilliant Silver Ore, Umbral Tin Ore, and Dazzling Thorium. Themed nodes can also provide Mote of Light, Mote of Pure Void, Mote of Wild Magic, and Mote of Primal Energy.
Do not automatically vendor motes or rare side gathers. Some are used in Midnight crafting, while others may be required for profession gear or may sell better than ordinary ore. Check your reagent bank and Auction House before clearing them out.
Mining Specializations and Knowledge Points
Midnight Mining has three main specialization trees:
- Meticulous Mining
- Plentiful Ores
- Over-LODED
Meticulous Mining
Meticulous Mining is the quality-of-life specialization. Its most important milestone is the ability to mine Midnight deposits while mounted after investing 40 Knowledge Points in the main tree.
The tree also improves Mining stats across Midnight deposits, including Finesse, Deftness, Perception, and skill. The Rich Deposits and Seams sub-specializations improve your performance when gathering those node types.
Mounted mining is one of the strongest early improvements available to a gatherer because it reduces dismounting, shortens travel time, and makes it easier to follow a continuous route.
Plentiful Ores
Plentiful Ores improves your general performance across Midnight deposits. Its main tree provides skill and gathering-stat improvements for all Midnight ore types.
Its three sub-specializations are:
- Refulgent Copper
- Umbral Tin
- Brilliant Silver
Each ore-specific path improves gathering that ore type. Completing an ore sub-specialization also increases your chance of finding more Dazzling Thorium from that type of deposit. This makes Plentiful Ores the best general-purpose tree for players who want consistent raw ore yields.
Over-LODED
Over-LODED focuses on infused deposits and the Overload Infused Deposit ability. The tree improves the value and convenience of themed nodes and can provide an additional Overload charge at its major milestone.
Its sub-specializations are:
- Lightfused
- Wild
- Primal
- Voidbound
Choose an Over-LODED path when you enjoy farming themed nodes, want specific motes, or find that Overload materials are selling for more than ordinary ore. It is less universally useful than Meticulous Mining or Plentiful Ores for a new character.
Knowledge Point Sources
Mining Knowledge comes from several sources. The most important early source is first-time discovery: mining new deposit types and themed combinations can award Knowledge when you first interact with them.
Regular Mining Knowledge sources include:
- Igneous Rock Specimen, which grants one Mining Knowledge.
- Septarian Nodule, which grants three Mining Knowledge after the weekly side-gather sequence.
- Eight open-world Mining treasures, each granting three Knowledge Points.
- The weekly Mining trainer quest, which rewards Thalassian Miner's Notes.
- Thalassian Treatise on Mining from Inscription.
- The Darkmoon Faire profession quest, which provides Mining Knowledge when the Faire is available.
- Midnight Knowledge books purchased from profession-related vendors.
The weekly side-gather system generally provides several one-point items followed by a larger three-point item. Keep mining until you have collected the available weekly Knowledge items rather than stopping after the first discovery.
The eight Mining treasures are spread through Eversong Woods, Zul'Aman, Harandar, and Voidstorm. Some may require campaign progress or access to a specific subzone. Collect them early because they are one-time rewards per character and provide a substantial specialization boost.
Mining Knowledge catch-up items can appear if your character is behind the current Knowledge pace. If you return to Mining after missing several weeks, continue gathering after completing the normal weekly activities so that catch-up items have a chance to appear.
Best Specialization Paths by Goal
Best General Gathering Build
- Invest in Meticulous Mining until you unlock mounted mining.
- Move into the main Plentiful Ores tree.
- Fill the ore-specific paths based on market demand.
- Return to Meticulous Mining for Rich Deposits if you frequently farm rich nodes.
- Add Over-LODED later for themed-node farming.
This is the best starting path for most players because mounted mining improves every route and Plentiful Ores improves ordinary gathering across the expansion.
Best Build for Raw Ore
Choose Meticulous Mining first, then invest heavily in Plentiful Ores. Spread points between Refulgent Copper, Brilliant Silver, and Umbral Tin unless one ore is consistently selling for substantially more on your realm.
Best Build for Dazzling Thorium
Maximize one ore-specific Plentiful Ores path to improve your Dazzling Thorium returns from that deposit type. The best choice depends on your route and server prices. Do not assume one ore will remain the most valuable throughout the expansion.
Best Build for Motes and Themed Nodes
Choose Over-LODED and then specialize in the themed node you intend to farm most often. Lightfused is useful for Mote of Light, Wild for Rumbling Oreling rewards and Wild Perception, Primal for Mote of Primal Energy, and Voidbound for Mote of Pure Void and safer portal use.
Mining Stats, Tools, and Gear
Mining uses three primary gathering stats:
- Finesse gives you a chance to gather more material from a deposit.
- Deftness reduces gathering time.
- Perception improves your chance of finding rare side gathers.
For long farming sessions, Finesse is usually the best general stat because it increases the amount of ore you receive. Deftness improves the speed of a route and becomes more valuable when you are gathering for extended periods. Perception is the preferred stat when you are targeting Dazzling Thorium, motes, or rare Knowledge items.
Mining tools and accessories can be crafted by other professions. Basic Mining tools are made by Blacksmiths, while Mining accessories such as bags and headgear are made by Engineers.
Examples of Midnight Mining equipment include:
- Thalassian Pickaxe
- Farstrider Rock Satchel
- Farstrider Hardhat
- Sun-Blessed Pickaxe
- Junker's Big Ol' Bag
- Sin'dorei Gilded Hardhat
- Sunforged Pickaxe
- Heavy-Duty Rock Assister
- Rock Bonkin' Hardhat
Higher-end equipment may require a Personal or Guild Crafting Order because it uses Bind on Pickup materials. Buy inexpensive starter equipment from the Auction House or commission better gear when you are ready to optimize your gathering setup.
Mining tools can also be made with profession missives for Finesse, Deftness, or Perception. Choose the stat that matches your specialization and farming objective rather than copying a single setup for every activity.
Important Mining Nodes and Resources
Lightfused Deposits
Lightfused deposits provide Mote of Light. When mined, falling motes can appear nearby. Move into the glowing circles to collect them, but watch your health because the motes can cause damage. Overloading a Lightfused deposit creates additional lightfalls.
Voidbound Deposits
Voidbound deposits provide Mote of Pure Void and create a large area that slows movement. Leave the affected area quickly after gathering. Overloading a Voidbound node opens a Reality Tear that can teleport you to another location. The Voidbound specialization improves the usefulness and safety of this interaction.
Wild Deposits
Wild deposits appear mainly in Zul'Aman. Mining one summons two Rumbling Orelings. Defeat them and mine their corpses for additional ore. Overloading the node summons an Avatar of Nalorakk and can grant a temporary Wild Perception buff after the encounter.
Primal Deposits
Primal deposits are associated with Harandar and provide Mote of Primal Energy. They can root or slow you during the gathering interaction. Overloading them involves a health-related channel, so avoid moving until the interaction is complete unless the situation becomes unsafe.
Rich Deposits and Seams
Rich deposits provide a larger yield than normal deposits but do not have the special effects of infused nodes. Seams are less common and are useful for both skill progression and extra materials. The Rich Deposits specialization is generally more useful than Seams for routine farming because rich nodes are easier to incorporate into regular routes.
Making Gold with Mining
The simplest Mining gold-making method is to farm current Midnight ore and sell it directly on the Auction House. This is especially effective when crafters are preparing raid gear, replacing equipment, leveling Blacksmithing, or producing Engineering and Jewelcrafting items.
Use these practices to improve your results:
- Compare the prices of all three base ores before choosing a route.
- Sell Dazzling Thorium separately instead of mixing it into cheap material listings.
- Keep motes and rare side gathers until you know their current demand.
- Farm during peak crafting periods rather than only when prices are lowest.
- Post smaller stacks when buyers are purchasing materials for individual crafts.
- Use a market-tracking website or Auction House addon to monitor price changes.
- Test a route for material yield before judging its gold per hour.
Do not sell everything immediately after a large farming session if the market is temporarily flooded. Store materials in your reagent bank or Warband bank and list them when demand improves. On the other hand, avoid hoarding huge quantities of a material that is rapidly falling in price.
Perception-focused gear can be profitable when rare side materials are valuable. Finesse is usually stronger for ordinary ore volume, while Deftness is useful when you want to complete more nodes per hour. The best stat combination depends on which materials make up most of your income.
Best Profession Pairings
Mining and Blacksmithing
Blacksmithing is the traditional pairing for Mining. Your ore supplies can support weapon and armor crafting, although keeping both professions on one character may require substantial Knowledge and material investment.
Mining and Engineering
Engineering uses Mining materials for mechanical equipment, utility items, and profession accessories. This pairing is useful if you want to craft your own Mining gear and engineering products.
Mining and Jewelcrafting
Jewelcrafting benefits from ore-related materials and may have strong demand for ore used in gem-related crafting. This pairing can be convenient for players who want to process their own Mining materials, but compare the value of selling raw ore with the value of using it in Jewelcrafting.
Mining and Herbalism
Mining and Herbalism are the best pairing for a dedicated gathering character. Both professions can be leveled while questing and both benefit from mounted movement, route planning, Finesse, Deftness, and Perception.
Common Mining Mistakes
- Delaying mounted mining for too long: Meticulous Mining provides one of the biggest practical improvements in the profession.
- Spending all Knowledge on a rare node too early: Over-LODED is attractive, but general ore skill is usually more useful at the beginning.
- Ignoring themed nodes: They provide motes, special effects, and additional skill opportunities.
- Fighting unnecessary mobs: Choose routes that let you gather safely and avoid losing time to repeated combat.
- Using the wrong profession stat: Finesse, Deftness, and Perception support different goals.
- Vendor-selling rare side gathers: Knowledge items and motes should be stored or checked before being destroyed.
- Following an old expansion route: Midnight ore, node behavior, specialization costs, and trainer requirements are expansion-specific.
- Ignoring the weekly quest: The Mining trainer quest is a consistent source of Knowledge.
- Missing Mining treasures: The eight one-time treasures provide a large early Knowledge boost.
- Posting all materials in one massive stack: Smaller listings may sell more consistently to crafters.
Practical Mining Tips
- Keep Mining tracking active whenever you are outdoors.
- Mine deposits during campaign travel instead of returning later.
- Use mounted mining as soon as possible for smoother routes.
- Carry enough bag space before entering a long farming circuit.
- Use Finesse for bulk ore farming and Perception for rare-material hunting.
- Use Deftness when you care more about route speed than maximum yield per node.
- Collect your weekly Mining Knowledge items before changing specialization plans.
- Visit the Darkmoon Faire when it is available for its profession Knowledge reward.
- Complete the Mining trainer quest every week once it unlocks.
- Use the Abundance and Amani Knowledge books when you have the required currencies or reputation.
- Overload Lightfused nodes in open areas where falling motes are easy to collect.
- Leave Voidbound slow fields immediately after gathering.
- Defeat Rumbling Orelings from Wild deposits before moving on if the extra ore is worth the time.
- Do not commit to an ore-specific specialization until you have checked your realm’s demand.
- Store valuable materials in your Warband bank when the Auction House is oversupplied.
