WoW Patch 12.1: The Curse of Ula’tek continues the Midnight campaign through Zul’Aman and the Coiled Isle. The campaign is now live and its requirements, chapter order and major unlocks are known. Players follow Zul’jarra, investigate the truth behind Ula’tek, reach the Coiled Isle, confront Zul’jan and Malacrass, and eventually unlock several of Patch 12.1’s major endgame systems.
This guide covers the current live Patch 12.1 campaign requirements, every major storyline, the correct quest order, how to unlock the Coiled Isle, World Quests, the Vaults of Atal’Utek and Altar of Corrosion, plus the separate Call of the Void storyline required for The Curse of Ula’tek achievement.

Is the Patch 12.1 Campaign Live?
Yes. The Curse of Ula’tek content update is live. Patch 12.1 released on August 11, 2026 in North America and August 12 in Europe.
Midnight Season 2 follows one week later:
- North America: August 18, 2026;
- Europe: August 19, 2026.
This distinction matters for the campaign because one of the later quests requires completion of The Venomous Abyss raid. Normal, Heroic, Mythic and Raid Finder Wing 1 become available with the Season 2 reset, while Story Mode becomes available the following week.
For the full seasonal rollout after completing the story, use our Midnight Season 2 weekly checklist.

Patch 12.1 Campaign Requirements
Before looking for the first Curse of Ula’tek quest, make sure the account satisfies the current live prerequisite.
Complete the Main Midnight Campaign on Your Account
Blizzard updated the requirement after Patch 12.1 launched. A player who has not already begun the Curse of Ula’tek campaign must first have completed the main Midnight campaign on at least one character on the account.
This is especially important for alts. Reaching level 90 alone does not guarantee that the Patch 12.1 campaign will appear if the account-wide campaign prerequisite has never been completed.
If the base story is still unfinished, complete it first. Players who only need specific remaining storylines can also choose the appropriate option in the WoW Midnight Campaign service rather than treating every Midnight campaign as the same quest chain.
Legacy of the Amani Is Part of the Achievement
Legacy of the Amani serves as the narrative prologue to the Patch 12.1 continuation and is also a required criterion for The Curse of Ula’tek achievement.
If you previously completed the Legacy of the Amani storyline, you do not need to start Patch 12.1 again from Hagar’s Invitation. The live Patch 12.1 continuation begins with Return to Amani’Zar.
How to Start the Patch 12.1 Campaign
There are two different starting points depending on your previous progress.
| Your Progress | Where to Start |
|---|---|
| Legacy of the Amani not completed | Start the Legacy of the Amani introductory storyline through the Adventure Guide / suggested campaign content and continue through its full quest chain. |
| Legacy of the Amani already completed | Continue Patch 12.1 with Return to Amani’Zar and meet Lady Liadrin in Amani’Zar Village. |
Do not confuse Hagar’s Invitation with the beginning of the live Patch 12.1 chapter. Hagar’s Invitation belongs to the earlier Legacy of the Amani storyline. Return to Amani’Zar is the start of the new Coiled Isle continuation.
The Curse of Ula’tek Storylines
The achievement currently requires six storyline criteria:
| Storyline | Role in the Campaign | Approx. Quest Chain |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy of the Amani | Prologue and background for Zul’jan, Zul’jarra and the Amani conflict | 17 quests |
| An Island of Fangs | Beginning of Patch 12.1 and access to the Coiled Isle | 17 quests |
| Ghosts of the Past | Reveals the suppressed history surrounding Ula’tek | 6 quests |
| Original Sin | Explains the origin and true nature of Ula’tek | 10 quests |
| The Battle for Atal’Utek | Dungeon, raid and major Coiled Isle system unlocks | 8 campaign steps |
| The Call of the Void | Separate Arator/Void storyline required for the achievement | 14 quests |
The achievement list does not display these criteria in narrative order. For the central Zul’jarra and Coiled Isle story, follow:
Legacy of the Amani → An Island of Fangs → Ghosts of the Past → Original Sin → The Battle for Atal’Utek.
The Call of the Void is a separate story branch but is still required if your goal is full completion of The Curse of Ula’tek achievement.
Legacy of the Amani
Legacy of the Amani establishes the events that lead directly into Patch 12.1. It follows the investigation into Zul’jan, Malacrass and the forgotten history of the Amani.
The storyline also contains several fixed collection rewards. Among its notable rewards are the Dusk Grimlynx mount during the early part of the chain and the Akiki battle pet near the end.
For a character that has already completed Legacy of the Amani, there is no reason to search Silvermoon for the old introduction again. Continue directly into the new storyline.
Chapter 1: An Island of Fangs
An Island of Fangs is the actual beginning of the live Patch 12.1 continuation. The first part takes place in Zul’Aman before the story crosses the fog surrounding the Coiled Isle.
The storyline consists of:
- Return to Amani’Zar
- A Call for Aid
- Saving Those Bound
- All Bark, All Bite
- Severing the Serpent’s Head
- To the Skybridge
- It Just Had to Be...
- Drumming Up the Troops
- Down With the Skies
- What Lies Beyond the Fog
- The Children of Ula’tek
- Situation Normal, All Snaked Up
- The Serpent’s Tail
- Them That Were Lost
- Fire, the Only Way to Be Sure
- Death of Furies
- Come With Me
How to Unlock the Coiled Isle
The important campaign breakpoint is What Lies Beyond the Fog. This quest sends you through the fog and onto the Coiled Isle.
You do not need to complete two full Patch 12.1 chapters before accessing the zone. That information came from earlier test versions and is no longer the correct live requirement.
After completing the island introduction, the Coiled Isle becomes much easier to access on other characters in your Warband. The island also provides its own flight-path access.
For rares, activities, Curse Surges, faction progression and zone priorities after arrival, use our dedicated Coiled Isle guide.
Chapter 2: Ghosts of the Past
Ghosts of the Past shifts the campaign away from the immediate invasion and toward the history that the Amani were taught about Ula’tek.
The full storyline is:
- Words to Hear
- The Glint of History
- Echoed Steps
- What Was Buried
- Lurking in the Dark
- Written by the Victors
This chapter is primarily a lore and investigation sequence, but it is not optional filler. Ghosts of the Past is a required criterion for The Curse of Ula’tek achievement.
The campaign begins revealing that the established version of Amani history is incomplete and connects Nek’zali, the ancient conflict and Ula’tek’s true origin.
Chapter 3: Original Sin
Original Sin continues immediately from the discoveries made in Ghosts of the Past and moves the campaign toward the direct awakening of Ula’tek.
- Delay the Venom
- Clear the Swamp
- Haunted Shore
- Site of Terror
- Broken Spears
- Awe of She
- Fuel the Calling
- Pushed to the Brink
- The Summoning of Ula’tek
- Awakened Evil
The Summoning of Ula’tek
The Summoning of Ula’tek is one of the major story breakpoints in the entire Patch 12.1 campaign. Instead of treating Ula’tek as a simple Amani superweapon, the chapter exposes why the creature was originally created and why releasing it threatens far more than the current conflict.
Completing Awakened Evil moves the campaign into the final Atal’Utek sequence.
Chapter 4: The Battle for Atal’Utek
The Battle for Atal’Utek is where the story starts directly unlocking the major repeatable systems of Patch 12.1. This chapter connects the Altar of Fangs dungeon, Coiled Isle World Quests, The Venomous Abyss raid, Vaults of Atal’Utek and Altar of Corrosion.
The full campaign sequence is:
- The Vaults of Atal’Utek: Altar of Fangs
- Nature of Her Wounds
- The Venomous Abyss
- Lor’themar’s Judgement
- Into the Vaults of Atal’Utek
- Vaults of Atal’Utek: One Coin Too Many
- Vaults of Atal’Utek: A Toxic Tour
- Vaults of Atal’Utek: The Altar of Corrosion
Altar of Fangs Campaign Quest
The first step sends you into the Altar of Fangs and requires you to confront Zul’jan.
Complete the objectives outside and at the entrance before entering the instance. The campaign supports a follower-dungeon route, so this story step does not require you to find a permanent five-player group.
If you want boss mechanics before entering, use our Altar of Fangs dungeon guide.
Nature of Her Wounds Unlocks Coiled Isle World Quests
After obtaining the Fang of Ula’tek, Nature of Her Wounds requires you to use it in an attempt to save Zul’jarra.
Completing this quest unlocks Coiled Isle World Quests. If you can access the island but do not see its World Quests, check whether Nature of Her Wounds has been completed.
The Venomous Abyss Campaign Step
The next major objective is The Venomous Abyss, which requires completion of the raid on an eligible difficulty.
| Region / Mode | Availability |
|---|---|
| North America — Normal, Heroic, Mythic, Raid Finder Wing 1 | August 18, 2026 |
| Europe — Normal, Heroic, Mythic, Raid Finder Wing 1 | August 19, 2026 |
| North America — Story Mode | August 25, 2026 |
| Europe — Story Mode | August 26, 2026 |
If your campaign currently stops at The Venomous Abyss before the appropriate regional unlock, the character is not missing an earlier hidden quest — the raid portion is part of the Season 2 release schedule.
For all eight bosses, release wings and raid progression, use our Venomous Abyss raid guide.
Into the Vaults of Atal’Utek
After the raid-related story sequence, the campaign moves deeper into the mountain and introduces the Vaults of Atal’Utek.
The Vaults are not just a campaign location. They are a repeatable Patch 12.1 activity hub built around Temple Patrols, Temple Strikes, Incursions, Ancient Foes, currencies and the progression systems connected to the Altar of Corrosion.
For the repeatable activity loop rather than campaign spoilers, use our Vaults of Atal’Utek guide.
One Coin Too Many and Corrosive Progression
Vaults of Atal’Utek: One Coin Too Many introduces Er’inye and the corruption system associated with Corrosive Coins.
This is an important prerequisite if you reach the Vaults but cannot interact with the later Altar progression. Do not assume simply entering the Vaults automatically unlocks every system inside them.
A Toxic Tour
A Toxic Tour teaches the repeatable Vaults activity cycle by requiring participation in the major event types:
- Temple Patrol;
- Temple Strike;
- Temple Incursion;
- Ancient Foe.
This quest is useful because it effectively acts as the campaign tutorial for the Vaults endgame loop.
The Altar of Corrosion
The final Vaults portion sends you to Er’inye and then the Altar of Corrosion. Completing the corresponding quest unlocks the Altar progression system.
Do not confuse unlocking the Altar with fully progressing it. After the campaign unlock, Corrosive Coins, Corrosive Souls and related activities become part of the repeatable endgame progression.
Use our Altar of Corrosion guide for the talent system, Corrosive Souls and optimal unlock order.
The Call of the Void Is Required for the Achievement
The live The Curse of Ula’tek achievement now includes The Call of the Void as a required sixth storyline.
This is easy to miss because it is not part of the central Zul’jarra → Coiled Isle progression. It follows a separate Void-related story involving Arator, Magister Umbric and events around Deatholme.
The storyline contains 14 quests:
- Echoes of the Darkwell
- What Hope in the Light?
- Resurgence in Deatholme
- The Direct Method
- They Always Write It Down
- My Poor Beautiful Self
- Under New Management
- A Comeback Story
- Verifiably Untrustworthy
- Null Space
- Carving Out Room
- A Dark Shadow Looms
- The Call of the Void
- Like Mother, Like Son
If you completed every Coiled Isle chapter but The Curse of Ula’tek achievement still does not complete, The Call of the Void is one of the first criteria to check.
For the wider Arator storyline and its context, use our Midnight Arator questline guide.
What Does the Patch 12.1 Campaign Unlock?
| Unlock | Campaign Requirement | What It Gives You |
|---|---|---|
| Coiled Isle | What Lies Beyond the Fog | Access to the Patch 12.1 outdoor zone and its introductory content |
| Coiled Isle World Quests | Nature of Her Wounds | Repeatable World Quest activity on the island |
| Vaults of Atal’Utek progression | Into the Vaults of Atal’Utek and its follow-up quests | Access to the main Vaults activity loop and introductory progression |
| Corrosive progression | One Coin Too Many | Introduces Er’inye, Corrosive Coins and the corruption system |
| Altar of Corrosion | The Altar of Corrosion | Unlocks the Altar progression system |
| The Curse of Ula’tek achievement | All six required storylines | Full Patch 12.1 story completion criterion |
Patch 12.1 Campaign Rewards
The campaign should be viewed primarily as an access and progression unlock, not simply a source of quest gear. Its highest-value rewards are the systems and activities it opens.
During the full story you can receive:
- quest equipment and gold;
- Zul’jarra’s Forces reputation and related progression;
- Voidlight Marl and other zone resources;
- the Dusk Grimlynx mount from the Legacy of the Amani sequence;
- the Akiki battle pet from the Legacy storyline;
- Coiled Isle access;
- Coiled Isle World Quests;
- Vaults of Atal’Utek access and progression;
- Corrosive Coin-related systems;
- Altar of Corrosion access;
- progress toward The Curse of Ula’tek achievement.
Campaign completion does not automatically max the new island faction or fully upgrade the Altar. Those are separate repeatable progression systems.
If Renown is your next objective after the story, see the Zul’jarra’s Forces Renown service or our broader Midnight Renown guide rather than repeatedly searching the campaign for missing ranks.
Best Order After Reaching the Coiled Isle
You do not need to stop the main story every time a new icon appears on the map. For the fastest account progression, use this order:
- Continue An Island of Fangs until the Coiled Isle introduction is complete.
- Finish Ghosts of the Past and Original Sin instead of being distracted by optional outdoor farming.
- Complete Altar of Fangs when The Battle for Atal’Utek sends you there.
- Finish Nature of Her Wounds to unlock Coiled Isle World Quests.
- Complete The Venomous Abyss step when the required raid mode is available.
- Finish the Vaults introduction through One Coin Too Many, A Toxic Tour and The Altar of Corrosion.
- Verify The Call of the Void if you want the complete Curse of Ula’tek achievement.
- Only then move into repeatable Vaults, Renown, Corrosive Coin and Season 2 farming.
This prevents a common inefficiency: spending hours farming systems before finishing the campaign quests that actually unlock their full functionality.
Patch 12.1 Campaign Not Appearing or Stuck
| Problem | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Return to Amani’Zar does not appear | Make sure the main Midnight campaign has been completed on at least one character on the account and verify Legacy of the Amani progress. |
| Cannot reach the Coiled Isle | Continue An Island of Fangs until What Lies Beyond the Fog. |
| Coiled Isle unlocked but no World Quests appear | Complete Nature of Her Wounds. |
| Altar of Fangs quest does not progress | Complete all entrance and NPC objectives before entering or queuing for the dungeon. |
| Campaign stops at The Venomous Abyss | Check the raid release schedule and complete the required raid step when an eligible mode is available. |
| Vaults accessible but Corrosive system missing | Continue Into the Vaults of Atal’Utek and One Coin Too Many. |
| Altar of Corrosion unavailable | Continue the Vaults campaign through The Altar of Corrosion quest. |
| All Coiled Isle chapters completed but achievement incomplete | Check The Call of the Void and Legacy of the Amani criteria. |
Patch 12.1 Campaign FAQ
Do I need to complete the Midnight campaign before Curse of Ula’tek?
Yes. The current live requirement is that the main Midnight campaign must have been completed by at least one character on your account before a character that has not already started Curse of Ula’tek can begin the Patch 12.1 campaign.
What quest unlocks the Coiled Isle?
What Lies Beyond the Fog sends you to the Coiled Isle during An Island of Fangs.
Do I need to finish two chapters to unlock the Coiled Isle?
No. That was based on earlier test information. On live servers, the important progression point is What Lies Beyond the Fog inside An Island of Fangs.
What unlocks Coiled Isle World Quests?
Nature of Her Wounds unlocks World Quests on the Coiled Isle.
Is Altar of Fangs required for the campaign?
Yes. The Battle for Atal’Utek begins with a campaign objective that requires completion of Altar of Fangs and confrontation with Zul’jan.
Is The Venomous Abyss required for the campaign?
Yes. The Battle for Atal’Utek contains a quest to complete The Venomous Abyss on an eligible difficulty. The raid opens with Midnight Season 2, while Story Mode becomes available the following week.
Is The Call of the Void optional?
It is separate from the central Coiled Isle quest chain, but it is not optional if you want The Curse of Ula’tek achievement. The current achievement requires all six storylines, including The Call of the Void.
Can I skip the story on alts?
The main Midnight campaign prerequisite is account-based, and completing the Coiled Isle introduction improves access for other Warband characters. However, do not assume that every quest criterion and reward is automatically completed on every alt. Check the specific storyline or unlock you need before skipping content.
