Pre-release note: This guide is based on the current Patch 12.1 PTR and official pre-release information. Requirements, rewards and numerical values may change before launch.
The Lost Explorers is the fourth encounter in The Venomous Abyss, the eight-boss raid arriving with World of Warcraft: Midnight Season 2. The fight is a council encounter against three possessed tortollan explorers: Scrollsage Iku, First Mate Nama and Trader Gebbo. The raid must keep the explorers positioned correctly, interrupt dangerous casts, collect Disgusting Fish and prevent Mor’zahi from completing his control sequence.
The encounter is available for Normal, Heroic and Mythic testing, but exact damage values, health tuning and some difficulty-specific mechanics are not final. The core strategy is already clear: separate the explorers, manage the controlled target, use Disgusting Fish at the correct time and prevent Mor’zahi from reaching full energy.

Encounter Overview
The Lost Explorers is not a conventional single-target boss fight. Three explorers are active at the same time, while Mor’zahi manipulates them from the encounter area. Each explorer has a separate role and ability set. Their positions, health totals and control state must be managed together.
Do not allow the explorers to remain stacked unless your raid is deliberately using a tested positioning strategy. When the explorers are too close together, their defensive effects become substantially stronger. At the same time, separating them too far can make interrupts, healing and movement mechanics more difficult.
The safest general approach is to assign one tank to First Mate Nama and the other to either Scrollsage Iku or Trader Gebbo. Keep the third explorer far enough away to prevent the council defensive effect while ensuring that every interrupt and important mechanic remains reachable.

The Lost Explorers Bosses and Their Roles
Scrollsage Iku
Scrollsage Iku is the caster of the council. Iku’s dangerous abilities are primarily frost- and fire-based spells, including Icebound Flames and Frostfire Volley. Interrupt assignments should be established before the pull, and players should not rely on incidental interrupts when Iku is being controlled or empowered.
- Assign reliable interrupts to Iku’s most dangerous casts.
- Move away from targeted effects instead of placing them beneath the active tank.
- Keep Iku separated from the other explorers when the council defensive effect is active.
- Prepare for heavier frostfire damage when Mor’zahi empowers Iku.
First Mate Nama
First Mate Nama is the main melee threat and creates the most direct tank-management pressure. Nama applies stacking physical effects that require tank swaps and uses attacks that can punish players standing in front of the boss.
- Keep Nama facing away from the raid.
- Swap when Nama’s tank debuffs become dangerous rather than waiting for an emergency.
- Spread or pre-assign players for absorption zones created by Nama’s empowered abilities.
- Do not allow the raid to drift into Nama’s frontal attacks while handling another mechanic.
Trader Gebbo
Trader Gebbo controls much of the encounter’s interaction gameplay. Gebbo creates barrels or related objects around the arena, which are connected to obtaining Disgusting Fish. These objects may involve a short interaction, movement risk or damage-over-time effect.
- Assign mobile players to collect Disgusting Fish when possible.
- Do not delay the interaction until Mor’zahi is close to full energy.
- Keep Gebbo positioned so that the raid can reach the required objects without crossing dangerous ground effects.
- Continue to watch Gebbo’s health while the raid handles the other explorers.
Mor’zahi
Mor’zahi is the encounter’s central control mechanic. The spirit maintains control over one of the explorers and builds energy during the fight. If Mor’zahi reaches the relevant energy threshold, the raid is overwhelmed by the control sequence and the encounter can become unrecoverable.
Use Disgusting Fish to disrupt Mor’zahi’s concentration and break or interrupt the current control effect. When control is broken, Mor’zahi can respond by forcing an empowered ability sequence through the affected explorer. The raid should therefore use the fish deliberately rather than treating it as a routine damage button.
Core Mechanics and How to Handle Them
Aura of Unity and Explorer Separation
The explorers gain a powerful defensive benefit when they are positioned too close together. The exact strength and radius may change before launch, but the practical rule is stable: assign clear locations for each explorer and keep the council spread without making the encounter impossible to heal.
Tanks should establish the separation immediately after the pull. DPS players should avoid dragging a boss toward another explorer while handling a personal mechanic. If a boss must be moved, the tank should communicate the new position before the defensive effect becomes active.
Dark Whispers and Binding Anguish
Dark Whispers represents Mor’zahi’s control over one of the explorers. The controlled explorer becomes more dangerous if the effect is allowed to continue, while breaking the control can trigger Binding Anguish and an empowered ability sequence.
- Identify which explorer is being controlled.
- Confirm that the assigned player has a Disgusting Fish available.
- Use the fish to interrupt Mor’zahi’s concentration at the raid’s assigned call.
- Move immediately for the empowered ability created by the control break.
- Resume the normal positioning and interrupt assignments.
Do not use every fish as soon as it becomes available. The raid needs enough access to the interaction to prevent Mor’zahi from reaching a dangerous energy state.
Disgusting Fish
Disgusting Fish are collected through the encounter objects created by Trader Gebbo. They are the main resource used to disrupt Mor’zahi. The exact number of fish required and the timing of the interaction remain subject to PTR tuning.
Before the pull, assign players who can safely leave their position to collect fish. Ranged DPS and mobile utility players are usually the most suitable candidates, but the final assignment depends on class composition and the live version of the encounter.
Players carrying a fish should not die with it, use it without a call or leave it in an inaccessible part of the arena. The raid leader should announce when the fish is required and which explorer is the current priority.
Icebound Flames
Icebound Flames is one of Iku’s important caster abilities. Interrupt it consistently, especially when Iku is empowered. A missed interrupt can combine with the encounter’s passive raid damage and quickly overwhelm healers.
- Create a rotation rather than assigning every interrupt to one player.
- Use backup interrupts when the primary interrupter is moving for a mechanic.
- Prioritize the cast over unnecessary damage movement.
- Keep Iku within interrupt range of the assigned players.
Frostfire Volley and Elemental Explosion
Frostfire Volley places frost- and fire-related effects around players. These effects must be positioned carefully because combining the wrong effects can trigger Elemental Explosion and create a large raid-wide damage event.
Spread targeted effects according to the raid’s assigned side or color. Do not place a new effect directly on top of an existing one unless the encounter strategy specifically calls for it. After the ground effects appear, move back to your assigned location without cutting through another player’s area.
Evil Eyes and Ground Effects
Evil Eyes creates hazardous areas that reduce available space. The mechanic is especially dangerous when combined with the explorers’ separation requirements, so tanks should avoid placing bosses near the center unless necessary.
Ranged players should use the outer portions of the arena responsibly. Melee players should leave enough room for tanks to reposition the explorers. When the arena becomes crowded, prioritize survival and boss separation over maintaining perfect uptime.
Role Responsibilities
Tank Responsibilities
- Assign and maintain separate positions for Nama, Iku and Gebbo.
- Keep Nama facing away from the raid.
- Perform tank swaps for Nama’s stacking physical effects and any comparable debuff from the other explorers.
- Move bosses only when necessary, preserving interrupt range and fish access.
- Communicate before moving an explorer through a ground effect.
- Do not stack the council bosses and accidentally activate their strongest defensive benefit.
Healer Responsibilities
- Prepare for steady raid damage from Malevolent Presence and the council’s control mechanics.
- Use external cooldowns during empowered explorer abilities and Elemental Explosion.
- Watch the player assigned to collect Disgusting Fish, especially if the interaction applies a bleed or damage-over-time effect.
- Keep tanks stable during swaps and frontal-attack mistakes.
- Save strong area healing for moments when frostfire effects overlap with unavoidable raid damage.
DPS Responsibilities
- Maintain the assigned interrupt rotation on Iku.
- Collect Disgusting Fish when assigned and use them only on the raid call.
- Keep explorer health totals reasonably close unless the raid leader assigns a different priority.
- Move targeted frost, fire and eye effects away from the raid.
- Stop attacking briefly when a mechanic requires an interaction or controlled target change.
- Use personal defensives for empowered abilities rather than saving every cooldown for the final phase.
Recommended Target and Positioning Strategy
The exact optimal target order depends on the final tuning and the raid’s chosen strategy. A practical starting plan is to keep Nama and Iku under close control while positioning Gebbo farther away, then bring the explorers into a synchronized health range before finishing them.
Do not kill one explorer early without confirming that the remaining bosses do not gain a permanent empowerment. Council encounters often become harder when one target dies, and the current test version includes empowered sequences tied to the explorers’ control state.
Keep the bosses within a manageable triangle rather than placing them at opposite edges of the arena. This gives the raid enough room to handle separation while allowing interrupts, healing and Disgusting Fish interactions to remain practical.
Normal, Heroic and Mythic Differences
Normal
Normal difficulty is expected to retain the encounter’s full control, fish and separation gameplay, but with more forgiving damage and timing. Use Normal to learn the arena layout, interrupt order and Disgusting Fish assignment.
Heroic
Heroic increases the punishment for missed interrupts, poor ground-effect placement and late tank swaps. The raid should use dedicated interrupt rotations and assign fish collectors before entering the encounter. Empowered explorer abilities require coordinated movement rather than individual reactions.
Mythic
The Mythic version is not fully finalized in the current PTR. Do not treat datamined or incomplete Mythic ability lists as confirmed mechanics. The core expectations are stricter positioning, higher damage, less room for missed interrupts and greater pressure on Mor’zahi’s energy management.
Any Mythic-specific additions, exact timing requirements and numerical thresholds should be updated after the encounter receives its final live implementation.
Common Wipe Causes
- Allowing the explorers to stack and gain their defensive effect.
- Missing Icebound Flames or another high-priority caster interrupt.
- Using Disgusting Fish too early and having none available for Mor’zahi’s dangerous energy state.
- Overlapping frost and fire effects and triggering Elemental Explosion.
- Moving Nama through the raid or leaving the boss facing players.
- Letting the fish collector die before completing the interaction.
- Focusing one explorer so heavily that the remaining bosses reach an empowered state unexpectedly.
- Placing ground effects in the route needed for tank movement or fish collection.
Loot and Tier Set Relevance
The Lost Explorers contributes shoulder tier pieces and class-specific tier tokens for The Venomous Abyss. It also has its own encounter loot, including weapons, armor and other raid items. Exact item levels depend on difficulty and the final Season 2 loot structure.
Use the encounter primarily when you need its specific shoulder tier source or an item listed on the final loot table. Raid gear can also become relevant for the Great Vault and Catalyst, but the final item-level mapping should be checked after Season 2 launches.
Preparation Checklist
- Bring a reliable interrupt setup and assign a rotation before the pull.
- Choose fish collectors who can leave their position safely.
- Assign tank locations for Nama, Iku and Gebbo.
- Mark the arena locations for frost and fire effects.
- Agree on the call for breaking Dark Whispers.
- Prepare defensive cooldowns for Elemental Explosion and empowered explorer abilities.
- Decide whether the raid will balance all three bosses or use a controlled priority strategy.
- Review the final Adventure Guide after launch for updated Mythic mechanics and numerical values.
