In Midnight Season 2, Mistcrests are the upgrade materials for PvE gear from Adventurer through Myth. Each upgrade track contains six ranks, and every rank increases an item’s level by three or four points. The standard Season 2 upgrade system reaches item level 328 at Myth 6/6, while special raid items can reach item level 334 or 337 through additional upgrades and higher track ranks.

Gear tracks overlap at several item levels. The track displayed on a newly obtained item determines which Mistcrest type you need. For example, Champion 5/6 and Hero 1/6 both provide item level 298, but Champion gear requires Champion Mistcrests while Hero gear requires Hero Mistcrests.

The chart shows both the item level and the upgrade rank. A higher track is usually more valuable than a lower track at the same item level because it can be upgraded with a stronger Mistcrest type and eventually reaches a higher maximum.

How Mistcrest Upgrades Work
Midnight Season 2 uses five upgrade currencies rather than the previous combination of crests and a separate universal upgrade currency. Mistcrests are spent directly at the gear upgrade interface, together with a small gold fee.
- Travel to the gear upgrade area in Silvermoon City.
- Speak with Cuzolth to open the item upgrade interface.
- Place the eligible item into the upgrade window.
- Choose the next available rank on the item’s upgrade track.
- Confirm the Mistcrest and gold cost.
Each standard upgrade raises the item by one rank. Items cannot normally be moved to another track, so a Champion item remains Champion equipment even if its item level overlaps with Veteran or Hero gear.
How many Mistcrests does one upgrade cost?
Each standard upgrade costs 20 Mistcrests of the matching type. A complete six-rank track therefore costs up to 120 Mistcrests, although character and Warband discounts can reduce the amount required for replacement pieces and alternate characters.

The exact cost displayed by the upgrade window can be lower when a character has already reached the same or a higher item level in that equipment slot. Always check the final confirmation window before accepting an upgrade.
What Each Mistcrest Type Upgrades
Adventurer Mistcrest
Adventurer Mistcrests upgrade Adventurer equipment from item level 259 through 276. They are intended for the first stage of Season 2 gearing and generally come from repeatable outdoor activities, lower-tier Delves and similar introductory content.
Adventurer gear is useful when replacing Season 1 equipment, gearing a newly leveled character or filling slots before entering group content. Avoid spending large amounts on pieces that are likely to be replaced quickly by Veteran or Champion gear.
Veteran Mistcrest
Veteran Mistcrests upgrade Veteran equipment from item level 272 through 289. They are available from Heroic seasonal dungeons, Raid Finder difficulty in The Venomous Abyss, mid-tier Delves and Trovehunter’s Bounty activities.
Veteran gear is a practical stepping stone into Normal raids and Mythic+ progression. Upgrade weapons, trinkets and permanent replacements first, particularly when a slot is substantially below the rest of the character’s equipment.
Champion Mistcrest
Champion Mistcrests upgrade Champion equipment from item level 285 through 302. They are earned through Normal difficulty in The Venomous Abyss, Mythic seasonal dungeons, lower Mythic+ keys, higher-tier Delves and weekly outdoor content.
Champion is the main bridge between entry-level gearing and Hero equipment. Champion 6/6 reaches item level 302, but a Hero 2/6 item has the same item level and belongs to the stronger Hero track. Do not automatically replace a fully upgraded Champion item with a low-rank Hero item unless the higher track gives you a meaningful future upgrade.
Hero Mistcrest
Hero Mistcrests upgrade Hero equipment from item level 298 through 315. The primary sources are Heroic raids, Mythic+ keys from the middle range upward, Tier 11 Delves and the highest Trovehunter’s Bounty tiers.
Hero gear is usually worth upgrading for long-term use because it reaches item level 315 and provides access to the strongest standard pre-Myth progression. Prioritize weapons, trinkets and tier-set pieces only after confirming that the item is a genuine upgrade for your specialization.
Myth Mistcrest
Myth Mistcrests upgrade Myth equipment from item level 311 through 328. Myth Mistcrests come from Mythic difficulty in The Venomous Abyss and higher Mythic+ keystone levels.
Myth equipment is the standard endgame upgrade track. Because Myth Mistcrests are limited by their weekly acquisition cap, spend them on items that are likely to remain equipped for a long period. A small item-level increase on a replaceable ring is usually less valuable than finishing a weapon, trinket or permanent tier slot.

The Curse of Ula’tek content update adds the Coiled Isle, The Venomous Abyss, the Altar of Fangs dungeon, new Delves and additional outdoor activities. These activities expand the ways to obtain Season 2 equipment and Mistcrests, but each activity still awards the Mistcrest type associated with its difficulty and reward track.
Mistcrest Weekly Caps
Each Mistcrest type has its own weekly acquisition cap. The cap is tracked separately for Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero and Myth Mistcrests, allowing players to earn several different types during the same reset.
Because every upgrade uses the matching Mistcrest, a character cannot use Myth Mistcrests to upgrade Hero equipment or Hero Mistcrests to upgrade Champion equipment. Plan upgrades around the track of the item rather than the item level alone.
How Mistcrest Discounts Work
Slot-based upgrade discounts
Once a character has reached a particular item level in an equipment slot, upgrading another item in that slot up to the same level can cost fewer or no Mistcrests. This is designed to make replacement items and off-spec gear less expensive.
For example, if a character has already reached a high item level with a cloak, a second cloak can benefit from the character’s existing progress in that slot. The discount does not automatically change the item’s track or allow an incompatible Mistcrest type to be used.
Warband upgrade discounts
Seasonal achievements tied to reaching the required item level in every armor slot unlock Warband benefits for alternate characters. These benefits reduce the Mistcrest cost for the corresponding upgrade track and can also allow the exchange of lower-tier Mistcrests into the next higher type.
The discount is track-specific. Unlocking the Champion benefit does not automatically reduce the cost of Hero or Myth upgrades. Each achievement must be earned at the required seasonal progression level.
Trading Mistcrests upward
After unlocking the associated achievement, players can exchange three lower-tier Mistcrests for one Mistcrest of the next rank through Vaskarn. This exchange is useful when a character has surplus lower-tier materials but needs a small amount of a higher-tier Mistcrest.
Do not convert Mistcrests before checking upcoming upgrade plans. Lower-tier materials remain useful for replacement gear, off-spec items and newly geared characters.
Which Gear Should You Upgrade First?
- Upgrade permanent weapons first. Weapons affect damage or healing directly and are often difficult to replace with an equally strong item.
- Prioritize strong trinkets. A high-value trinket can remain competitive even when another slot receives a modest item-level upgrade.
- Finish important tier-set pieces carefully. Check whether the item contributes to a set bonus before spending Mistcrests.
- Use discounts on replacement gear. Slot-based reductions are most valuable when restoring a character after a better item drops.
- Do not upgrade every temporary item. Save Mistcrests for gear that is likely to survive the next stage of progression.
- Match the currency to the track. The item tooltip and upgrade interface show the required Mistcrest type.
A practical Season 2 progression path is to use Adventurer and Veteran gear to enter organized content, move into Champion equipment through Normal raid, Mythic dungeons and Delves, then reserve Hero and Myth Mistcrests for items earned from the highest content you regularly complete.
Special Myth Raid Upgrades Above 328
Standard Myth equipment ends at Myth 6/6 and item level 328. Certain high-end raid items can progress beyond the standard cap through special Season 2 upgrade systems.

These items are not part of the normal Mistcrest 1/6 through 6/6 chart. A regular Myth item cannot be upgraded to item level 334 or 337 simply by spending additional Myth Mistcrests.
Common Mistcrest Upgrade Mistakes
- Confusing item level with upgrade track: Two items with the same item level can require different Mistcrests.
- Spending high-tier Mistcrests on temporary gear: Wait when an item is likely to be replaced soon.
- Ignoring slot discounts: Check the upgrade window before paying the full cost for a replacement item.
- Using the wrong comparison: Compare the item’s rank and maximum track, not only its current item level.
- Converting all lower-tier Mistcrests: Keep enough materials for off-spec, replacement and alternate-character gear.
- Assuming Hero Mistcrests upgrade Champion items: Each track uses its own Mistcrest type.
- Forgetting special raid limits: Myth 6/6 is the standard cap; higher item levels require eligible special raid upgrades.
