Need Help Clearing a WoW Raid?
Pre-release note: This guide is based on the current Patch 12.1 PTR and official pre-release information. Requirements, rewards and numerical values may change before launch.

Sszorak is the fifth encounter in The Venomous Abyss, the Patch 12.1 raid introduced with Curse of Ula’tek and Midnight Season 2. The fight takes place on the Altar of the Six Winds and combines heavy tank damage, constant raid-wide pressure, targeted ground effects and powerful wind knockbacks. On Normal and Heroic, the encounter is built around correctly handling Venomous Surge, Raging Crosswinds and Howling Maelstrom while maximizing damage during Sszorak’s Dig In window. Mythic-specific mechanics are not yet fully confirmed, so this guide separates the established encounter mechanics from information that still requires final live verification.

Sszorak Encounter Strategy

The basic strategy is to keep Sszorak positioned safely near the centre of the platform, place Venomous Surge effects away from the raid, spread for Raging Crosswinds and stay coordinated during Howling Maelstrom. Tanks must manage Corroding Venom while controlling the direction of Sszorak’s frontal attacks. Healers should treat the fight as an attrition encounter with repeated bursts rather than a battle containing only one or two predictable damage events.

Damage dealers should save major offensive cooldowns for Howling Maelstrom whenever possible. During this ability, Sszorak uses Dig In, becomes immune to forced movement and takes increased damage. This is the clearest burn window in the encounter.

Sszorak does not require a special class composition on Normal or Heroic, but the raid benefits from strong movement tools, reliable defensives and enough healing throughput to handle constant environmental damage.

  • Use two tanks for the standard raid encounter.
  • Bring enough healers to cover continuous damage from Ula’tek’s Presence and the heavier bursts during Apex Predator, Venomous Surge and Raging Crosswinds.
  • Prioritize players who can maintain damage while moving.
  • Movement abilities and immunities are useful when the wind effects overlap, but they do not replace correct positioning.
  • Assign a clear area of the platform for dropping Viscous Cysts before the pull.

Positioning for Sszorak

Keep Sszorak close enough to the centre of the altar that the raid has room to react to wind effects from every direction. The exact position can be adjusted by the raid leader, but the group should avoid fighting close to the platform edge.

  • The active tank faces Sszorak away from the raid.
  • The off-tank remains close enough to intercept or split the required frontal attacks.
  • Melee players stay behind or to the side of Sszorak unless handling a mechanic.
  • Ranged players spread in a loose formation so Raging Crosswinds and Venomous Surge do not overlap the entire raid.
  • Place Viscous Cysts at the outer edges of the usable platform, but not where the wind can push players into them.
  • During Howling Maelstrom, move with the intended direction of the wind rather than fighting it unnecessarily.

Sszorak Abilities and Responsibilities

Ula’tek’s Presence

Ula’tek’s Presence is a passive source of recurring raid-wide damage. It creates continuous pressure throughout the encounter and makes avoidable damage especially dangerous. Healers should maintain efficient raid healing rather than allowing the group to remain low between mechanics.

Players should use personal defensives before predictable damage events if their health is already reduced. Healers should avoid spending every major cooldown at the start of the fight, because later combinations of wind effects and tank damage can be more demanding.

Apex Predator

Apex Predator is a sequence of attacks that combines Ravage, Mutilate and Tempest. The ability is dangerous because the raid must manage frontal positioning, tank damage and area effects in a short period.

  • Tanks: Face Sszorak away from the raid and coordinate the frontal attacks carefully.
  • Raid: Do not stand in front of Sszorak unless the strategy specifically requires you to help split Mutilate.
  • Healers: Prepare for a concentrated period of tank and raid damage.
  • Everyone: Avoid the poison vortices created by Tempest and do not allow the slow to interfere with the next movement mechanic.

Ravage

Ravage is a frontal attack that increases the damage taken from subsequent Ravage casts. The stacking effect makes careless tank positioning increasingly dangerous.

The active tank should keep Sszorak pointed away from other players and use defensive cooldowns as the vulnerability effect builds. Tanks should establish a clear swap plan before the pull rather than waiting until the stacks become dangerous.

Mutilate

Mutilate is a powerful frontal cone that can be split by players when required. The raid should follow the assigned positioning plan exactly. If the strategy uses a shared soak, only the designated players should enter the cone; if the strategy leaves the attack for the tank, every other player must remain behind Sszorak.

Avoid turning Sszorak across the melee group while repositioning. A sudden cone can kill several players even when the main mechanic appears to be handled correctly.

Tempest

Tempest creates poison vortices that deal damage and slow affected players. The slow is particularly dangerous when it overlaps with Raging Crosswinds or Howling Maelstrom.

  • Move out of the vortices immediately.
  • Do not deliberately drag Sszorak through active Tempest areas.
  • Keep escape routes open before the next wind mechanic begins.
  • Use movement abilities only after identifying the direction in which the raid must travel.

Venomous Surge

Venomous Surge targets several players with repeated pulses before expiring in a burst. Each affected player then creates a Viscous Cyst at their location.

Targeted players should move to preassigned drop zones while maintaining enough distance from one another. Do not place the effects in the melee stack, beside the tank, in the centre of the platform or directly along the raid’s planned movement route.

After the effect expires, the Viscous Cyst remains dangerous. Touching it knocks players away and slows them, so players must leave the drop zone quickly and avoid cutting across other players’ cysts.

Viscous Cysts

Viscous Cysts are persistent hazards created by Venomous Surge. Their knockback is often more dangerous than their direct damage because it can send players toward the platform edge or into another cyst.

  • Place cysts consistently on the outside of the arena.
  • Never drop one behind the active tank.
  • Do not use a personal movement ability through a cyst unless there is no safer route.
  • During wind mechanics, treat every cyst as a hard boundary.

Raging Crosswinds

Raging Crosswinds deals repeated damage before ending with a burst that pushes nearby players in the direction of the wind. It also applies Turbulent Gusts to affected players.

Spread before the effect expires. Players standing too close together can cause unnecessary damage and make the resulting movement harder to control. The raid should agree on whether players move clockwise, counter-clockwise or toward a specific side of the platform before the pull.

Turbulent Gusts

Turbulent Gusts reduces fall speed and is removed when the affected player collides with another player carrying the same effect. The mechanic requires deliberate movement rather than random running.

  • Move toward your assigned partner after the Raging Crosswinds burst.
  • Do not collide with an unmarked player.
  • Do not cross through the tank or the melee group unnecessarily.
  • Resolve the effect before the next major knockback whenever possible.

If your raid uses assigned pairs, mark the pairs before the pull. If it uses a loose collision strategy, establish a safe side of the platform where affected players can meet without blocking the rest of the raid.

Howling Maelstrom

Howling Maelstrom sends strong gales across the altar and pushes players around the arena. During the ability, Sszorak uses Dig In, becoming immune to forced movement and taking increased damage.

This is both the most dangerous movement phase and the encounter’s main damage opportunity. Players should move with the wind, avoid the platform edge and keep away from Viscous Cysts. Once the raid is stable, damage dealers should use their strongest cooldowns on Sszorak.

  • Tanks: Keep Sszorak in a safe location and do not allow the boss to drift toward a cyst or the edge.
  • Healers: Use raid cooldowns for the combination of wind damage, Ula’tek’s Presence and any remaining debuffs.
  • DPS: Continue attacking while moving and use movement tools to maintain uptime rather than attempting to ignore the wind.

Dig In

Dig In makes Sszorak immune to movement effects and increases the damage he takes. The ability creates a short period in which the raid can deal substantially more damage if players are already positioned safely.

Do not sacrifice survival for uptime. A player knocked from the platform contributes no damage, and a badly placed cyst can make the following movement sequence much harder. Use personal defensive cooldowns first if your position is unsafe, then return to damage once the danger has passed.

Corroding Venom

Corroding Venom is the primary tank-management mechanic. Melee attacks apply stacks that increase the physical damage taken by the affected tank for a limited duration.

Swap before the stacks become unmanageable and avoid swapping during a frontal cast unless the raid has specifically planned the movement. The tank taking Sszorak should use active mitigation consistently, while the other tank remains ready to take control immediately after the swap.

Normal and Heroic Differences

DifficultyWhat ChangesPractical Response
NormalCore wind, venom and tank mechanics are present with more forgiving damage and movement requirements.Learn drop locations, wind directions and tank swaps before progressing to Heroic.
HeroicHigher damage and reduced room for mistakes make overlapping mechanics more dangerous.Use assigned pairs for Turbulent Gusts, pre-plan cooldowns and keep cyst locations consistent.
MythicMythic-specific mechanics and final tuning require confirmation.Do not rely on Normal or Heroic positioning alone; update assignments after the live encounter is verified.

Heroic Sszorak Cooldown Plan

Heroic groups should plan cooldowns around predictable damage rather than using every ability on pull.

  1. Use moderate healing cooldowns during the first major Apex Predator if the raid is still learning the timing.
  2. Reserve a strong raid cooldown for Raging Crosswinds when it overlaps with Ula’tek’s Presence or other unresolved damage.
  3. Assign personal defensives to players targeted by Venomous Surge if they are likely to be hit by a cyst or wind effect while moving.
  4. Use major offensive cooldowns during Howling Maelstrom and Dig In.
  5. Save emergency healing and external defensives for late-fight combinations, when Corroding Venom and repeated movement can overlap.

Role-by-Role Sszorak Guide

Tank Responsibilities

  • Keep Sszorak facing away from the raid.
  • Coordinate the handling of Mutilate and Ravage.
  • Swap for Corroding Venom according to the agreed stack plan.
  • Keep the boss away from Viscous Cysts.
  • Position Sszorak so the raid can move with the wind without crossing the boss.
  • Use defensive cooldowns during Apex Predator and high Corroding Venom stacks.

Healer Responsibilities

  • Expect continuous damage from Ula’tek’s Presence.
  • Prepare for tank spikes during Apex Predator.
  • Keep targeted players healthy while they move to drop Venomous Surge.
  • Use raid cooldowns during Raging Crosswinds and Howling Maelstrom.
  • Watch players slowed by Tempest or Turbulent Gusts, since delayed movement can lead to lethal knockbacks.
  • Do not let the raid enter a wind phase with several players already critically low.

DPS Responsibilities

  • Stay out of Sszorak’s frontal attacks.
  • Place Venomous Surge effects away from the group.
  • Spread for Raging Crosswinds and resolve Turbulent Gusts correctly.
  • Prioritize survival during Howling Maelstrom.
  • Use offensive cooldowns during Dig In.
  • Maintain damage while moving whenever it is safe to do so.

Common Sszorak Wipe Causes

  • Dropping Viscous Cysts in the centre of the arena.
  • Allowing a cyst to spawn behind the boss or beside the tank.
  • Standing too close together when Raging Crosswinds expires.
  • Running against the wind during Howling Maelstrom and being pushed into the edge.
  • Turning Mutilate or Ravage through the raid.
  • Failing to move away from Tempest vortices before the next mechanic begins.
  • Using every defensive cooldown early and having nothing available for the final wind sequence.
  • Overcommitting to damage during Dig In and losing players to avoidable knockbacks.

Sszorak Loot and Rewards

Sszorak is one of the tier-token encounters in The Venomous Abyss and is associated with the legs tier slot. The boss also has the Idol of the Howling Nexus among its encounter rewards. Exact item levels, upgrade tracks and drop details should be checked against the live Adventure Guide after Patch 12.1 launches, because those values are subject to final tuning.

Defeating Sszorak also contributes to The Venomous Abyss raid-clear achievements and the encounter-specific achievement Jumping Through Hoops. The achievement requires players to interact with the encounter’s ring mechanic while defeating Sszorak; the final live achievement conditions should be confirmed in-game before attempting it on progression.

Practical Preparation Checklist

  • Read the encounter abilities in the Adventure Guide before entering the raid.
  • Set a raid marker for the primary Venomous Surge drop area.
  • Assign Turbulent Gusts partners or define a shared collision area.
  • Agree on the direction for movement during Howling Maelstrom.
  • Prepare tank swap and defensive-cooldown assignments.
  • Use an arena or encounter warning addon that clearly shows wind direction and targeted effects.
  • Do not place cysts where the raid must travel during the next mechanic.
  • Save offensive cooldowns for Dig In unless the raid’s strategy requires a different timing.

Mythic Sszorak Status

The encounter is intended to be available on Mythic difficulty as part of The Venomous Abyss. However, Mythic-specific mechanics and final numerical tuning are not sufficiently confirmed for a complete Mythic progression strategy. The Normal and Heroic fundamentals remain the correct preparation: control tank stacks, keep frontal attacks away from the raid, place cysts consistently, resolve wind movement as a group and maximize the Dig In damage window.

Once Mythic testing or live progression provides reliable information, update this section with confirmed additional mechanics, new assignments, failure points and cooldown timings. Do not treat unverified datamining or incomplete testing as a final Mythic strategy.
