Ahead of the Curve: Ula’tek and Cutting Edge: Ula’tek are the two time-limited raid achievements for The Venomous Abyss in WoW Midnight Season 2. Ahead of the Curve requires defeating Ula’tek on Heroic difficulty or higher, while Cutting Edge requires a Mythic Ula’tek kill before the current raid tier ends.
The Venomous Abyss opens with Midnight Season 2 on August 18, 2026 in North America and August 19 in Europe. From that point, players can begin earning both achievements. This guide explains the exact AotC and Cutting Edge requirements, deadlines, raid difficulties, rewards, Mythic Ula’tek cosmetics, preparation priorities, and the fastest route to each achievement.
AotC and Cutting Edge in Midnight Season 2
| Achievement | Required Boss | Difficulty | Full Clear Required? | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ahead of the Curve: Ula’tek | Ula’tek | Heroic or higher | No | During the current Midnight Season 2 raid tier |
| Cutting Edge: Ula’tek | Ula’tek | Mythic | No | During the current Midnight Season 2 raid tier |
Both are Feats of Strength tied specifically to the final boss of The Venomous Abyss. They are not separate raid difficulties and they do not require earning every achievement inside the raid.

When Can You Earn AotC and Cutting Edge: Ula’tek?
The achievements become obtainable when The Venomous Abyss opens:
| Region | Raid Opens | Available Difficulties |

| Europe | August 19, 2026 | Normal, Heroic, Mythic, Raid Finder Wing 1 |

How to Earn Ahead of the Curve: Ula’tek
Ahead of the Curve: Ula’tek requires defeating Ula’tek in The Venomous Abyss on Heroic difficulty or higher while the achievement remains active.
You do not need an 8/8 Heroic clear for the achievement itself. If your raid already has access to Ula’tek through a saved lockout, joining only the final-boss kill can still satisfy the AotC requirement.
AotC Requirements
- Play a level-90 character eligible to enter The Venomous Abyss.
- Defeat Ula’tek, the eighth and final boss.
- Use Heroic or Mythic difficulty.
- Complete the kill while Ahead of the Curve: Ula’tek is still available.
- Be present and eligible when Ula’tek dies.
Does Normal Ula’tek Give AotC?
No. Normal difficulty does not meet the requirement. You must defeat Ula’tek on Heroic or Mythic.
Does a Mythic Ula’tek Kill Also Give AotC?
Yes. Ahead of the Curve specifies Heroic difficulty or higher. Therefore, an eligible Mythic Ula’tek kill also satisfies the AotC difficulty requirement while the achievement is active.
Do You Need to Kill the First Seven Bosses?
No. The achievement criterion is tied to Ula’tek, not an 8/8 Heroic clear.
However, a full Heroic clear can still be valuable for:
- additional Hero-track raid loot;
- tier-set opportunities;
- Great Vault raid progress;
- experience with mechanics that prepare your group for the final boss;
- other Venomous Abyss achievements.
If only the seasonal Heroic achievement is missing, the dedicated Ula’tek Heroic Kill is the relevant single-boss option rather than paying for an unnecessary full raid clear.
How to Earn Cutting Edge: Ula’tek
Cutting Edge: Ula’tek requires defeating Ula’tek on Mythic difficulty while the current raid tier is active.
Unlike AotC, Heroic does not qualify. The kill must occur under Mythic raid rules and your character must be part of the successful Ula’tek encounter.
Cutting Edge Requirements
- Defeat Ula’tek in The Venomous Abyss.
- Complete the encounter on Mythic difficulty.
- Finish the kill before the next raid tier removes the seasonal achievement.
- Your character must participate in the qualifying kill.
Does Cutting Edge Require 8/8 Mythic?
No. Cutting Edge itself requires the Mythic Ula’tek kill. It does not require your character to personally defeat all seven earlier bosses on Mythic during the same lockout.
This makes the achievement requirement different from a full Mythic progression clear. A guild or group with an existing Ula’tek lockout can focus directly on the final encounter.
Is Cutting Edge the Same as a Mythic Raid Clear?
No. A full Mythic 8/8 clear includes every boss in The Venomous Abyss. Cutting Edge is specifically the seasonal Feat of Strength attached to Mythic Ula’tek.
If you need only the achievement, use the dedicated Cutting Edge: Ula’tek service. If you need all eight Mythic bosses, multiple loot opportunities and full raid progression, a complete Venomous Abyss raid run is the more relevant objective.
AotC vs Cutting Edge: What Is the Difference?
| Requirement | Ahead of the Curve | Cutting Edge |
|---|---|---|
| Season 2 Achievement | Ahead of the Curve: Ula’tek | Cutting Edge: Ula’tek |
| Raid | The Venomous Abyss | The Venomous Abyss |
| Boss | Ula’tek | Ula’tek |
| Minimum Difficulty | Heroic | Mythic |
| Does Mythic Qualify? | Yes | Required |
| Does Normal Qualify? | No | No |
| Full 8/8 Clear Required? | No | No |
| Fixed Item-Level Requirement? | No | No |
| Time-Limited? | Yes | Yes |
| Difficulty | High | Very high |
There is no universal Blizzard-defined item-level requirement for either achievement. Individual raid leaders and guilds can impose their own minimum gear, logs, experience or class requirements, but those are group requirements rather than achievement criteria.
When Is the AotC and Cutting Edge Deadline?
There is currently no fixed calendar end date announced for Ahead of the Curve: Ula’tek or Cutting Edge: Ula’tek.
The controlling rule is that the achievements remain tied to the current raid tier. In practice, you should plan to complete them before the next raid tier releases.
Do not confuse the deadline with:
- the end of a weekly raid lockout;
- the end of a specific Mythic+ week;
- a minor Patch 12.1.x release;
- the date Story Mode opens;
- your personal saved raid lockout.
Once Blizzard announces the following raid tier, that official schedule becomes the important deadline reference. Do not plan a serious AotC or CE push for the final possible maintenance window because roster, progression or scheduling problems can eliminate the last available attempts.
What Rewards Does Ahead of the Curve: Ula’tek Give?
The guaranteed seasonal reward is the permanent Ahead of the Curve: Ula’tek Feat of Strength.
A Heroic Ula’tek kill also gives access to the normal rewards associated with defeating that boss on Heroic, including eligible Heroic loot and raid progression.
However, AotC itself should not be confused with:
- the Glory of the Venomous Raider meta achievement;
- Mythic Ula’tek rewards;
- Primeval Skyfriend;
- the Venom’s End title;
- Hall of Fame rewards.
Does AotC Give Primeval Skyfriend?
No. Primeval Skyfriend is associated with Mythic Ula’tek, not the Ahead of the Curve achievement.
A Heroic Ula’tek kill can earn AotC but does not make the Mythic-only mount available.
What Rewards Does Mythic Ula’tek Give?
A qualifying Mythic Ula’tek kill can provide several different rewards at the same time, but they come from separate achievement or loot conditions.
| Reward | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Cutting Edge: Ula’tek | Defeat Mythic Ula’tek while the seasonal achievement is active |
| Ahead of the Curve: Ula’tek | Mythic also satisfies the Heroic-or-higher AotC requirement while active |
| Venom’s End title | Mythic: Ula’tek achievement |
| Primeval Skyfriend | Mythic Ula’tek drop |
| Mythic Ula’tek loot | Eligible loot from the final boss |
| Famed Slayer of Ula’tek | Hall of Fame requirement for the first 200 qualifying guilds worldwide |
The important distinction is that Cutting Edge itself does not award Primeval Skyfriend or the Venom’s End title. The same Mythic boss kill can satisfy those separate conditions, which is why the rewards are often discussed together.
For the mount specifically, use our Primeval Skyfriend guide.
Primeval Skyfriend and Mythic Ula’tek
Primeval Skyfriend is the headline Mythic Ula’tek mount reward. Blizzard’s Season 2 raid information lists the mount as a Mythic Ula’tek drop.
Because it comes from the same final encounter required for Cutting Edge, a Mythic Ula’tek kill can simultaneously progress several goals:
- Cutting Edge;
- Ahead of the Curve, if not already earned;
- Mythic: Ula’tek;
- Venom’s End;
- Primeval Skyfriend eligibility;
- Mythic final-boss loot.
If the mount is your primary objective rather than the seasonal achievement, treat it as a Mythic Ula’tek reward objective, not an AotC or CE achievement reward.
How Difficult Is Ula’tek?
Ula’tek is the eighth and final encounter of The Venomous Abyss and uses a multi-stage fight built around venom management, add control, positioning, raid-wide damage and increasingly restrictive arena space.
Heroic introduces mechanics that require stronger assignment discipline and more consistent raid movement than Normal. Mythic adds additional encounter interactions and significantly increases the execution requirement.
For actual mechanics, ability priorities and role-specific positioning, use the dedicated Ula’tek boss guide. This AotC/CE article should remain focused on achievement requirements and progression rather than duplicating an entire boss strategy.
How to Prepare for Ahead of the Curve
AotC is much more accessible than Cutting Edge, but Heroic Ula’tek is still a current-tier final boss. Efficient preparation matters more than blindly increasing item level.
- Build a current Season 2 raid set. Prioritize tier bonuses, appropriate trinkets and upgraded weapons rather than only average item level.
- Learn Ula’tek specifically. If only AotC remains, studying seven bosses you already cleared provides less value than mastering the final encounter.
- Know your role assignment. Understand the mechanics that specifically target tanks, healers, melee and ranged players.
- Prepare consumables. Bring appropriate flasks, food, enchants and combat consumables.
- Use defensives proactively. Final-boss raid damage is generally easier to survive when defensive cooldowns are planned rather than used after health has already collapsed.
- Join a consistent group. Repeated attempts with the same players are usually more efficient than rebuilding a random group after every wipe.
How to Prepare for Cutting Edge
Cutting Edge requires a different level of preparation because the objective is not merely surviving a Heroic end boss. Mythic progression tests the consistency of the full raid group.
Character Preparation
- Complete your optimal Season 2 four-piece tier setup.
- Target strong trinkets and weapons from raid and Mythic+.
- Use current enchants, gems and consumables.
- Upgrade permanent items rather than spreading resources across temporary gear.
- Prepare alternative pieces if the Mythic strategy requires different survivability or secondary-stat choices.
Raid Preparation
- Define every mechanic assignment before the pull.
- Build raid cooldown rotations for predictable damage events.
- Review Warcraft Logs after progression sessions.
- Track repeated avoidable deaths separately from raw DPS problems.
- Maintain a stable Mythic roster.
- Practice the later stages rather than changing strategies after every wipe.
The final few percent of a Mythic end boss are often more about execution consistency than discovering a completely new strategy.
AotC or Cutting Edge: Which Should You Target?
| Your Goal | Best Target |
|---|---|
| Seasonal Heroic raid achievement | Ahead of the Curve |
| Heroic Ula’tek completion | Ahead of the Curve |
| Highest seasonal raid Feat of Strength | Cutting Edge |
| Venom’s End title | Mythic Ula’tek |
| Primeval Skyfriend | Mythic Ula’tek |
| Full Mythic raid progression | 8/8 Mythic clear |
| Hall of Fame title | Top-200 qualifying guild Mythic Ula’tek kill |
If your only objective is Ahead of the Curve, there is no reason to treat a full Mythic clear as a prerequisite. Conversely, if you want Primeval Skyfriend or Venom’s End, stopping after Heroic AotC will not complete those goals.
Common AotC and Cutting Edge Mistakes
- Trying to earn AotC on Normal difficulty.
- Assuming an 8/8 Heroic clear is mandatory for AotC.
- Assuming an 8/8 Mythic clear is mandatory for CE itself.
- Confusing Cutting Edge with the Venom’s End title.
- Claiming Primeval Skyfriend is the reward from the Cutting Edge achievement.
- Waiting for the final week of the tier before starting progression.
- Focusing only on item level while ignoring tier bonuses, trinkets and encounter execution.
- Joining Ula’tek without learning the final-boss mechanics.
- Buying a full raid clear when only the final-boss achievement is required.
- Assuming a saved lockout extends the achievement beyond the seasonal deadline.
AotC and Cutting Edge FAQ
What is AotC in WoW?
AotC means Ahead of the Curve. It is a time-limited achievement for defeating the current raid tier's required final boss on Heroic difficulty or higher.
What is Cutting Edge in WoW?
Cutting Edge is the corresponding Mythic seasonal raid achievement. In Midnight Season 2, it requires defeating Ula’tek on Mythic difficulty while the achievement remains available.
When does Ula’tek AotC become available?
The Venomous Abyss opens on August 18, 2026 in North America and August 19 in Europe. AotC and CE become obtainable once their required raid difficulties are available.
Do I need 8/8 Heroic for AotC?
No. The achievement requires Heroic-or-higher Ula’tek, not a complete Heroic clear.
Do I need 8/8 Mythic for Cutting Edge?
No. Cutting Edge specifically checks the Mythic Ula’tek kill. A full 8/8 Mythic clear is a separate progression objective.
Does Cutting Edge give Primeval Skyfriend?
Not directly. Primeval Skyfriend is a Mythic Ula’tek drop. Cutting Edge also requires Mythic Ula’tek, so both can come from the same successful encounter, but they are separate rewards.
Does Cutting Edge give the Venom’s End title?
The Venom’s End title is associated with the separate Mythic: Ula’tek achievement. The same Mythic kill can also award Cutting Edge while it is active.
Is there a confirmed AotC or CE end date?
Not yet. The relevant cutoff is the transition to the next raid tier. Blizzard’s future raid-release announcement should be treated as the final scheduling authority.
