Excavation Site: Wetlands is a new five-player World of Warcraft: Forever dungeon in the Wetlands. The dungeon became playable in the October 1 beta build when the level cap increased to 30, and Blizzard now lists its intended level range as 26-31. The instance takes players through an expanded Titan excavation above Whelgar's Excavation and includes Saltspine, Shadetooth, Highland Horror and Relic Guardian as its four current encounter records.
Short answer: enter through the new mountain path southeast of Whelgar's Excavation, bring a standard tank-healer-three-DPS group, stay out of the tall grass in Stalker's Thicket, use crowd control on Shadetooth's adds and keep ranged players outside Relic Guardian's Thunderclap range. Dungeon quests can be picked up from level 24, but the last encounter reaches level 31, so entering around level 26 or higher is much more practical.
Updated: October 6, 2026. This version replaces the old level-20-cap beta information with details from the playable Excavation Site beta build, including the current entrance, boss strategies, recorded loot and dungeon quest chains.
Excavation Site: Wetlands Location and How to Get There
Excavation Site is located in the southeastern Wetlands, above and southeast of Whelgar's Excavation. The new route climbs into terrain that was inaccessible in older Classic versions. A useful current route marker is around /way 47.8 56.3, with the dungeon approach and Meeting Stone farther up the mountain around /way 53.4 65.3.
| Faction | Route to the Dungeon | Practical Note |
|---|---|---|
| Alliance | Travel to the Wetlands through Menethil Harbor or come north from Loch Modan, then head southeast toward Whelgar's Excavation and follow the new road into the hills. | Alliance players normally have the easier trip because Menethil Harbor and Wetlands flight access place them relatively close to the dungeon. |
| Horde | Travel through Hillsbrad Foothills and Arathi Highlands, cross into the Wetlands and continue toward the new mountain path southeast of Whelgar's Excavation. | Pick up the Tarren Mill and Hammerfall flight paths if needed because the return trip is considerably longer for Horde characters. |
Full wipes are inconvenient because the Wetlands graveyard is far from the dungeon. If even one player with a resurrection spell survives, recovering inside the instance can save a long ghost run.
Excavation Site Level Range and Group Size
Blizzard's October 1 beta notes updated Excavation Site to levels 26-31. Dungeon-related quests can generally be accepted from level 24, but that does not mean a level-24 group is appropriately prepared for the entire clear. Relic Guardian is around the upper end of the bracket.
| Dungeon Detail | Current Information |
|---|---|
| Official Level Range | 26-31 |
| Quest Minimum Level | 24 for the current dungeon quest chains |
| Players | 5 |
| Zone | Wetlands |
| Location | Mountain area southeast of Whelgar's Excavation |
| Current Encounter Records | 4: Saltspine, Shadetooth, Highland Horror and Relic Guardian |
For a first clear, levels 26-30 with current gear are a more realistic target than entering immediately at 24. Lower-level characters can collect several quests early and return when their group is better prepared.
What Is Happening at the Excavation Site?
The dungeon expands the Wetlands archaeology storyline around Whelgar's Excavation and the Explorers' League. Strange mist, flashes of light and unstable Titan activity have appeared in the mountains above the existing dig site.
The excavation appears caught in an unusual time-related phenomenon, while Titan constructs and local wildlife have become hostile. The dungeon combines marshland, raptor-filled vegetation, archaeological camps and Titan ruins rather than functioning as a simple underground cave.
The new instance therefore uses an established Classic location as the entrance to completely new Forever content while keeping the dwarven archaeology and Titan themes associated with the region.

The playable dungeon now confirms the four previously datamined area names. The route moves through marsh, dense raptor territory, excavation camps and Titan structures, with several optional quest objectives placed along the way.
| Area | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Lost Marsh | Wetland section containing crocolisks and the Saltspine encounter. |
| Stalker's Thicket | Raptor-heavy area around Shadetooth. Tall grass can spawn Thicket Lurkers, making careless movement dangerous. |
| Site of the Guardian | Titan-themed section associated with the final approach and Relic Guardian. |
| Lost Dig Site | Excavation and camp area containing additional enemies and dungeon quest objectives. |
The most dangerous trash mechanic is the tall grass around Stalker's Thicket. Thicket Lurkers can appear when players move through the vegetation, and low-health Thicket Matriarchs can call additional Lurkers. Stay on the visible path and fight existing packs in open ground before moving farther into the grass.
Excavation Site Bosses
The Global beta client contains four encounter records: Saltspine, Shadetooth, Highland Horror and Relic Guardian. Current playable guides treat Saltspine, Shadetooth and Relic Guardian as the three main progression boss fights, while Highland Horror functions as a separate registered encounter and Alliance quest target between Shadetooth and the final area.
| Encounter | Key Mechanics | Current Loot Status |
|---|---|---|
| Saltspine | Tendon Rip slows the tank; Dust Storm reduces hit chance for players within 10 yards. | Three recorded armor drops. |
| Shadetooth | Two Thicket Hunter adds, tank-healing reduction, Rend, five-second AoE Fear and Enrage at 30% health. | Armor, caster off-hand and Greenhouse profession blueprint recorded. |
| Highland Horror | No reliable repeatable ability set has been documented yet from current public runs. | Horrible Rootcore for the Alliance dungeon quest; no normal boss gear table currently established. |
| Relic Guardian | Thunderclap around melee range, tank knockbacks, tank stun and high sustained tank damage. | Mail shoulders, gun, MP5 ring, Titan Relic and Rock Garden blueprint recorded. |
Because Forever remains in beta, tuning and drop rates can still change. The strategies below reflect the playable October build rather than the older pre-access datamined version.
Saltspine
Clear nearby enemies before pulling Saltspine. Tendon Rip applies a heavy movement slow to the tank, while Dust Storm affects targets within roughly 10 yards and reduces their chance to hit by 25%. Ranged DPS and healers should remain outside that radius whenever possible.
Loot: current recorded drops are Glinteye Slippers, Supple Bellyskin Leggings and Saltscale Girdle. The fight is mechanically simple compared with Shadetooth, so unnecessary nearby trash is the main avoidable risk.
Shadetooth
Shadetooth is the most dangerous normal boss for an unprepared group. He begins with two Thicket Hunters. Their Infected Wound reduces healing received by the current target, so dispel it when possible. Either crowd-control the adds or kill them before committing fully to Shadetooth.
Shadetooth uses heavy tank damage, a five-second area Fear and an Enrage at 30% health. Clear the nearby crocolisk area and hidden raptors before the pull so Fear does not send players into additional enemies. Current recorded loot includes Raptorclaw Greaves, Raptor's Gaze, Garb of Florid Feathers and Blueprint: Greenhouse.
Highland Horror
Highland Horror is registered by the client as the third dungeon encounter and appears on the route after Shadetooth, but current public strategy guides do not yet document a distinct repeatable mechanic set comparable to the other main bosses.
Quest value: Alliance players with Horrors in the Highland need to kill Highland Horror and loot the Horrible Rootcore. Do not treat the lack of a normal boss gear table as a reason to skip it when someone in the group has that quest.
Relic Guardian
Relic Guardian is the final boss. It begins inactive and is started by interacting with the Archival Panel beside it. Thunderclap hits characters within about 10 yards, deals damage and heavily slows movement and attack speed, so healers and ranged DPS should remain outside melee range.
The tank also deals with repeated knockbacks and occasional long stuns. Relic Guardian can currently be stunned and slowed, so coordinated crowd control can reduce incoming tank pressure. Current recorded loot includes Reliquary Mantle, Golemsight Long Gun, Ring of Power Regulation, the Titan Relic quest item and Blueprint: Rock Garden.
Excavation Site Confirmed Loot
The playable beta has now provided real boss-specific drops, replacing the empty pre-access loot section. The core equipment drops are item level 31 from the earlier encounters and item level 33 from Relic Guardian, with required levels generally in the 26-28 range.
| Encounter | Current Recorded Drops |
|---|---|
| Saltspine | Glinteye Slippers; Supple Bellyskin Leggings; Saltscale Girdle |
| Shadetooth | Raptorclaw Greaves; Raptor's Gaze; Garb of Florid Feathers; Blueprint: Greenhouse |
| Highland Horror | Horrible Rootcore quest item; no established normal boss gear table |
| Relic Guardian | Reliquary Mantle; Golemsight Long Gun; Ring of Power Regulation; Titan Relic; Blueprint: Rock Garden |
Beta drop percentages are still based on a relatively small sample and should not be treated as permanent launch rates. The item-to-boss assignments above are much more reliable than the early September lists because they now come from actual October beta runs and current database uploads.
Excavation Site Loot by Class
Strength-based mail users should pay particular attention to Saltscale Girdle and Raptorclaw Greaves. Agility or hybrid leather users can use Garb of Florid Feathers depending on their build, while Supple Bellyskin Leggings offer a Strength/Stamina leather option. Glinteye Slippers and Raptor's Gaze are the more obvious caster-oriented dungeon drops, with Raptor's Gaze providing Intellect and spell damage/healing.
Relic Guardian's Golemsight Long Gun is aimed at characters who use guns and Agility, Ring of Power Regulation is useful to mana users because of its mana-per-five effect, and Reliquary Mantle is a durable mail shoulder option. Quest rewards are also important: Horrors in the Highland and the Titan Relic chains offer weapon, caster and defensive choices that can be as valuable as the direct boss drops while leveling.
Excavation Site Quests
The old claim that no dungeon quests were known is no longer correct. Current beta data and completed runs confirm multiple Alliance and Horde quest chains. Several can be accepted from level 24, so collect them before traveling to the dungeon whenever possible.
Alliance: the main relevant chains include Songblade Search → Fallen in the Fen, Horrors in the Highland, Lost in the Thicket Things → Heartwoven, Highland Hides and the Titan Relic chain Lost Relic Carry → Prehistoric Prism. Some require earlier Wetlands quest chains, especially Horrors in the Highland. The Titan Relic drops from Relic Guardian and eventually leads to High Explorer Magellas in Ironforge.
Horde: Changing Tastes begins with Borstan in Orgrimmar; Dragonmaw Rumors leads into Open the Maw near the dungeon entrance; and Relic Guardian's Titan Relic starts Elder Knowledge → Earthen Echo, eventually taking the relic through Thunder Bluff to Muln Earthfury at Skywatcher Plateau. Quest databases may show different totals depending on whether breadcrumbs and follow-up turn-ins are counted, so plan around the actual chains rather than one headline number.
Recommended Group Composition and Minimum Gear
A standard one tank, one healer and three DPS composition remains the safest approach. There is no published minimum item level requirement, but the playable dungeon makes crowd control, dispels and reliable tank healing considerably more valuable than the old pre-test article could establish.
| Role | Practical Preparation |
|---|---|
| Tank | Use level-appropriate gear, keep defensive cooldowns available for Shadetooth and Relic Guardian and avoid pulling extra raptors through the tall grass. |
| Healer | Bring drinks, watch Infected Wound on Shadetooth's adds and stay outside Relic Guardian's Thunderclap range whenever possible. |
| DPS | Bring crowd control for the Thicket Hunters, focus dangerous adds cleanly and avoid dragging Fear or movement mechanics into uncleared trash. |
| Whole Group | Enter around the intended 26-31 bracket with repaired gear, food, drinks and normal leveling consumables; collect dungeon quests before the run. |
You do not need a special pre-Excavation gear set, but a level-24 group in weak quest gear will have a much harder time than characters closer to the intended range. Shadetooth's add control and Relic Guardian's sustained tank pressure are the best tests of whether the group is prepared.
Conclusion
Excavation Site: Wetlands is now a playable Forever beta dungeon rather than an inaccessible future instance. Blizzard's current range is 26-31, the entrance route is known, the four client encounters are visible in play, and players have documented real boss strategies, quest chains and loot.
The biggest practical changes from the old version of this guide are simple: the beta cap is now 30, the dungeon is open, the old 24-29 range has been replaced by Blizzard's current 26-31 listing, boss-specific loot is being recorded, and dungeon quests are available. Stay out of Stalker's Thicket's tall grass, control Shadetooth's adds, keep ranged players away from Relic Guardian's Thunderclap and pick up the faction quest chains before making the trip.
