CS2 Premier Season 5 Explained: Maps, Changes, Rating & End Date

CS2 Premier Season 5 Explained: Maps, Changes, Rating & End Date

CS2 Premier Season 5 is the current Premier season and began on July 8, 2026. Its headline change was the return of Cache to the Active Duty map pool, replacing Overpass.

Season 5 later received another major Premier-specific update on September 22: Valve replaced the old ban-down-to-one map veto with a new pick-and-random-selection system.

Current Season 5 summary: Cache is in, Overpass is out, the Active Duty pool contains seven maps, Premier now uses the new four-map selection process, and Valve has not announced an official Season 5 end date as of October 28, 2026.

When Did CS2 Premier Season 5 Start?

Premier Season Five began on July 8, 2026.

Valve launched the season with one major Active Duty rotation:

  • Cache added;
  • Overpass removed.

The change made Cache an official Premier map after its return to CS2 earlier in 2026.

What Is the Current CS2 Premier Season?

As of October 28, 2026, the current season is Premier Season 5.

Valve has not announced Season 6 or an official Season 5 ending date yet.

This matters because search results frequently contain speculative Season 6 dates derived from previous season lengths. Those estimates are not official until Valve publishes an announcement.

Cache Replaced Overpass

Cache is the defining map change of Premier Season 5.

Valve officially added it to Active Duty on July 8 and removed Overpass at the same time.

For Premier players, this means Cache is no longer an optional side map. It is part of the same competitive pool as Mirage, Nuke, Inferno and the other Active Duty maps.

Is Overpass Still in Premier?

No.

Overpass left the Premier Active Duty pool when Season 5 began.

Do not confuse Premier with Competitive. A map can remain playable elsewhere in CS2 while not being part of Premier Active Duty.

Is Cache in Premier?

Yes.

Cache is an official Season 5 Active Duty map.

Valve also shipped multiple Cache fixes after the season began, including clipping, spawn and wallbang adjustments.

How Does Premier Map Selection Work Now?

This changed during Season 5.

Since September 22, 2026:

  1. Team 1 picks one map.
  2. Team 2 picks two maps.
  3. Team 1 picks one final map.
  4. One of those four maps is selected randomly.

This replaced the older process where teams progressively banned maps until one remained.

Important for old guides: any current Season 5 article telling players that Premier still bans seven maps down to one final map is outdated after the September 22 update.

Why Did Valve Change Premier Map Selection?

Valve said the goal was to give players more opportunities to play maps they had been learning.

The practical consequence is significant: both teams now actively put maps into the possible pool instead of only eliminating maps.

You therefore have more influence over which maps can appear, but the final choice is random among four selected maps.

Do You Need to Learn All Seven Maps?

You should be comfortable on the full pool, but the new selection system makes having several strong maps especially valuable.

A practical approach is:

  • 2–3 strong maps;
  • 2–3 playable backup maps;
  • no map where you are completely lost.

Because four maps can remain in the final draw, being a one-map player is particularly risky.

Which Maps Should You Learn First?

There is no universal best order, but for climbing you should prioritize maps where your team can consistently execute basic T-side plans and defend common CT rotations.

For a player starting Season 5 from scratch, a reasonable progression is:

  1. Mirage;
  2. Dust II;
  3. Inferno;
  4. Cache;
  5. Nuke;
  6. Ancient;
  7. Anubis.

This is a learning-order recommendation, not an official difficulty ranking.

Did Season 5 Change CS Rating Colors?

No new Premier color ladder was announced for Season 5.

The standard rating bands remain:

CS RatingColor
Below 5,000Gray
5,000–9,999Light Blue
10,000–14,999Blue
15,000–19,999Purple
20,000–24,999Pink
25,000–29,999Red
30,000+Gold

See CS2 Premier Ranks Explained for the full rating system.

Is 30K the Maximum Rating in Season 5?

No.

30K is the beginning of the Gold color band, not a hard rating cap.

Players can continue above 30,000, and Season 5 public tracking has already shown ratings well above that level.

Did Season 5 Reset Everyone's Rating?

Valve's July 8 Season 5 launch notes did not publish a full new universal recalibration formula.

That is an important distinction.

Older Premier seasons have used recalibration mechanics, but you should not automatically apply the exact Season 2 rules to Season 5 unless the current client requires them.

For the difference between first calibration, seasonal recalibration and inactivity recovery, see CS2 Premier Calibration Explained.

How Does Rating Gain and Loss Work in Season 5?

Premier still shows the potential CS Rating gain and loss associated with your current match.

The exact underlying formula is not publicly documented by Valve.

This means you may see situations such as:

  • +100 / -100;
  • +300 / -100;
  • +100 / -300;
  • other asymmetric combinations.

See CS2 Premier Rating Gain & Loss Explained.

Do Promotion Matches Still Exist?

Yes, at the major 5,000-point color boundaries.

Important thresholds include:

  • 5K;
  • 10K;
  • 15K;
  • 20K;
  • 25K;
  • 30K.

See CS2 Premier Promotion & Relegation Matches.

Does Season 5 Have a Premier Medal?

Yes.

Valve's July 9 update specifically referenced season-medal bars.

The latest fully documented Valve medal system uses:

  • 25 Premier wins for eligibility;
  • an active CS Rating at season end;
  • your highest seasonal rating for the medal color;
  • one bar per 25 wins;
  • maximum five bars.

Valve has not re-published the complete eligibility wording specifically for Season 5, so the distinction matters.

See our dedicated CS2 Premier Season 5 Medal Guide.

When Does CS2 Premier Season 5 End?

Valve has not announced an official Season 5 end date as of October 28, 2026.

You may see predictions for early 2027 based on previous Premier seasons.

Those are estimates, not official dates.

Do not plan medal eligibility, rating activity or a final climb around an estimated deadline as if Valve had confirmed it.

When Will Season 6 Start?

Valve has not announced an official Season 6 start date either.

Season transitions have historically included Active Duty changes, but Valve does not publish a guaranteed fixed six-month Premier calendar.

Any Season 6 date before a Valve announcement is a forecast.

How Long Has Season 5 Been Running?

Season 5 started July 8, 2026.

By October 28, it has been active for more than three months.

That is enough time for the top of the rating distribution and leaderboard thresholds to become significantly more competitive than during the first days of the season.

What Is a Good Rating in Season 5?

Recent large tracking datasets put the broad middle of the active population around the 10K range.

As a practical interpretation:

RatingSeason 5 Interpretation
10KAround the broad middle
15KClearly above average
20KHigh-level range
25KElite tracked range
30K+Exceptionally rare

See What Is a Good CS2 Premier Rating? for current distribution estimates.

What Is the Highest Rating in Season 5?

There is no fixed Valve maximum.

Public third-party trackers have recorded players in the mid-30K range during Season 5.

That number can continue changing as the season progresses.

How Does the Season 5 Leaderboard Work?

Valve maintains a World leaderboard plus seven regional boards.

The World board contains the Top 1,000 players globally.

The exact CS Rating required for Top 1000 changes continuously.

See CS2 Premier Leaderboard Explained.

Is Season 5 Better for One-Map Specialists?

Not really.

The September map-selection update gives players more influence over which maps enter the final pool, but the actual map is randomly selected from four choices.

You can prioritize your best maps, but you still need enough depth to survive unfavorable outcomes.

What Should You Practice for Season 5?

A productive preparation order is:

  • Cache callouts and basic executes;
  • current utility on all seven Active Duty maps;
  • CT rotations;
  • anti-eco protocols;
  • retake positions;
  • basic T-side defaults;
  • communication for the new map-pick stage.

Why Cache Matters So Much This Season

Cache is the only new Active Duty map introduced with Season 5.

Players who spent Season 4 focusing on the previous seven-map pool suddenly needed another map's:

  • callouts;
  • smokes;
  • molotovs;
  • rotations;
  • default timings;
  • common boost and wallbang positions.

That creates a temporary knowledge advantage for players who learn the map quickly.

Does Overpass Knowledge Still Matter?

Yes for CS2 generally, but not for the current Premier Active Duty pool.

If your immediate objective is Premier rating, practice time should prioritize the seven current Active Duty maps.

Did Season 5 Change the C4?

Yes, the Season 5 launch update also redesigned the effective range and extent of C4 explosion damage on official defusal maps.

Explosion damage is now based on precomputed simulation values, and the shockwave expands outward instead of applying everywhere instantly.

This is a gameplay-wide change rather than a Premier rating rule, but it launched with Season 5 and can affect post-plant positioning.

What Else Changed on July 8?

The update also included:

  • new Armory weapon collections;
  • new sticker collections;
  • rotation of older Armory collections;
  • community-map changes;
  • multiple map fixes;
  • scoreboard performance improvements;
  • Source 2 engine updates.

For Premier players, however, Cache replacing Overpass was the main competitive change.

What Changed on September 22?

The biggest mid-season Premier update was the new map-selection process.

The same patch also introduced:

  • silent but slower reloads;
  • silent sniper unscoping;
  • updated crosshair systems;
  • various map fixes;
  • the new Rush 3v3 mode.

But the map-selection change is the part that directly alters every Premier queue.

Season 5 vs FACEIT Season 9

Do not mix the two seasonal systems.

FACEIT Season 9 began separately in August 2026 and uses FACEIT Elo and Level 1–10.

Premier Season 5 uses Valve's CS Rating.

Progress in one system does not directly modify the other.

See CS2 Premier vs FACEIT.

How to Climb in Season 5

The fundamentals remain the same, but the current map system rewards players who prepare several maps rather than relying entirely on one comfort pick.

Focus on:

  1. maintaining a realistic current map pool;
  2. tracking which maps produce your lowest win rate;
  3. avoiding long tilt sessions;
  4. watching your actual +gain / -loss before each match;
  5. improving utility rather than relying only on aim;
  6. playing for round conversion and economy;
  7. using reliable teammates where possible.

For a full climbing plan, see How to Rank Up in CS2 Premier.

How Many Matches to Reach Your Season 5 Goal?

That depends on your:

  • current rating;
  • target rating;
  • win rate;
  • rating gained per win;
  • rating lost per defeat.

Use our CS2 Premier Win Rate Calculator for a mathematical estimate.

Season 5 Checklist

  • Season 5 began July 8, 2026.
  • Cache is in Premier.
  • Overpass is out.
  • Current pool has seven maps.
  • Old ban-down-to-one map-selection guides are outdated.
  • The new four-map selection has applied since September 22.
  • 30K is not the maximum CS Rating.
  • Season medal and rating progression are separate concepts.
  • No official Season 5 end date has been announced.
  • No official Season 6 start date has been announced.
Bottom line: CS2 Premier Season 5 is not simply “Season 4 with Cache.” Cache replaced Overpass on July 8, and Valve then rebuilt Premier map selection on September 22. The current competitive environment therefore uses seven Active Duty maps plus a new four-map pick-and-random-selection process. Season 5 remains active, with no official end date announced as of October 28, 2026.
