WoW Forever Shadowfang Keep Guide: Quests, Loot, Bosses & Map

WoW Forever Shadowfang Keep Guide: Quests, Loot, Bosses & Map

Shadowfang Keep, usually shortened to SFK, is a five-player WoW Forever dungeon in southern Silverpine Forest. Wowhead currently recommends roughly levels 22–30, while other tested Forever guides use a broader 20–30 range. For a first complete quest run, level 23+ is a practical target.

SFK is unusually valuable because it combines Horde dungeon quests, Warlock and Paladin class objectives, a new Rogue solo quest, strong early gear, a rare spawn, profession blueprints and the Black Tome required for later City of Dalaran progression.

Quick answer: Horde players should collect The Book of Ur, Deathstalkers in Shadowfang and Arugal Must Die before travelling. Warlocks need the Large Soran'ruk Fragment, Paladins have class materials inside the keep, Rogues have a separate solo-only Horn of Xelthos objective, and every player interested in City of Dalaran should loot the Black Tome from Arugal's room.

Shadowfang Keep Location and Entrance

Shadowfang Keep stands above Pyrewood Village in southern Silverpine Forest. The instance entrance is approximately /way Silverpine Forest 44.7 67.8.

Horde Route

For Horde players, fly to The Sepulcher, pick up the local SFK quests, then follow the road south toward Pyrewood Village and turn west toward the keep.

Characters without the Silverpine flight path can reach Tirisfal Glades from Orgrimmar and travel south through Silverpine.

Alliance Route

Alliance has a much longer trip. A practical route is to reach Southshore in Hillsbrad Foothills and travel west into Silverpine Forest.

The dungeon itself is available to Alliance players, but the three standard SFK quests are Horde-only. Alliance characters usually come for class objectives, loot or progression rather than the ordinary Horde quest package.

Shadowfang Keep Map and Boss Order

SFK is a multi-floor castle with courtyards, narrow rooms, towers and several staircases. The route becomes much easier once you understand that the dungeon progresses upward through the keep rather than across one flat floor.

Horde Shadowfang Keep Quests

The Book of Ur

Pick up The Book of Ur from Keeper Bel'dugur in Undercity's Apothecarium.

The book is on a bookshelf in Fenrus the Devourer's room. Do not leave the room immediately after the boss without checking the shelves.

Reward choices:

Deathstalkers in Shadowfang

High Executor Hadrec at The Sepulcher asks you to find Deathstalker Vincent.

Vincent's corpse is encountered shortly after the first section of the dungeon. Speak to him to complete the dungeon objective.

The current reward is Ghostly Mantle.

Arugal Must Die

Dalar Dawnweaver at The Sepulcher sends you to kill Archmage Arugal, the final boss.

Loot Head of Arugal before leaving the final room.

The reward, Seal of Sylvanas, is one of the strongest guaranteed quest rewards associated with SFK.

Warlock Quest: The Orb of Soran'ruk

Warlocks can pick up The Orb of Soran'ruk from Doan Karhan in The Barrens.

The full quest requires:

  • 3 Soran'ruk Fragments from Twilight's Hammer enemies around Blackfathom Deeps;
  • 1 Large Soran'ruk Fragment from Shadowfang Darksouls in SFK.

The Shadowfang Darksouls appear after the early courtyard section. The fragment is a quest drop and may require killing several of them.

If you are completing the whole class quest efficiently, combine SFK with our WoW Forever Blackfathom Deeps Guide.

Paladin Class Objectives in SFK

The Test of Righteousness — Alliance Paladin

One of the required materials is Jordan's Smithing Hammer.

The hammer is in the stable area after Rethilgore. It does not require reaching the final boss.

The full Paladin chain also uses materials connected to The Deadmines, Blackfathom Deeps and Loch Modan, so SFK is only one part of the larger class quest.

A Moon-Kissed Blade — Horde Paladin

This new Forever Horde Paladin equivalent requires several materials. The SFK-specific piece is the Enchanted Silver Ingot.

The ingot is on a table beside Archmage Arugal, so unlike Jordan's Smithing Hammer this objective requires reaching the end of the dungeon.

The chain also sends the player toward The Deadmines and Blackfathom Deeps for its other materials.

Rogue Solo Quest: The Horn of Xelthos

Rogues have an additional Forever-specific SFK objective that is not counted among the six normal group quest entries.

The Horn of Xelthos is designed to be completed solo.

The basic SFK sequence is:

  1. Reach the courtyard.
  2. Pickpocket the two specific targets for the two half-keys.
  3. Combine them into the Twin Key.
  4. Return to the stables.
  5. Open the Ornamented Chest.
  6. Loot The Horn of Xelthos.
  7. Return it to the Dead Drop near Pyrewood Village.

Do not plan to combine this objective with a normal five-player clear: the quest specifically requires the Rogue to complete the job alone.

Black Tome and City of Dalaran

WoW Forever adds an important progression item to Arugal's room: the Black Tome.

Take the Black Tome to Ambermill and link it to the ley-line focus to create the Tome of Dalaran. That tome is required for the additional Lyn the Ignored encounter in the WoW Forever City of Dalaran dungeon.

Do not leave Arugal's room without checking for the Black Tome. It is easy to overlook because it is not ordinary boss gear, but it connects SFK directly to later Forever dungeon progression.

Recommended Full-Clear Route

  1. Collect the three Horde quests if applicable.
  2. Warlocks prepare The Orb of Soran'ruk; Paladins prepare their class chain.
  3. Enter SFK and clear carefully to Rethilgore.
  4. Kill Rethilgore and free the appropriate prisoner to open the courtyard.
  5. Complete the early class or Rogue objectives around the courtyard/stables if applicable.
  6. Kill the Fel Steeds / Shadow Charger encounter if your group wants the loot.
  7. Kill Razorclaw the Butcher.
  8. Continue to Baron Silverlaine.
  9. Kill Commander Springvale and control his adds.
  10. Kill Odo the Blindwatcher.
  11. Check the corridor for rare Deathsworn Captain.
  12. Kill Fenrus the Devourer and loot The Book of Ur from the room.
  13. Kill Wolf Master Nandos.
  14. Kill Archmage Arugal.
  15. Loot Head of Arugal if needed.
  16. Horde Paladins collect the Enchanted Silver Ingot.
  17. Every player who needs later City of Dalaran progression checks the Black Tome.

Rethilgore Strategy and Loot

Clear the nearby enemies before committing to the boss. Rethilgore's main ability is Soul Drain, while a remaining Bleak Worg can create unnecessary pressure if left uncontrolled.

Rethilgore Loot

Fel Steed and Shadow Charger

Attacking one horse pulls all three. Their combined melee damage can overwhelm a low-level tank.

Use Polymorph or another crowd-control effect on one horse and, if necessary, use a pet or off-tank on the second while the group kills them one at a time.

Steed Loot

Razorclaw the Butcher Strategy and Loot

Clear the room and nearby patrols before engaging. Razorclaw's main mechanic is Butcher Drain, but the fight is otherwise straightforward.

Razorclaw Loot

Baron Silverlaine Strategy and Loot

Veil of Shadow reduces healing received by 75%. Remove the curse if your group can decurse; otherwise the healer needs to compensate for the reduced healing.

Baron Silverlaine Loot

Commander Springvale Strategy and Loot

Springvale pulls with a Haunted Servitor and a Wailing Guardsman. Kill or control the adds first, especially the Guardsman because its AoE silence can shut down the healer.

Interrupt Holy Light whenever possible and be ready for Hammer of Justice.

Commander Springvale Loot

Odo the Blindwatcher Strategy and Loot

Odo pulls with two Vile Bats. The bats can Disarm and Cleave, so face them away from the party and kill or crowd-control them before focusing Odo.

Odo Loot

Deathsworn Captain Rare

Deathsworn Captain can spawn in the corridor after Odo. He uses Cleave and Hamstring and can be especially dangerous if nearby Wailing Guardsmen silence the group.

Deathsworn Captain Loot

Fenrus the Devourer Strategy and Loot

Fenrus is primarily a tank-pressure fight built around Toxic Saliva. Keep the tank stable and be ready for additional pressure around the encounter area.

Fenrus Loot

Wolf Master Nandos Strategy and Loot

Clear the four worgs around Nandos before pulling him. During the fight he summons additional worgs, which should be killed quickly before the group returns to the boss.

Nandos Loot

Archmage Arugal Strategy and Loot

Arugal is the hardest boss in the dungeon. Void Bolt deals heavy damage, while Shadow Port makes him teleport around the room.

Ranged players can remain on the entrance platform and continue attacking from there. Melee should avoid chasing Arugal blindly around corners and breaking line of sight with the healer.

Use walls and corners to line-of-sight dangerous casts when necessary.

Notable Shadowfang Keep Trash Drops

SFK is famous for rare BoE drops that can remain valuable even after the character outlevels the dungeon:

  • Gloomshroud Armor;
  • Mindthrust Bracers;
  • Face Smasher;
  • Necrology Robes;
  • Duskbringer;
  • Guillotine Axe;
  • Black Malice;
  • Shadowfang;
  • Assassin's Blade;
  • Night Reaver;
  • Witching Stave.

Best SFK Loot by Role

Caster DPS: Robes of Arugal, Belt of Arugal, Odo's Ley Staff, Sorcerer Collar and several rare BoE caster pieces are strong targets.

Healers: Odo's Ley Staff, Baron's Scepter and relevant quest rewards are worth comparing.

Physical melee: Meteor Shard, Blade of Silverlaine, Butcher's Slicer, Butcher's Cleaver and Haunting Blade are strong weapon targets.

Tanks: Commander's Crest, Phantom Armor and defensive stat pieces from Silverlaine or Springvale are useful targets.

Leatherworking: Blueprint: Tanning Rack from Razorclaw is a unique Forever-specific profession target and requires 140 Leatherworking to learn.

Important SFK Trash

Shadowfang Moonwalker

Anti-Magic Shield makes the mob immune to magic for about 10 seconds. Groups with only caster damage can slow down badly here, so at least one reliable physical DPS source is useful.

Wailing Guardsman

Screams of the Past silences nearby players. Healers and casters should stay more than a few yards away whenever possible.

Shadowfang Darksoul

Warlocks need these enemies for the Large Soran'ruk Fragment. Do not skip them when a Warlock has The Orb of Soran'ruk active.

Recommended Group and Preparation

A normal setup of one tank, one healer and three DPS works well.

  • Bring at least one reliable interrupt for Springvale and Arugal.
  • Curse removal is extremely useful against Baron Silverlaine.
  • Bring crowd control for the horses, boss adds and bats.
  • Physical damage helps against Shadowfang Moonwalkers.
  • Leave bag space for quest items, class items and the Black Tome.
  • Horde should collect the three normal quests before travelling south from The Sepulcher.

Shadowfang Keep Mistakes to Avoid

  • Horde entering without the three standard quests.
  • Warlocks skipping Shadowfang Darksouls.
  • Paladins forgetting their SFK-specific class material.
  • Pulling all Fel Steeds without crowd control.
  • Ignoring Baron Silverlaine's healing-reduction curse.
  • Leaving Springvale's Holy Light uninterrupted.
  • Letting the healer stand inside Wailing Guardsman silence range.
  • Skipping the Deathsworn Captain corridor check.
  • Leaving Fenrus' room without The Book of Ur.
  • Leaving Arugal's room without Head of Arugal, the Paladin material or Black Tome.

Shadowfang Keep in WoW Forever Leveling

SFK fits naturally after Wailing Caverns and before Blackfathom Deeps or the mid-20s dungeon group.

For Horde characters, a practical path is Ragefire Chasm → Wailing Caverns → Shadowfang Keep → Blackfathom Deeps, depending on available quests and travel time.

For a broader route, see our WoW Forever Horde Leveling Guide.

Is Shadowfang Keep Worth Repeating?

Yes, more than many early dungeons. Besides strong boss gear, SFK has valuable rare BoE weapons, Blueprint: Tanning Rack, Blueprint: Toxin Study, the Deathsworn Captain rare and several class objectives.

Repeated runs make the most sense when targeting a specific weapon, profession blueprint or rare BoE. Once those items stop being upgrades or useful trade targets, continue normal leveling.

WoW Forever Shadowfang Keep Runs

Players who want organized dungeon runs for Arugal, quest objectives, boss kills or repeated gear attempts can use our WoW Forever Dungeon Boosts category.

Class quests, the Rogue solo objective and external prerequisites may require preparation outside a normal group run. Random rare spawns and random loot cannot be guaranteed from one clear.
