Pre-release note: This guide is based on the current Patch 12.1 PTR and official pre-release information. Requirements, rewards and numerical values may change before launch.

World of Warcraft: Midnight Patch 12.1, titled Curse of Ula’tek, continues the campaign through Zul’Aman and the Coiled Isle. The story begins with the Legacy of the Amani chapter in Silvermoon and expands into several storylines involving Zul’jan, Zul’jarra, Atal’Utek and the serpent loa Ula’tek.

On the current test build, completing the first two campaign chapters is required to unlock the Coiled Isle. The campaign also introduces the setting for Patch 12.1’s outdoor activities, the Altar of Fangs dungeon, the Venomous Abyss raid, Lairs and three new Delves. The first chapter is already available before the full content update and awards the Dusk Grimlynx mount and Akiki battle pet.

Is Patch 12.1 Live?

As of July 17, 2026, Patch 12.1 is not live. Curse of Ula’tek is being tested on the Public Test Realm, while the first campaign chapter has already been released as part of the lead-in content. Blizzard has not published a final live release date for Patch 12.1.

The first chapter is therefore available to complete now, but the Coiled Isle, its full campaign continuation and Season 2 activities remain tied to the later content update. The exact live requirements should be checked again after Blizzard publishes the final release notes.

How to Start the Patch 12.1 Campaign

  1. Travel to central Silvermoon City.
  2. Look for the quest Hagar’s Invitation.
  3. Follow the opening storyline, Legacy of the Amani.
  4. Complete the chapter’s quests across Silvermoon, Zul’Aman and Atal’Utek.
  5. Return for the next campaign chapter when it becomes available.

The opening quest is associated with Hagar and can be found in the central area of Silvermoon City. If the quest is not immediately visible, check the Adventure Guide and confirm that the character has completed the relevant Midnight campaign prerequisites.

The campaign is designed for level 90 characters and is primarily quest content. It includes travel, conversations, investigation objectives, combat encounters and at least one dungeon-related objective in the current test version.

Patch 12.1 Campaign Chapters

The full Curse of Ula’tek campaign is split between the early lead-in story and the Patch 12.1 continuation. The current achievement and quest data identify the following storylines.

StorylineRole in the campaignAvailability
Legacy of the AmaniIntroduces the campaign and investigates the Amani’s historyAvailable as the early lead-in chapter
Ghosts of the PastContinues the investigation into the events surrounding Zul’jan and Atal’UtekScheduled for the Patch 12.1 campaign
The Battle for Atal’UtekAdvances the conflict around the island and its hidden threatScheduled for Patch 12.1
An Island of FangsMoves the story into the Coiled Isle settingScheduled for Patch 12.1
Original SinContinues the central Ula’tek storylineScheduled for Patch 12.1
The Call of the VoidAdditional campaign progression connected to the wider Midnight storyCurrent achievement data lists this separately from the main Coiled Isle storylines

The final chapter order, chapter labels and account-wide completion behavior remain subject to changes before launch. The current campaign achievement tracks progress across the Zul’Aman and Coiled Isle storylines.

Chapter 1: Legacy of the Amani

Legacy of the Amani is the opening storyline. It begins with Hagar’s Invitation in Silvermoon City and sends players back into the history of the Amani. The quests involve Zul’jarra, Zul’jan, Kinduru and other characters connected to the Amani storyline.

The chapter explores the consequences of Zul’jan’s actions and establishes why the characters must investigate Atal’Utek and the threat connected to Ula’tek. It also provides the first direct bridge between the previous Midnight story and the Curse of Ula’tek campaign.

The final quests take players through the conclusion of the Legacy of the Amani storyline. Completing the chapter awards the Akiki battle pet. The Dusk Grimlynx mount is awarded earlier in the quest chain.

Chapter 2: Ghosts of the Past

Ghosts of the Past is the next campaign storyline listed for Curse of Ula’tek. It continues the investigation into the history of Atal’Utek and the forces connected to the island.

On the current PTR, completing Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 unlocks access to the Coiled Isle. This makes the second chapter particularly important for players who want to enter the new zone as soon as Patch 12.1 becomes available.

The final live quest requirements and the exact point at which the zone opens have not yet been finalized. Players should nevertheless complete the first chapter and be prepared to continue directly into Ghosts of the Past.

Chapter 3: The Battle for Atal’Utek

The Battle for Atal’Utek advances the conflict from investigation into open confrontation. The storyline is tied to the deeper history of the island and the threat that the campaign has been building toward since the Zul’Aman quests.

This chapter is also part of the achievement progression for The Curse of Ula’tek. Its complete quest list and final reward presentation require confirmation from the live version.

Chapter 4: An Island of Fangs

An Island of Fangs is the campaign section most directly associated with the Coiled Isle. It takes place after players gain access to the new outdoor zone and helps introduce the island’s major characters, locations and activities.

The Coiled Isle is located off the east coast of Zul’Aman. Blizzard describes it as a corrupted ecosystem filled with poisonous waters and venomous enemies. The campaign explains what is hidden behind the island’s fog and why Zul’jarra is pursuing Zul’jan there.

Chapter 5: Original Sin

Original Sin continues the central Ula’tek narrative and is listed as one of the storylines required for The Curse of Ula’tek achievement. It deals with the consequences of the ancient events surrounding the island and the force that has been released there.

Do not confuse this campaign chapter with a reputation level, zone event or raid achievement. Original Sin is a quest storyline and contributes to the campaign’s overall completion progress.

Additional Story: The Call of the Void

The Call of the Void is listed separately in current achievement data and connects the Curse of Ula’tek campaign to the broader Midnight narrative. Its position in the final campaign structure may differ from the main Coiled Isle chapters.

Players interested only in unlocking the Coiled Isle should focus first on the required opening chapters. Players seeking the complete campaign achievement should complete every storyline listed in the final achievement criteria.

How to Unlock the Coiled Isle

The Coiled Isle unlocks through campaign progression rather than through a separate reputation requirement. On the current PTR, players must complete the opening two story chapters before the zone becomes available.

  1. Complete Legacy of the Amani.
  2. Continue into Ghosts of the Past.
  3. Finish the required campaign quests in the second chapter.
  4. Follow the resulting travel or introduction quest to the Coiled Isle.
  5. Use the zone as the starting point for Patch 12.1 outdoor progression.

The campaign unlock is important because the Coiled Isle contains more than story quests. Its activities include the Vaults of Atal’Utek, public events, Curse Surges, rare elites, Cursed Fishing and Captain Tokka’s local reputation. The zone is also connected to the new Delves, Lairs and the wider Season 2 content ecosystem.

The final live requirement may be adjusted, so the exact unlock quest should be verified again when Patch 12.1 launches.

What Opens After the Coiled Isle Unlock

ContentPurposeTiming
Vaults of Atal’UtekGroup content and rotating public events that build toward a boss encounterWith the Coiled Isle
Curse SurgesRotating events that spawn rare elites at locations around the islandWith the zone
Cursed FishingFishing activity unlocked through rare elites and Captain Tokka’s storylineThrough zone progression
Altar of CorrosionZone-specific talent tree with power and utility effectsWith Coiled Isle progression
The Ring of GloryNew DelvePatch 12.1
Gnarldor IsleNew DelvePatch 12.1
Venomfall DeepsNew Nemesis DelveSeason 2 content
Tidebound GrottoLair containing Nymrissa WavecallerPatch 12.1

The campaign itself is not a replacement for these specialist activities. It provides access to the zone and explains the story, while the individual systems supply their own progression, rewards and repeatable content.

Patch 12.1 Campaign Rewards

Dusk Grimlynx Mount

The Dusk Grimlynx is awarded during the opening Legacy of the Amani questline. It is a guaranteed campaign reward rather than a random drop, so players do not need to farm a rare enemy or complete a weekly activity to obtain it.

Akiki Battle Pet

Akiki is awarded for completing the first campaign chapter. The pet is tied to the completion of Legacy of the Amani rather than to a separate achievement or vendor reputation.

The Curse of Ula’tek Achievement

Completing the required campaign storylines awards progress toward the The Curse of Ula’tek achievement. The current criteria include Legacy of the Amani, Ghosts of the Past, The Battle for Atal’Utek, An Island of Fangs and Original Sin, with The Call of the Void listed in current campaign data as additional progression.

The achievement is a completion reward for the story and should not be confused with the separate Season 2 achievements tied to Mythic+, raiding or rated PvP.

Additional Campaign Rewards

Campaign quests also provide normal quest rewards such as experience, gold, equipment and story-related items. The final live version may add further cosmetic or progression rewards to later chapters, but those rewards should not be treated as confirmed until they appear in the final quest data or release notes.

How the Campaign Relates to Midnight Season 2

Midnight Season 2 begins one week after Patch 12.1 launches. The campaign and the season are related, but they do not open at exactly the same time.

The Coiled Isle and its introductory story are tied to Patch 12.1 access. Season 2 then adds the new raid, the Mythic+ rotation, the new PvP season, Bountiful Delves, new Prey content and the seasonal versions of other activities.

The new Venomous Abyss raid contains eight bosses and ends with Ula’tek. The three-boss Altar of Fangs dungeon is available up to Heroic difficulty when the content update opens and joins the Mythic+ rotation when Season 2 begins.

Players should therefore complete the campaign before the season starts if they want immediate access to the Coiled Isle and its connected activities. Campaign completion is not the same as raid attunement, Mythic+ qualification or PvP rating progression.

  1. Complete the current Midnight campaign prerequisites on your main character.
  2. Finish Legacy of the Amani to obtain the Dusk Grimlynx and Akiki.
  3. Complete the second campaign chapter when it becomes available.
  4. Confirm that the Coiled Isle is unlocked before Patch 12.1 content begins.
  5. Explore the zone and unlock its basic activities before focusing on repeatable farming.
  6. Begin the Altar of Corrosion progression when the system becomes available.
  7. Prepare separate goals for outdoor content, Delves, Mythic+, raiding and PvP.

A practical approach is to finish the story first, then unlock the zone systems one by one. This prevents the campaign, Captain Tokka’s reputation, Cursed Fishing and Altar of Corrosion progression from being treated as one combined currency or reputation track.

Common Campaign Mistakes

  • Stopping after Chapter 1: The first chapter provides the early rewards, but the current PTR requires additional campaign progress to unlock the Coiled Isle.
  • Confusing the campaign with Season 2: Completing the story does not automatically complete Mythic+, raid or PvP requirements.
  • Ignoring the Adventure Guide: The opening quest may be easier to locate through the Adventure Guide if Hagar’s Invitation is not visible in Silvermoon.
  • Expecting all rewards from the final achievement: The Dusk Grimlynx and Akiki are specifically associated with Chapter 1. Later campaign rewards require separate confirmation.
  • Farming before unlocking the zone: Coiled Isle activities are designed to become available through campaign and zone progression.
  • Treating zone systems as currencies: The Altar of Corrosion, Cursed Fishing, Captain Tokka’s reputation and Delver’s Journey are separate progression systems.

Update Changelog

  • July 17, 2026 — PTR verification: Updated the publication state, Coiled Isle unlock information, campaign chapter list and Chapter 1 rewards using the current Patch 12.1 test data and official Blizzard preview.
  • July 8, 2026 — Early campaign release: Added the Legacy of the Amani starting quest, Hagar’s Invitation, Dusk Grimlynx reward and Akiki reward.
