WoW Forever Best Professions for Every Class, Role & Playstyle

WoW Forever Best Professions for Every Class, Role & Playstyle

The best professions in World of Warcraft: Forever depend on your class, role and goal. A Warrior leveling a first character benefits from a very different profession pair than a Mage preparing for PvP or a Druid building an account-wide gold setup.

For most first characters, the strongest rule is simple: pair the crafting profession that supports your class with the gathering profession that supplies it. Warriors and Paladins naturally fit Blacksmithing + Mining, Hunters, Rogues, Shamans and Druids fit Leatherworking + Skinning, while Mages, Priests and Warlocks benefit heavily from Tailoring + Enchanting.

That rule changes as you approach level 60. Crafted leveling gear matters less once dungeon, raid, PvP and quest rewards take over, while Engineering utility, Alchemy consumables, Enchanting and the economy of rare recipes become increasingly important.

This guide recommends professions by class, leveling value, level-60 value, PvP utility, gold potential and self-sufficiency instead of pretending that one profession pair is universally best.

For a complete explanation of every profession, skill cap and pairing, see our WoW Forever Professions Guide.

If you only want one answer: use the Default Pair while leveling your first character. It gives the cleanest combination of gear, materials, profession progression and gold without depending heavily on the Auction House.

How We Choose the Best Profession for a Class

A profession is not ranked only by how many items it can craft. We use six practical factors:

  1. Gear compatibility: can the profession make useful armor, weapons or upgrades for the class?
  2. Material independence: can the second profession supply most of the first profession's materials?
  3. Leveling value: does the pair help while progressing from 1 to 60 rather than only at maximum level?
  4. Endgame utility: does it provide consumables, enchants, gadgets or specialized crafts that remain useful at 60?
  5. Economy: can excess materials or crafts be sold rather than becoming sunk costs?
  6. Forever systems: Camping, Merchant's Favor and Legacy change the value of professions compared with original Classic.

This produces a more useful answer than simply saying “Engineering is best at endgame” or “take whatever makes your armor.”

Best Professions for Warrior

See also our WoW Forever Warrior Guide.

Best Default: Mining + Blacksmithing

Mining + Blacksmithing is the strongest default profession combination for a Warrior.

Blacksmithing supports the Warrior throughout the leveling journey with:

  • Mail and later Plate armor;
  • one-handed and two-handed weapons;
  • sharpening and weighting items;
  • new Forever equipment families;
  • specialized high-level weapons and armor.

Mining supplies the ore, stone and gems needed by Blacksmithing, which keeps the pair much more self-sufficient than buying every material from the Auction House.

Best Warrior PvP Pair: Engineering + Mining

Engineering becomes much more attractive when PvP is the priority. Grenades, bombs, target dummies and specialized gadgets add tools that the Warrior class does not normally have.

Mining supplies both metal and stone, making Engineering considerably cheaper to maintain.

Best Warrior Raid Alternative: Alchemy + Herbalism

If another character already supplies crafted gear, Alchemy + Herbalism becomes an attractive raiding setup. Elixirs, flasks, utility consumables and transmutes can provide more recurring value than crafting another piece of leveling armor.

Warrior Recommendation

First character: Mining + Blacksmithing.
PvP-focused: Mining + Engineering.
Consumable-focused level 60 alt: Herbalism + Alchemy.

Best Professions for Paladin

See our WoW Forever Paladin Guide.

Best Default: Mining + Blacksmithing

Like Warriors, Paladins progress from Mail into Plate and have direct access to a large Blacksmithing gear pool.

This is especially attractive for Protection and Retribution because Blacksmithing can supply armor and weapons while Mining provides the required materials.

Best Holy Paladin Pair: Herbalism + Alchemy

Holy does not benefit from the same type of weapon and armor progression as aggressively as a melee-focused Paladin. At higher levels, Alchemy becomes more interesting through mana support, elixirs, flasks and other consumables.

Remember that standard Healing Potions are now part of First Aid in Forever, so do not choose Alchemy only because you expect it to be the Healing Potion profession.

Best Paladin PvP Pair: Engineering + Mining

Engineering gives Paladins additional ranged interaction, explosives and control tools that complement a class with strong defensive utility but more limited natural ranged pressure.

Paladin Recommendation

Protection / Retribution leveling: Mining + Blacksmithing.
Holy / raid support: Herbalism + Alchemy.
PvP: Mining + Engineering.

Best Professions for Hunter

See our WoW Forever Hunter Guide.

Best Default: Skinning + Leatherworking

Hunter has one of the cleanest profession loops in the game: you already kill beasts while leveling, so Skinning turns those kills into materials for Leatherworking.

Leatherworking supports Hunters with:

  • Leather during the early game;
  • Mail as the class progresses;
  • Armor Kits;
  • specialized crafted gear;
  • quivers and related utility where recipes apply.

Best Hunter Utility/PvP Alternative: Engineering + Mining

Engineering deserves special attention on Hunter because it can provide:

  • guns;
  • scopes;
  • explosives;
  • target dummies;
  • mobility and utility gadgets.

If your gear is supplied by dungeons, quests or another character, Engineering + Mining can be more interesting than maintaining Leatherworking indefinitely.

Hunter Recommendation

First character / leveling: Skinning + Leatherworking.
PvP / gadgets / ranged crafting: Mining + Engineering.
Pure farming: Skinning + Mining is viable if you intentionally give up a crafting profession.

Best Professions for Rogue

See our WoW Forever Rogue Guide.

Best Default: Skinning + Leatherworking

Rogues wear Leather throughout the entire leveling journey, making Leatherworking the most direct armor profession for the class.

Skinning is also easy to level while questing because many common leveling routes contain beasts that can be skinned after combat.

Best Rogue PvP Pair: Engineering + Mining

Engineering has exceptional synergy with Rogue PvP because it adds more options before, during and after an engagement:

  • grenades;
  • bombs;
  • target dummies;
  • specialized Engineering gadgets;
  • additional ranged utility.

Rogue already has a large control toolkit, so Engineering expands the number of situations where the class can force an advantage.

Rogue Recommendation

Leveling / self-sufficient gear: Skinning + Leatherworking.
Serious PvP: Mining + Engineering.
Gold gathering: Skinning + Mining if crafting progression is not a priority.

Best Professions for Priest

See our WoW Forever Priest Guide.

Best Default: Tailoring + Enchanting

Tailoring is the natural gear profession for a Priest because cloth is collected from humanoid enemies rather than requiring a dedicated gathering profession.

Enchanting fits extremely well beside it:

  1. Tailor gear while leveling.
  2. Wear useful upgrades.
  3. Disenchant obsolete crafted pieces.
  4. Use the materials to level Enchanting.
  5. Enchant your next upgrades.

Best Priest Raid Alternative: Herbalism + Alchemy

For a Priest whose gear is already supplied through group content, Alchemy + Herbalism offers a recurring consumable economy rather than more cloth equipment.

This is especially attractive for healers and players who raid frequently.

Priest Recommendation

Leveling / first character: Tailoring + Enchanting.
Raid consumables: Herbalism + Alchemy.
PvP specialist: Engineering becomes an option if you are willing to abandon the cloth-production loop.

Best Professions for Shaman

See our WoW Forever Shaman Guide.

Best Default: Skinning + Leatherworking

Shamans begin with Leather and later gain Mail, both of which fit Leatherworking extremely well.

This makes Skinning + Leatherworking the most universally useful first-character setup regardless of whether you eventually play Enhancement, Elemental or Restoration.

Best Restoration / Elemental Alternative: Herbalism + Alchemy

For caster and healer builds, Alchemy's recurring consumables can become more useful at higher levels than continuously producing armor.

Herbalism funds that progression and can also be monetized independently.

Best Enhancement / PvP Alternative: Engineering + Mining

Enhancement benefits more directly from Engineering's bombs, gadgets and extra combat utility.

Shaman Recommendation

First character: Skinning + Leatherworking.
Restoration / Elemental endgame: Herbalism + Alchemy.
Enhancement / PvP: Mining + Engineering.

Best Professions for Mage

See our WoW Forever Mage Guide.

Best Default: Tailoring + Enchanting

Tailoring creates cloth gear, bags and caster-focused equipment while Enchanting turns unwanted equipment into useful materials.

This is one of the cleanest two-crafting-profession combinations because Tailoring's main cloth resource comes directly from humanoid enemies.

Best Mage Level 60 Alternative: Herbalism + Alchemy

If crafted cloth is no longer providing regular upgrades, consumables may create more recurring value. Alchemy also fits a caster naturally through mana- and spell-oriented consumables.

Best Mage PvP Alternative: Engineering

Engineering adds another layer of control and utility on top of Mage's already extensive toolkit.

Gnome note: Gnomes have additional Forever Engineering synergy because their racial Engineering specialization reduces device failure or backfire chance.

Mage-Only Comprehension

Mages also gain Comprehension, a separate class tradeskill in Forever. It does not replace one of your two normal primary profession choices.

Mage Recommendation

Leveling: Tailoring + Enchanting.
Raid / consumables: Herbalism + Alchemy.
PvP: Engineering, commonly paired with Mining if you want to supply it yourself.

Best Professions for Warlock

See our WoW Forever Warlock Guide.

Best Default: Tailoring + Enchanting

Like Mage and Priest, Warlock gains direct leveling value from Tailoring while Enchanting makes use of obsolete cloth equipment.

Tailoring is particularly attractive because it can provide caster-oriented armor without requiring a gathering profession.

Best Warlock PvP Alternative: Engineering + Mining

Warlock already has strong control and attrition. Engineering adds immediate explosives, target dummies and specialist gadgets that create additional tactical options.

Best Warlock PvE Alternative: Herbalism + Alchemy

For repeated level-60 content, Alchemy provides a recurring consumable advantage rather than another one-time gear craft.

Warlock Recommendation

Leveling: Tailoring + Enchanting.
PvE consumables: Herbalism + Alchemy.
PvP: Engineering + Mining.

Best Professions for Druid

See our WoW Forever Druid Guide.

Best Default: Skinning + Leatherworking

Druids wear Leather and can play tank, melee DPS, ranged DPS or healer roles. Leatherworking therefore gives them one of the broadest usable crafted gear pools of any class.

Skinning supplies the materials naturally while questing.

Best Versatile Druid Alternative: Herbalism + Alchemy

Alchemy works across every Druid role because consumables are not tied to one armor set:

  • Feral can use offensive consumables;
  • Guardian-style tanking benefits from defensive preparation;
  • Balance benefits from caster-oriented consumables;
  • Restoration benefits from mana and healer preparation.

Tauren note: the Forever version of Cultivation can duplicate a nearby herb for harvesting. This makes herb-based profession strategies slightly more convenient for Tauren characters, although it does not make Herbalism mandatory.

Surprising Druid Option: Tailoring

Caster and healer Druids can wear cloth. Current Forever crafted-item pools contain a significant number of useful Tailoring pieces for spell-focused Druids.

However, Tailoring is not our default recommendation because Leatherworking supports every Druid playstyle rather than only the caster/healer side.

Druid Recommendation

Best all-round first character: Skinning + Leatherworking.
Restoration / Balance / role switching: Herbalism + Alchemy.
PvP specialist: Engineering is a viable alternative.

Best Profession Pair by Armor Type

Armor / Class TypeBest Leveling PairClasses
Plate progressionMining + BlacksmithingWarrior, Paladin
Leather / Mail progressionSkinning + LeatherworkingHunter, Rogue, Shaman, Druid
ClothTailoring + EnchantingMage, Priest, Warlock

This is the best starting framework, not an endgame law.

Best Professions for Leveling

For a first character, gathering + matching crafting is usually the safest choice:

  • Mining + Blacksmithing: strongest armor/weapon loop for Warrior and Paladin.
  • Skinning + Leatherworking: extremely efficient because Skinning happens during normal combat.
  • Tailoring + Enchanting: excellent caster loop without a dedicated gathering profession.
  • Herbalism + Alchemy: strong for players who prefer consumables to crafted armor.
  • Mining + Engineering: more utility-focused but can require substantial materials.

Skinning deserves special mention for pure leveling efficiency: you do not have to search for nodes. If your leveling route already kills beasts, Skinning converts corpses into money and profession skill with very little additional travel.

Best Professions at Level 60

At level 60, the question changes from “what can craft my next leveling item?” to “what continues providing value every week?”

Alchemy

Strong for repeat consumable demand, raid preparation and players who want a profession whose products are continually consumed.

Engineering

Strong for unique gadgets, explosives and PvP utility that cannot simply be replaced by another player's profession.

Enchanting

Useful whenever equipment upgrades create recurring demand for enchants and disenchanting.

Armor Professions

Blacksmithing, Leatherworking and Tailoring remain valuable through specialized recipes, rare patterns, profession workspaces and class-appropriate crafting, but their value becomes increasingly dependent on the recipes you own rather than simply your profession skill.

Best Professions for PvP

Engineering is the strongest universal PvP candidate.

Its value is not simply raw stats. Engineering can provide additional actions:

  • bombs and grenades;
  • control effects;
  • target dummies;
  • specialized gadgets;
  • mobility and situational devices.

That can matter more in PvP than being able to craft another armor piece.

Mining is the simplest partner because it supplies both ore and stone. A wealthy character or established account can instead fund Engineering from another character and pair it with a second crafting profession.

Best Professions for Gold

There is no permanent “best gold profession” because launch prices change as different parts of the playerbase progress.

Use this framework:

GoalGood ChoicesWhy
Immediate raw materialsMining, Herbalism, SkinningNo recipe needed; materials can be sold directly
Consumable economyAlchemyProducts are consumed repeatedly
Gear upgrade economyEnchantingNew equipment creates recurring enchant demand
Rare-recipe marketBlacksmithing, Leatherworking, TailoringRare patterns can reduce competition
PvP / gadget nicheEngineeringUnique items and components

Two gathering professions are a valid gold strategy, but they have an important Forever trade-off: gathering professions do not provide the 150/225/300 Tradeskill Legacy challenges that the six non-gathering primary crafting professions provide.

Best Professions for Legacy Points

Forever awards one Legacy Point the first time your account reaches 150, 225 and 300 in each non-gathering primary profession:

  • Alchemy;
  • Blacksmithing;
  • Enchanting;
  • Engineering;
  • Leatherworking;
  • Tailoring.

That creates 18 Tradeskill Legacy Points across the account.

Mining, Herbalism and Skinning are still extremely useful, but they do not generate those profession milestone Legacy Points.

For an established account, this creates a good long-term strategy: use early characters to level natural gathering/crafting pairs, then distribute the remaining crafting professions across alts rather than repeatedly choosing the same pair.

How Camping Changes the Best Profession Choice

Every profession contributes something to a campsite. But many camp buffs mirror class buffs and do not stack with their equivalent class ability.

ProfessionTier 1 Camp BenefitEquivalent / Overlap
AlchemyMana regenerationBlessing of Wisdom
BlacksmithingStrengthStrength of Earth Totem
EnchantingStats, armor and resistancesMark of the Wild
EngineeringReagent vendorUnique utility
HerbalismIntellectArcane Intellect
LeatherworkingRested XPUnique utility
MiningMelee Attack PowerBlessing of Might
SkinningCritical StrikeMoonkin Aura / Leader of the Pack
TailoringSpiritDivine Spirit

This creates an important rule: do not choose a profession only for its Camping buff.

For example, a Mage already provides Arcane Intellect, a Druid can overlap several camp effects and Paladins cover multiple Blessings. The profession still has value from crafting, gathering and advanced Camping objects, but the basic buff may be redundant in your normal group.

Best Professions If You Play With Friends

A coordinated group should avoid having every player take the same two professions.

A balanced party can cover:

  • Blacksmithing or Mining for melee support;
  • Herbalism or Alchemy for caster/mana support;
  • Skinning for Crit;
  • Leatherworking for rested XP;
  • Engineering for reagent and repair utility;
  • Enchanting for broad defensive/stat support.

Because each player can contribute only one profession object during the shared cooldown window, profession diversity has actual group value in Forever.

Should You Use Two Gathering Professions?

Mining + Herbalism, Mining + Skinning or Herbalism + Skinning can work well for a dedicated farmer.

Advantages:

  • easy materials to sell;
  • minimal crafting expenses;
  • materials for multiple alts;
  • flexibility during volatile launch prices.

Disadvantages:

  • no self-crafted gear;
  • no crafting profession certification/title progression;
  • no Tradeskill Legacy Points from those gathering professions;
  • Mining + Herbalism requires switching tracking.

For a first main character, we generally prefer one gathering + one crafting profession. Double gathering makes more sense on a farming alt or when gold is your only priority.

Should You Switch Professions at Level 60?

Do not automatically drop your leveling profession the moment you reach 60.

Before switching, check:

  • rare recipes you already learned;
  • Merchant's Favor invested in profession recipes;
  • profession certification and title progress;
  • your ability to source materials from alts;
  • whether the new profession actually changes your PvP or PvE performance;
  • the cost of leveling the replacement from 1 to 300.

A Warrior who owns valuable Blacksmithing recipes may gain more by keeping Blacksmithing than by following a generic “Engineering at 60” recommendation.

A fresh character with no rare recipes has a much lower switching cost.

Secondary Professions: Take All Three

Your two-primary-profession limit does not prevent you from learning the three standard secondary professions.

Cooking

Cooking provides stat food and current Forever Well Fed food can improve experience gained from kills while leveling. It also controls Campfire capacity through upgraded Camping recipes.

First Aid

First Aid now goes beyond bandages. Standard Healing Potions and new curatives are part of its profession progression, which makes it relevant even to classes capable of healing themselves.

Fishing

Fishing supplies Cooking, supports several crafting markets and adds Fish Bowl, Fishing Rack and Fishing Hut to Camping.

Recommendation: learn Cooking, First Aid and Fishing regardless of which two primary professions you choose.

Best Profession Pair by Goal

Which Professions Should You Pick?

If you are creating your first WoW Forever character, there is little reason to overcomplicate the decision:

  • Warrior or Paladin: start Mining + Blacksmithing.
  • Hunter, Rogue, Shaman or Druid: start Skinning + Leatherworking.
  • Mage, Priest or Warlock: start Tailoring + Enchanting.

Then change only when you have a clear reason: competitive PvP, a consumable-focused raid setup, a rare-recipe strategy or an established alt supplying your materials.

The strongest profession is not the one ranked highest in isolation. It is the one whose materials, recipes and utility match what your character actually does.

If you want to compare every profession before deciding, return to the WoW Forever Professions Guide. Individual 1-300 guides are also available for Blacksmithing, Engineering, Leatherworking, Tailoring, Enchanting, Alchemy, Mining, Herbalism and Skinning.
