Mistcrests are the main PvE gear-upgrade currency in WoW Midnight Season 2. There are five types — Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero and Myth — and each one upgrades the matching gear track. The standard upgrade ladder now runs from item level 266 to 334.
Quick answer: every normal upgrade step costs 20 Mistcrests. An item already starts at 1/6, so upgrading it from 1/6 to 6/6 requires five paid steps — 100 Mistcrests before discounts, not 120.
Adventurer gear runs from 266–282, Veteran 279–295, Champion 292–308, Hero 305–321 and Myth 318–334. A higher track can overlap a lower track at the same item level while still having considerably more upgrade potential.

This is why upgrade track matters as much as current item level. A Myth 1/6 item at 318 normally has much more long-term value than another 318 item already near the top of Hero track.
How Mistcrest Upgrades Work
Gear is upgraded through Cuzolth in Silvermoon City near the Sanctum of Light:

- Select the eligible item.
- Choose one or more available ranks.
- Review the required Mistcrest type and total cost.
- Confirm the upgrade.
An item's upgrade track does not normally change. A Champion item remains Champion even when its item level overlaps with Hero gear.

How to Get Adventurer Mistcrests
Adventurer Mistcrests are the entry-level Season 2 upgrade currency. Do not overfarm them if your character can already enter Champion-level content. Their main value is repairing weak slots and moving a fresh level 90 through the first gearing stage.
How to Get Hero Mistcrests
For most established characters, M+4–8 is the most repeatable source. Heroic Venomous Abyss is also important, particularly when the same run can provide useful Hero-track gear.
How to Get Myth Mistcrests
Mythic+ +9 and higher is the most repeatable dungeon source. Mythic raid also awards Myth Mistcrests, and Season 2 includes additional high-end sources such as eligible Tier 11 Bountiful Delve rewards.

Mistcrest Upgrade Discounts
Free Slot Upgrades
If you have already reached a higher item level in an eligible armor slot, another item for that slot can be upgraded toward your existing high-water mark without paying the normal Mistcrest cost for those covered levels.
This is designed to make replacements and alternate pieces less punishing. Always check Cuzolth's UI because non-standard slots and individual items can behave differently.

Can You Convert Mistcrests?
Yes. Vaskarn is located beside Cuzolth and handles crest exchanges.
Higher crests can be converted downward at a 1:1 quantity after the vendor functions are unlocked. Progression achievements also unlock upward exchanges at a 30 lower → 10 higher ratio.

Do not automatically convert all lower crests upward. Lower currencies remain useful for replacement items, off-spec equipment and alts, while upward exchanges consume three times as many crests.

Mistcrest Cap and Patch 12.1.5
Current as of October 9: Season 2 still uses Mistcrest caps. Blizzard has officially announced that the crest cap will be removed during the week of October 20.
This is why the guide does not build its long-term farming recommendations around a fixed weekly-cap number. If you are reading this after the October 20 reset, the cap is no longer intended to restrict Season 2 crest farming.
Mistcrests vs Ascendant Venomstones
Ascendant Venomstones do not replace Mistcrests. They are a separate late-season progression layer.
After Patch 12.1.5 launches and Orin Straylight completes his research during the week of October 20, Venomstones can drop from:
- every Heroic or Mythic raid boss;
- Mythic+ +10 and higher;
- Tier 11 Bountiful Delves;
- Nightmare Prey Hunt Champion gear chests.
Collecting 10 Ascendant Venomstones lets you raise the item level of an eligible fully upgraded Season 2 Hero or Myth item, or a maximum-quality Tidal Crafted weapon, trinket or necklace.
Practical implication: Mistcrests still take the item to its normal full upgrade point. Venomstones then become relevant to eligible endgame pieces after they are fully upgraded.
What Gear Should You Upgrade First?
- Long-term weapons.
- High-value trinkets you are likely to keep.
- Pieces completing your 2-set or 4-set.
- Myth items and strong long-term Hero items.
- Large item-level gaps in weak slots.
- Temporary gear only when the upgrade solves an immediate progression problem.
Common Mistcrest Mistakes
1/6 is the starting rank. Only five upgrades are purchased.
Track ceiling can matter more than a tiny current item-level difference.
Low-track items are frequently replaced before the investment pays off.
Check slot high-water marks and Warband achievements before spending.
A 3:1 upward exchange is expensive if you still need the lower tier.
A permanent weapon upgrade that helps progression now can be worth spending on.
