Tailoring is a primary crafting profession in World of Warcraft Retail: Midnight. It is not a gathering profession, Cooking, or Fishing. Tailors create cloth armor, bags, profession equipment, cosmetic cloaks, housing décor, spellthreads, embellishments, bolts, and other cloth-based reagents. The profession is especially useful for cloth-wearing characters, players who complete Crafting Orders, and farmers who want to collect extra cloth from enemies while playing normally.

Tailoring Profession Overview

Midnight Tailoring uses a skill range of 1–100. You increase your skill by crafting recipes that award profession skill points. The profession follows the modern Retail crafting system, including recipe qualities, First Craft bonuses, Knowledge Points, specializations, profession stats, Concentration, Crafting Orders, and recrafting.

Tailoring is one of the more flexible crafting professions because it supports several different playstyles:

  • Armor crafting: Make cloth gear for Priests, Mages, Warlocks, and other characters using cloth armor.
  • Reagent production: Craft Arcanoweave Bolt, Sunfire Silk Bolt, and other materials used by Tailoring recipes.
  • Consumables: Create spellthreads and other useful combat enhancements.
  • Bags: Produce inventory bags, including the Sunfire Silk Backpack.
  • Profession equipment: Craft equipment for Tailors and several other professions.
  • Cosmetics: Make cosmetic cloaks and other appearance-focused items.
  • Housing décor: Create beds, cushions, carpets, curtains, banners, and other cloth-themed furnishings.
  • Cloth farming: Specialize into bonuses that increase cloth obtained from enemies in Midnight zones.

Tailoring does not require a gathering tool. Cloth is obtained primarily by killing humanoid enemies and other eligible creatures, while many higher-end recipes also require reagents made by other professions. This makes Tailoring convenient for characters who spend a lot of time questing, farming, running world content, or completing combat activities.

Is Tailoring Worth It in Midnight?

Tailoring is worth choosing if you want a profession with several independent ways to make gold. It does not depend entirely on one popular recipe. You can switch between cloth farming, bags, spellthreads, bolts, optional reagents, armor, profession equipment, and Crafting Orders as the market changes.

The profession is particularly attractive for characters that regularly kill large groups of enemies. Tailors can invest in Fabric Specialist talents that improve cloth gathering, allowing cloth to accumulate during daily activities instead of requiring a dedicated farming session.

Tailoring is also one of the best professions for an alt army. Nimble Needlework improves the production of Arcanoweave Bolt and Sunfire Silk Bolt, which are tied to limited crafting availability. Multiple Tailoring characters can therefore provide additional daily production.

The main disadvantage is that reaching skill 100 becomes substantially more expensive after skill 60. Trainer recipes carry most of the early leveling process, but the final portion usually requires expensive bags, profession equipment, specialized recipes, spellthreads, bolts, or player Crafting Orders. Do not buy every expensive recipe immediately unless you already know which market you want to serve.

How to Learn Tailoring

Visit a profession trainer and learn Midnight Tailoring. Trainers are available in Silvermoon and other Midnight locations. The listed Midnight trainers include:

  • Galana: Silvermoon.
  • Sempstress Ambershine: Silvermoon.
  • Kalika: a trainer located outside the central Silvermoon profession area.

If your character has never learned Tailoring, you may need to learn the basic profession before learning the Midnight version. Open the Professions interface after training and confirm that the Midnight Tailoring recipe filter is active.

It is normally best to learn Tailoring early in the expansion rather than waiting until you have gathered a large stockpile of cloth. First Craft bonuses reward you for making recipes for the first time, and those bonuses can provide Knowledge Points and Artisan Tailor’s Moxie. Crafting each newly learned recipe once is often more valuable than immediately mass-producing the same low-cost item.

How to Level Tailoring

Midnight Tailoring is divided into two practical stages:

  • Skill 1–60: Use trainer recipes and inexpensive cloth materials.
  • Skill 60–100: Use specialized recipes, profession equipment, expensive bags, consumables, cooldown bolts, or Crafting Orders.

All trainer recipes should be available by skill 50, and they generally continue to provide reliable skill points until approximately skill 60. After that point, many recipes become yellow or green, and skill gains become less predictable. You may need more materials than the basic shopping list suggests.

Material quality does not matter for the recommended early leveling route. Use the cheapest quality available for recipes that are being crafted purely to gain skill. Save higher-quality materials for profitable endgame crafts or recipes where quality affects the result you intend to sell.

Recommended Leveling Route: Skill 1–60

The following route uses the standard Midnight trainer recipes:

This route is subject to normal crafting variance. Yellow and green recipes can fail to award skill points, so keep a small reserve of materials. Craft every new recipe that provides a First Craft bonus when practical, even if doing so changes the exact quantities shown above.

Skill 60–100

There is no single universally cheapest route from skill 60 to 100. The best choice depends on your specialization, available recipes, reagent prices, and whether you can obtain Crafting Orders.

  • Arcanoweave Lining and Sunfire Silk Lining: These are straightforward options and can provide skill points well into the later levels. Their recipe availability and material costs make them most suitable for Tailors who intend to sell the finished items.
  • Profession equipment: Rare profession equipment can be mass-crafted without the same type of time-gated materials associated with some older expansion systems. This can be a simple, though potentially expensive, route.
  • Cloth armor: Armor-specialized Tailors can level by completing player orders. This is slower if orders are scarce, but it can reduce the amount of material you personally need to purchase.
  • Spellthreads and other consumables: These are useful when demand is strong and you can sell the finished products or use them for First Craft bonuses.
  • Cooldown bolts: Arcanoweave Bolt and Sunfire Silk Bolt can help with leveling and gold-making, but their limited production makes them unsuitable as the only leveling method.
  • Bags: Bags can award skill points after skill 60, but their material costs should be compared with their expected sale value before mass production.

Use the Auction House to compare the cost of materials with the selling price of each finished item. The fastest route is rarely the cheapest route. If your goal is gold-making, leveling through crafts that you already plan to sell is usually more efficient than producing disposable items.

These quantities are a practical guideline rather than an absolute requirement. Recipe color, First Craft choices, and skill-up luck can change the total. If you craft additional recipes for First Craft bonuses, purchase extra materials beyond the list.

For the later levels, do not buy a large quantity of expensive materials until you have selected a specialization. Tailoring materials are used differently by armor crafters, bolt producers, and cloth farmers. Your specialization determines which recipes you can learn efficiently and which materials are likely to become your largest expense.

Tailoring Specializations and Knowledge Points

Midnight Tailoring has four specializations:

  • Sin’dorei Finery: Cloth armor and armor-related Crafting Orders.
  • Nimble Needlework: Arcanoweave Bolt, Sunfire Silk Bolt, and high-end bolt production.
  • Fabric Specialist: Cloth gathering, general skill, and profession-stat improvements.
  • Fiber Arts: Core Tailoring skill and secondary crafting stats.

You can begin unlocking profession specializations after reaching Tailoring skill 25. Knowledge Points are spent in the specialization trees to unlock recipes, skill bonuses, secondary stats, resource improvements, and other effects. Eventually, a character can complete every Tailoring specialization, but the process takes time, so your first investment should match your intended market.

Knowledge Point Sources

The most important Knowledge Point sources are First Craft bonuses and Profession Knowledge treasures. First Craft rewards are shown in the crafting journal when available. Crafting every new recipe once is therefore an important habit, even if the recipe is not part of your main production plan.

Profession Knowledge treasures are placed around the Midnight world. Collect them as you quest and explore instead of postponing them indefinitely. The value of early Knowledge Points is high because they can unlock new recipes, improve crafting quality, or increase cloth income before the market becomes crowded.

Some recipes can also be learned with Artisan Tailor’s Moxie from reputation vendors and vendors near the Silvermoon profession area. These recipes provide additional First Craft opportunities and may offer an efficient way to gain skill beyond the trainer recipe stage.

Best Specialization Paths by Goal

Best Path for Cloth Armor and Crafting Orders

Begin with Fiber Arts for general skill and secondary-stat bonuses, then invest in Sin’dorei Finery. Sin’dorei Finery is divided by armor categories and gear slots, so concentrate on one branch rather than spreading points across every item type.

Tailors are the sole providers of crafted cloth armor in Midnight. This creates a dependable Crafting Order market, especially for high-quality pieces and gear with or without Embellishments. A specialist who can consistently meet high-quality requirements will generally earn more than a Tailor who knows many recipes but cannot craft any of them reliably.

Best Path for Bolt Cooldowns and Alts

Choose Nimble Needlework early. This tree improves crafting with Arcanoweave and Sunfire Silk and supports the limited production of their associated bolts.

This route is well suited to players with multiple characters. Each Tailor can contribute additional bolt production, and the finished materials are used in many high-end Tailoring crafts. Combine Nimble Needlework with selected Fiber Arts nodes to improve skill, Ingenuity, Multicraft, and Resourcefulness for the recipes you produce most often.

Best Path for Cloth Farming

Choose Fabric Specialist. The tree improves cloth gathering in Midnight zones and provides general Tailoring skill and profession-stat bonuses.

Fabric Specialist includes regional branches for Eastern Kingdoms Cloth and Otherworldly Cloth. Choose the regional branch that matches where you farm most often. Eastern Kingdoms Cloth supports farming in Eversong Woods and Zul’Aman, while Otherworldly Cloth supports farming in Harandar and Voidstorm.

This is the best route for players who do not want to spend heavily on crafting materials. You can farm cloth while completing world quests, leveling alts, or joining group farms, then sell the raw materials or use them in your own recipes.

Best General-Purpose Path

Start with a mixture of Fiber Arts and Fabric Specialist. These trees affect more of your profession activity than a narrow recipe branch. After establishing a strong general foundation, move into Sin’dorei Finery for armor or Nimble Needlework for bolts and reagent production.

Fiber Arts improves core Tailoring performance through Crafting Skill, Ingenuity, Resourcefulness, Crafting Speed, and Multicraft. The exact value of each stat depends on the recipe, but the tree is useful for nearly every Tailor.

Profession Stats, Tools, and Gear

Tailoring uses four important crafting stats:

  • Crafting Skill: Determines the quality level you can reach on a recipe.
  • Ingenuity: Gives a chance to use fewer resources or save Concentration in applicable situations.
  • Resourcefulness: Gives a chance to use fewer reagents when crafting.
  • Multicraft: Gives a chance to produce additional items on recipes where Multicraft is supported.

Crafting Speed can also be useful when mass-producing inexpensive items, although it does not directly improve the quality of a finished craft. Concentration is especially important for crafters who use lower-quality materials while still attempting to reach a high-quality result.

Tailors use a profession tool and accessories that are crafted by other professions. Available Midnight equipment includes:

  • Farstrider Fabric Cutters: Crafted by Engineering.
  • Sin’dorei Snippers: Crafted by Engineering.
  • Self-Sharpening Sin’dorei Snippers: Crafted by Engineering.
  • Thalassian Needle Set: Crafted by Blacksmithing.

Buy inexpensive equipment from the Auction House when you are leveling or gathering casually. For high-end crafting, commission better equipment through Crafting Orders. Prioritize skill for quality-sensitive armor and consumables, Resourcefulness for expensive reagent crafts, and Multicraft for recipes that can produce additional items.

Important Tailoring Recipes and Crafts

Cloth Armor

Cloth armor is the central Crafting Order market for Tailoring. Midnight includes both Non-Embellished and Embellished gear. Non-Embellished pieces provide a base item that can be customized, while Embellished pieces include their intended effect as part of the recipe.

Examples include Arcanoweave Bracers and Martyr’s Leggings. Focus on one armor slot at first so that your Knowledge Points and profession stats improve the same recipes instead of being spread thinly.

Bolts and Cloth Reagents

Arcanoweave Bolt and Sunfire Silk Bolt are high-end cloth products tied to limited crafting availability. They are important components in other Tailoring recipes and can be valuable when demand for armor, bags, and consumables is high.

Spellthreads

Spellthreads provide leg enhancements for casters and healers. Bright Linen Spellthread is useful during leveling, while Sunfire Silk Spellthread is an important endgame consumable. Spellthreads are often more attractive than armor for Auction House sales because they are consumable and can generate repeat demand.

Bags

Tailors are the primary source of player inventory bags. Sunfire Silk Backpack is one of the notable Midnight bag crafts. Bags can sell steadily throughout an expansion, although margins depend heavily on material prices and how many other Tailors are producing them.

Profession Gear and Housing Décor

Tailoring can create profession equipment for several professions, including equipment for other Tailors. It also produces housing décor such as Chic Silvermoon Pillow, Lush Telogrus Carpet, Luxurious Silvermoon Lounge Cushion, Plush Silvermoon Bed, Silvermoon Curtains, and Voidstrider Saddlebag.

Housing items can be attractive markets because buyers are often purchasing for appearance rather than combat performance. Cosmetic cloaks, including Silvermoon Agent’s Drape, provide another appearance-focused category, although the new cosmetic cloaks are Warbound and cannot be traded or sold through the Auction House.

Making Gold with Tailoring

Tailoring gold-making works best when you maintain several small income streams instead of relying on one recipe.

  • Complete public and personal Crafting Orders: Specialize in one or two cloth armor slots and advertise the quality you can reliably produce.
  • Sell spellthreads: Monitor consumable demand around raid releases, progression periods, and major character gearing events.
  • Produce bolts: Use Nimble Needlework to maximize the value of limited bolt production.
  • Sell bags: Compare the cost of cloth and bolts with the current bag price before crafting in bulk.
  • Craft profession equipment: High-quality profession gear can be ordered by players who want to maximize their own crafting stats.
  • Farm cloth directly: Fabric Specialist allows you to gather more cloth while killing enemies in Midnight zones.
  • Sell housing décor: Watch for popular furniture items after housing updates, new neighborhoods, or decoration trends.
  • Use Concentration carefully: Concentration can turn lower-quality materials into high-quality crafts, but it limits how many profitable crafts you can make over time.

For Auction House sales, calculate the full material cost, including bolts and reagents made by other professions. A craft that appears profitable when comparing only raw cloth with the finished item may lose money after secondary materials, crafting fees, and unsold inventory are included.

Crafting Orders are often better for expensive gear than blind Auction House production. Customers may provide some or all of the reagents, reducing your risk. The highest-value orders generally favor Tailors who have invested deeply into a particular armor branch and can reliably produce the requested quality.

Best Profession Pairings

Tailoring and Enchanting

Tailoring pairs naturally with Enchanting because cloth gear can be disenchanted when it is not worth selling. This gives you a way to turn surplus crafted gear into enchanting materials rather than placing low-demand items on the Auction House.

Tailoring and Engineering

Engineering produces several Tailoring tools and accessories, including the Farstrider Fabric Cutters and Sin’dorei Snippers. This pairing is convenient for a character who wants to supply or craft their own profession equipment.

Tailoring and Blacksmithing

Blacksmithing produces the Thalassian Needle Set, one of the listed Tailoring accessories. This is useful for players who want direct access to the profession’s tool equipment without relying on another crafter.

Tailoring and Mining or Herbalism

Mining and Herbalism provide a steady source of general materials that can be sold to finance Tailoring. They do not directly gather cloth, but the pairing works well for players who want one profession for raw-material income and one for crafting.

Tailoring and a Combat-Focused Character

Tailoring is particularly convenient on characters that kill many enemies. Because cloth gathering requires the Tailoring profession, a combat character can collect valuable cloth while questing, farming, or completing world content.   • Specialize in one armor slot if your main goal is Crafting Orders.
  • Choose Nimble Needlework if you plan to run several Tailoring alts for bolt production.
  • Use Fabric Specialist if you want passive income from cloth gathered during normal gameplay.
  • Use Concentration for crafts with a strong quality premium, not for every item that can be upgraded.
