Midnight Season 2 changes the answer to “what is the best class?” more than a normal tuning patch. Patch 12.1 reshapes several damage profiles, gives every specialization a new Venomous Abyss tier set, changes tank and healer balance, and launches a new Mythic+ pool on August 18, 2026 in North America and August 19 in Europe. The result is a meta where the best class is not always the class with the single highest-DPS specialization.

This ranking is built for players choosing a main or serious alt for raid and Mythic+. It uses the latest major Blizzard PTR tuning pass from July 31, our separate Season 2 DPS and tank evaluations, current healer testing, class utility, role flexibility and the value of each class across more than one encounter type. It is deliberately different from a pure DPS chart.

Quick answer: Death Knight, Paladin and Mage are the safest overall Season 2 class investments right now.

  • Death Knight has an elite raid DPS option in Frost, an elite Mythic+ DPS option in Unholy, and a strong Blood tank.
  • Paladin can cover all three roles, with Protection projected at the top of Mythic+ and Holy among the strongest dungeon healers.
  • Mage is the strongest pure-DPS class investment because Arcane projects extremely well in both raid and keys while Fire and Frost provide alternate damage profiles.

WoW Midnight Season 2 Tier List: Best Classes Overall

TierClassesWhy they rank here
SDeath Knight, Paladin, MageMultiple high-end Season 2 specs, strong raid/M+ overlap and low reroll risk if one spec is tuned down.
A+Demon Hunter, Druid, Warrior, ShamanExcellent role or spec coverage with important group utility; each has at least one top-end Season 2 use case.
AWarlock, Rogue, Priest, HunterStrong specialists with valuable raid or dungeon niches, but less total role flexibility or a narrower current meta profile.
B+Monk, EvokerFully viable and capable of high-end play, but current strength is more spec-, composition- or encounter-dependent.

B+ is not a “bad class” tier. Every class can clear Heroic and Mythic raid content and complete +10 keys. This table answers a different question: if you are investing in one class for the whole season, how many strong options does that class give you when content, tuning or group needs change?

Best Midnight Season 2 Classes by Goal

Best overall PvE classDeath KnightFrost projects at the top of raid, Unholy at the top of Mythic+, and Blood remains strong in both tank formats.

Best pure DPS classMageArcane is a top Season 2 projection in both formats, with Fire/Frost giving alternative profiles.
Best Raid DPSFrost Death Knight / Arcane MageStrongest current raid-first projections before live logs.
Best Mythic+ DPSUnholy Death KnightExcellent current key profile after late PTR redistribution of its damage.
Best Raid TankProtection WarriorPredictable mitigation, strong physical coverage, Rallying Cry and late damage buffs.
Best Mythic+ TankVengeance DH / Protection PaladinVengeance leads in layered control and mobility; Paladin in support, interrupts and dispels.
Best Mythic+ HealerHoly Paladin / Restoration ShamanCurrent PTR testing favors their throughput-plus-utility packages.
Best current Raid Healer projectionPreservation EvokerHigh throughput ceiling; Holy Paladin is the clearest late-PTR riser after repeated buffs.
Most flexible classDruidTank, healer, melee DPS and ranged DPS on one character.
Best beginner DPSBeast Mastery Hunter / Retribution PaladinStrong practical uptime and straightforward value in real groups.

The role-specific rankings are intentionally kept separate. A Protection Warrior being S tier in raid does not make Warrior “better DPS” than Mage; it means Warrior has a high-value tank option. The dedicated Season 2 DPS, Tank and Healer rankings below provide the spec-level detail without forcing unrelated roles into one table.

Why This Page Ranks Classes Instead of Mixing Every Spec

A single 39-spec table is useful when you only care about one role. It is less useful when you are deciding where to spend weeks of gearing, tier-set progress and raid lockouts. A class-level ranking should answer four questions:

  • How strong is the class’s best spec in raid?
  • How strong is its best spec in Mythic+?
  • Can the class swap role or damage profile without starting a new character?
  • Does its utility remain valuable when raw tuning changes?

That is why Paladin ranks above several classes with an individual DPS spec that may parse higher. A Paladin can move between Protection, Holy and Retribution while retaining the same character progression. Mage ranks highly for the opposite reason: it cannot change role, but all three specs compete for the same ranged-DPS slot and Arcane currently gives the class an elite cross-content anchor.

S Tier Classes

Death Knight — Best Overall PvE Investment

Death Knight has the cleanest Season 2 class-level case. Frost is one of our strongest raid DPS projections, Unholy leads our Mythic+ DPS ranking, and Blood moved upward after Blizzard’s July 21 defensive and core-ability pass.

The class also brings utility that remains useful even when damage rankings move. Anti-Magic Zone can reduce raid-wide magic pressure, while Death Grip and Gorefiend’s Grasp can completely change add positioning and Mythic+ pulls. Death Knight’s main drawback is mobility: excellent encounter planning matters more here than on Demon Hunter or Monk.

Best Season 2 uses: Frost for raid-first DPS, Unholy for Mythic+, Blood for tanking and grip-heavy dungeon routes.

Paladin — Best Class if You Want One Main

Paladin is the safest recommendation for players who dislike rerolling. Protection projects in the top Mythic+ group, Holy is among the strongest current dungeon-healer candidates after repeated PTR buffs, and Retribution remains a practical melee choice with strong defensive and support tools.

Devotion Aura, blessings, immunities, dispels, off-healing and multiple interrupts give the class value that does not disappear when a damage coefficient changes by five percent. The cost is that Paladin strength is distributed across roles; players interested only in ranged DPS should obviously look elsewhere.

Best Season 2 uses: Protection for keys, Holy for healing, Retribution for a forgiving melee DPS main.

Mage — Best Pure DPS Class

Mage is the best pure-DPS investment because Arcane currently projects as one of the strongest raid and Mythic+ options at the same time. Fire received another 6% global buff in the July 31 pass, while Frost remains a viable alternative with a different damage profile even after set and two-target adjustments.

The class also brings Arcane Intellect, Time Warp, strong personal defensives and excellent movement tools. The obvious limitation is role lock: if all three Mage specs are poorly suited to one encounter, you cannot swap to healer or tank.

Best Season 2 use: Arcane as the default main, with Fire/Frost available when tuning or encounter design favors another profile.

A+ Tier Classes

Demon Hunter

Demon Hunter is one of the best two-role classes. Vengeance sits at the top of our projected Mythic+ tank ranking, Havoc received meaningful late PTR buffs, and Devourer remains a relevant third DPS profile. Chaos Brand gives every magic-heavy group a reason to care about having a Demon Hunter even before personal output is considered.

The class misses S only because its raid-tank value is more encounter-dependent and the DPS picture is less dominant than Death Knight or Mage.

Druid

Druid is the best class for players who value role flexibility above everything else. Balance remains a strong Season 2 ranged option after its late spread-cleave pullback, Guardian improved substantially after the July 31 +8% damage buff, Restoration remains competitive, and Feral provides a melee route without changing characters.

Mark of the Wild adds 3% Versatility to the group, and Druid keeps battle resurrection, mobility and broad utility across all four roles. The class ranks A+ rather than S because not every individual Druid spec currently projects at the top of its role.

Warrior

Warrior’s class value rises sharply because Protection is our safest raid tank and remains strong in Mythic+. Arms is a solid DPS option despite July 31 reductions to Execute and cleave, while Fury remains viable but currently projects lower than Arms in our Season 2 DPS view.

Battle Shout is a persistent roster advantage for physical-heavy compositions. Warrior’s weakness is role coverage: there is no healer or ranged-DPS fallback.

Shaman

Shaman is one of the easiest classes to underestimate in a broad ranking. Elemental has a strong Mythic+ projection, Restoration sits near the top of current Season 2 healer testing for keys, and Enhancement remains useful even if its projected DPS tier is lower than Elemental’s.

Bloodlust, Wind Shear, Purge, Tremor Totem, Poison Cleansing Totem and other situational tools make Shaman exceptionally good at solving dungeon mechanics. It falls just short of S because the raid DPS picture is less dominant than Mage or Death Knight.

A Tier Classes

Warlock

Warlock is an excellent raid class. Affliction, Demonology and Destruction all sit high in our current raid DPS projection, and Demonology received major core-cast buffs on July 31. Healthstones, Soulstone and Demonic Gateway are roster tools rather than parse padding.

The reason Warlock is A rather than S is not performance; it is breadth. You are investing in three ranged DPS specs and no second role. If your only goal is raid DPS, Warlock should be treated closer to A+.

Rogue

Assassination is one of the major July 31 winners with a 10% global damage buff and projects strongly in both raid and Mythic+. Outlaw remains a useful dungeon profile, while Subtlety also received +10% PvE damage late in the cycle but still needs the right damage pattern to justify a higher broad ranking.

Rogue has outstanding stops, control and survival, but it is another DPS-only class. Its Season 2 class value depends on at least one of the three specs staying near the top of the melee field.

Priest

Shadow is a high-value DPS spec in both of our current Season 2 role rankings even after July 31 reductions to its spread-cleave package. Discipline gives the class a second role with a distinct damage-to-healing model, while Holy received another 5% healing buff in the latest major pass.

Power Word: Fortitude, Power Infusion, Mass Dispel and strong priest-specific utility keep the class relevant. Priest misses A+ because its healer projections are currently less uniformly dominant than Paladin or Shaman in Mythic+.

Hunter

Hunter remains one of the safest practical choices for players who value uptime, ranged mobility and a low-friction learning curve. Marksmanship received a late nerf after earlier tuning pushed it too high, Beast Mastery lost Cobra Shot damage, and Survival remains a useful melee alternative.

Hunter is particularly good for pugs and players learning new encounters, but it offers less class-wide roster leverage than the S/A+ classes and cannot change role.

B+ Tier Classes

Monk

Monk has strong tools but an uneven current spread. Mistweaver is one of the better Mythic+ healer options, Brewmaster remains fully capable but sits below our current top dungeon tanks, and Windwalker is viable without projecting as a Season 2 anchor DPS.

Mystic Touch, Ring of Peace, Leg Sweep and excellent movement remain genuinely valuable. A single tuning pass to Brewmaster or Windwalker could move Monk upward quickly, which is why B+ should be read as “less secure class investment,” not “weak.”

Evoker

Evoker is the hardest class to grade with one letter. Devastation received extremely large July 31 buffs after an overpowered tier-set interaction was corrected. Preservation has an excellent raid-throughput ceiling, while Augmentation’s value is inherently composition-dependent and can move without its own DPS changing.

That volatility is the reason for B+. In a coordinated raid that exploits Preservation or Augmentation correctly, Evoker can be far more valuable than the overall class tier suggests.

The broad class page should not duplicate a full 25+ spec DPS article. These tables show the current leaders; the detailed reasoning lives in the dedicated DPS guide.

Midnight Season 2 Healer Snapshot

Healer rankings carry more uncertainty than our current DPS and tank tables because the public Season 2 raid sample is still thinner and healer value changes dramatically with damage patterns. For Mythic+, however, progressive PTR testing currently favors Holy Paladin and Restoration Shaman, with Mistweaver Monk close behind. Blizzard then gave Holy Paladin another +5% all-healing buff on July 31.

We will keep the broad class hub conservative rather than inventing false precision. Use the Season 2 Healer Tier List for the role-specific update.

How July 31 Tuning Changed the Meta

The July 31 pass is why older Season 2 lists should not be copied directly. Several early PTR winners were pulled back, while multiple weak single-target or tank-damage profiles were raised.

  • Havoc Demon Hunter gained 6% on core rotational attacks, 12% on The Hunt and stronger Essence Break damage.
  • Guardian Druid gained 8% total damage.
  • Protection Warrior gained 6% total damage.
  • Assassination Rogue gained 10% total damage.
  • Subtlety Rogue gained 10% PvE damage.
  • Fire Mage gained another 6% total damage.
  • Arcane Mage gained 20% Arcane Blast damage plus a much stronger Splintering Orbs interaction.
  • Demonology Warlock received major Shadow Bolt, Demonbolt and Gloomhound increases.
  • Balance Druid, Marksmanship Hunter, Shadow Priest and parts of Arms Warrior were reduced after overperforming in specific damage profiles.

For the full spell-by-spell history, use the Midnight Season 2 Class Changes article instead of treating this broad tier list as patch notes.

Why Raid Utility Still Changes Tier Lists

Raid spots are not awarded by a damage meter alone. A class can be slightly behind on raw output and still improve the entire roster. Several class tools are particularly hard to replace:

ClassPersistent utilityWhy it matters
Death KnightAnti-Magic Zone, grips, combat resurrectionMagic raid damage and add positioning.
PaladinDevotion Aura, blessings, immunitiesRaid damage reduction and mechanic coverage.
MageArcane Intellect, Time WarpMandatory-style caster value and raid haste.
DruidMark of the Wild, battle resurrection3% Versatility and flexible recovery.
WarriorBattle Shout, Rallying CryPhysical damage and raid-wide defensive value.
ShamanBloodlust, Wind Shear, totemsHaste cooldown plus some of the game’s best situational utility.
WarlockHealthstones, Demonic Gateway, SoulstoneUnique raid movement and recovery tools.
PriestPower Word: Fortitude, Power Infusion, Mass DispelHealth, targeted offense and encounter-specific dispel value.

Why Mythic+ Favors Different Classes

The Season 2 pool — Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Ruby Life Pools, Kings’ Rest and Temple of Sethraliss — rewards frequent stops, dispels, movement, target control and durable self-sustain. That naturally raises classes such as Demon Hunter, Paladin, Shaman and Death Knight compared with a pure single-target raid ranking.

At +10 both Fortified and Tyrannical are active, and +12 replaces the weekly Bargain with Xal’atath’s Guile. That makes defensive consistency and death prevention increasingly important as key level rises. See the Season 2 Mythic+ Rotation Guide for timers and affix breakpoints.

Tier Sets Can Move a Spec Without Moving Its Class

Every specialization gets a new two-piece and four-piece set from The Venomous Abyss. Blizzard tuned several baseline abilities and set bonuses together, which means a naked-sim ranking can misrepresent the actual Season 2 character.

This matters most when choosing between specs inside the same class. Frost and Unholy Death Knight, for example, have different Season 2 damage profiles; Arcane, Fire and Frost Mage do not gain equal value from the same encounter pattern. The class remains a good investment because you can change spec without rebuilding the entire character.

For every bonus, Venom token source and Catalyst interaction, use the Season 2 Tier Set Guide.

Best Classes for Beginners and PUG Players

A high-end tier list and a good pug recommendation are not always the same thing. In uncoordinated groups, uptime, personal survival and low setup requirements can be worth more than theoretical ceiling.

SituationGood practical choicesReason
New ranged DPSBeast Mastery Hunter, Frost MageGood movement and relatively clear damage delivery.
New melee DPSRetribution PaladinStrong defensive tools, self-support and useful group buttons.
New tankGuardian Druid, Protection WarriorForgiving defensive baseline and readable mitigation loops.
First healerHoly Priest / Restoration ShamanReadable direct-healing toolkit; Shaman adds exceptional dungeon utility.
Pug-focused mainPaladin, Death Knight, DruidStrong self-sufficiency and the ability to change role or spec when group demand changes.

Best Class for Solo Play and Delves

Solo content rewards a different mix again: self-healing, pet or tankiness, burst without external support and the ability to recover from mistakes. Guardian Druid, Beast Mastery Hunter, Death Knight and several Demon Hunter builds are naturally comfortable here. A class that ranks lower for coordinated raid can still be excellent for Delves.

For an actual solo-only ranking rather than forcing Delves into a raid/M+ article, use the Midnight Solo & Delves Tier List.

What About PvP?

PvP should not be folded into the same S/A/B table. Patch 12.1 changes movement slows, crowd-control diminishing returns and multiple PvP-only coefficients. A spec can be average in raid and elite in Arena — or the reverse. The current broad PvE ranking therefore does not lower or raise a class because of PvP performance.

Use the Midnight PvP Class Tier List when Arena, Battlegrounds or rated PvP is your main goal.

How to Choose Your Main Without Chasing Every Hotfix

The safest Season 2 main is usually not the spec that is first by one percentage point today. Pick around the kind of flexibility you actually use:

If you want...Start with...
Maximum raid + M+ strength with tank accessDeath Knight
One character that can tank, heal and DPSPaladin
Three ranged DPS options and minimal reroll riskMage
All four roles on one characterDruid
High-key control and mobilityDemon Hunter
Raid tanking plus physical-group valueWarrior
Healer/DPS flexibility with exceptional dungeon utilityShaman
Raid-first ranged DPSWarlock or Mage

Before spending upgrade currency, compare the class choice with the Season 2 Gearing Guide. If you are choosing around the new raid specifically, the Venomous Abyss Raid Overview explains the eight-boss structure and reward curve.

Changing Main or Catching Up for Season 2

If you decide to reroll after testing Patch 12.1, avoid scattering progress across several half-geared characters. Level the class you actually want to play, secure the correct four-piece path and then target the content that provides your most valuable upgrades.

For players who want to speed up that process, ExpCarry has separate options for character progression, gear acquisition, Mythic+ keys and weekly Vault progress, and organized Venomous Abyss raid runs. Keeping these destinations separate is more useful than repeating the same commercial anchor after every class.

Midnight Season 2 Tier List FAQ

What is the best overall class in Midnight Season 2?

Death Knight has the strongest current cross-content argument because Frost projects extremely well in raid, Unholy in Mythic+, and Blood is a strong tank. Paladin is a better choice if role flexibility is your priority.

What is the best class if I only play DPS?

Mage is the safest pure-DPS class investment right now. Arcane is a top cross-content projection and Fire/Frost give you two alternative profiles without rerolling.

What is the best class for both raid and Mythic+?

Death Knight, Paladin and Mage are the strongest broad investments, but for different reasons. DK offers elite DPS plus tank access; Paladin covers all three roles; Mage offers three ranged DPS specs with Arcane currently leading.

Should I reroll because my class is B+?

No. B+ means the class has a narrower current meta case, not that it cannot clear content. For most players, familiarity and correct execution outweigh a small tier difference.

Will this ranking change after Season 2 launches?

Almost certainly at the spec level. Blizzard can hotfix classes, and live raid/Mythic+ data will expose damage profiles that PTR testing cannot fully reproduce. The class-level ranking should move less because it also rewards role coverage and utility.

Why is this different from the DPS Tier List?

The DPS page ranks damage specializations against other DPS. This page ranks the value of investing in an entire class across raid, Mythic+, multiple roles and tuning scenarios.

Sources and Update Policy

Last checked: August 9, 2026. Update the role snapshots after launch-week hotfixes, then replace PTR assumptions with representative Season 2 raid and Mythic+ data once enough live logs exist.
